Mrs. Swink recently celebrated her 90th birthday at a family gathering. Estelle Swink was born in 1910 in Gastonia, the daughter of the late Peter Woods and Kathleen Boyce Garland. In one of her weekly columns she attested to the fact that she could keep up with what activities one of her sons was engaged in while he was in the army. "My son went into the army the same day Elvis Presley did. I read what Elvis is doing and that’s what my son is doing," she said. That column was selected by the Associated Press for national publication.
