He was a native of Robeson County, son of the late Dewey and Rilla Hewett Williams, husband of the late Dorothy McGirt Williams, president, chief executive officer and director of Gaston Federal Savings and Loan Association, which is now Gaston Federal Bank, vice chairman of the bank’s board of directors, graduated in 1950 with a bachelor of science in commerce from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, member of the Pi Kappa Alpha Fraternity, served in the Army during the Korean War, chief examiner of the Savings and Loans, administrator of the Savings and Loans Division of the Department of Commerce for the state of North Carolina, former chairman of the board and president of the Council of Community Financial Institutions in Washington, D.C., member of the board of directors of the Gastonia Downtown Development Corp., the Allocation Committee of the United Way of Gaston County Inc., the mayor’s blue ribbon task force, president of Gastonia’s Central City Association, chairman of a committee of representation of Norfolk-Southern Railway, the N.C.
