She was a native of Powellsville, daughter of the late Joseph Jefferson and Mary Edline Morris Alston, valedictorian of Chowan College Class of 1914, taught piano in Grover and Bethware for several years, assisted her husband at Keeter’s Department Store, Kings Mountain, member of Study Club, Women’s Club, Kings Mountain Country Club, several bridge clubs, senior member of Kings Mountain Baptist Church, charter member of Kings Mountain Garden Club, served as pink lady and receptionist at Kings Mountain Hospital, church choir director and played for worship, weddings, funerals, taught intermediate girls Sunday school, led Girls Auxiliary, Circle Leader, WMU president, instrumental in organizing church library and was the first librarian, served as associate superintendent at WMU .

Department of Human Resources from 1953 to 1976.
