He was a native of Spartanburg, S.C., son of the late Lester and Nell Cavis McDowell, husband of the late Estelle Crouch McDowell, member Episcopal Church of the Redeemer, former member Bethel United Methodist Church in Spartanburg where he was in the Bethelship Sunday School Class, veteran of the U.S. Army Air Corp during World War II.
