He was a native of Laurens County, S.C., employed by the U.S. Postal Service, U.S. Army veteran, attended Johnson C. Smith University, member Macedonia Baptist Church where he was on the deacon board, Sunday School and Hymn choir, volunteer at the University Park Neighborhood Community Police Precinct.

GASTONIA - Capt. Mervin Fritz Cloninger, 81, died Sept. 26, 2000. He was a native of Dallas, son of the late Andrew Albertus and Pearl Pasour Cloninger, served with the Marine Corp’s 5th Division in the Pacific during World War II, served as a legal officer in San Diego after receiving his commission, was adjuntant of the Missile Battalion in 29 Palms, Calif., when he retired, had lived in Gastonia since 1991, member of First United Methodist Church.
