He was a native of Lincoln County, son of the late Joseph and Beulah Michael Shuford, served in Army 286th Combat Engineer Batallion, 7th Army European Theater of Operations, Colmar Campaign in Rhine Valley and Operation Northwind during World War II, rural mail carrier for Lincolnton Post Office, Routes 4 and 1 from 1955 to 1983, member of Asbury United Methodist Church, treasurer, Sunday school teacher, served on Official Board, Scoutmaster, member of National Association of Retired Federal Employees, Veterans of Foreign Wars and American Legion.
