Rosswog, O.S.B., S.T.D., 88, died Sept. 2, 1999, at Belmont Abbey.He was a native of Erie, Pa., son of the late Robert J. and Elizabeth Haiback Rosswog, graduate of St. Mary’s Parochial School and Cathedral Preparatory School, Erie, Pa., began studies at Belmont Abbey College in 1929, entered novitiate of American-Cassinese Congregation of Benedictine Monasteries at St. Vincent Archabbey, Latrobe, Pa., in 1931, professed a monk of Belmont Abbey in 1932, when professed took deceased uncle’s name, Rev. Bernard Hass, O.S.B., prepared for sacred orders at Belmont Abbey Seminary, St. Benedict’s Seminary, Atchison, Kan., and Catholic University of America, Washington, D.C., ordained priest at St. Vincent Archabbey in 1937, continued theological studies at Catholic University of America until 1941, earned S.T.L. and S.T.D. degrees, studied at Pius X School of Liturgical Music, New York City, proctor and assistant dean of men at Catholic University of America, dean of men, rector and vice-president of Belmont Abbey Junior College, headmaster and professor of mathematics and Latin at Belmont Abbey Preparatory School, rector of Belmont Abbey Seminary, taught philosophy at Belmont Abbey College and Sacred Heart College, dogmatic and moral theology and canon law at Belmont Abbey Seminary, canon law to Belmont Abbey’s novices, served as Belmont Abbey College’s academic dean promoting establishment and accreditation of senior college status of Benedictine Catholic Liberal Arts College, active member of its Board of Trustees, vicar general and chancellor of Belmont Abbey Nullius, pastor of St. Mary’s Mission, Shelby, auxiliary U.S. Air Force chaplain at Lake Lure, pastor of Cherryville Mission, associate and pastor of St. Michael Church, Gastonia, served as subprior and prior of Belmont Abbey, prior at St. Benedict’s Priory, Richmond, Va., member of Presbyterial Council and first judicial vicar (officialis) of marriage tribunal in Charlotte Diocese, doctorial dissertation treated of God’s Salvific Will, composed the Book of Customs, a Holy Week Liturgy Booklet and an Oblate Office Book for Belmont Abbey, developed a Study of the New Code for priests, the first set of Faculties for the Charlotte Diocese, a treatise on the Marriage of Conscience and Marriage Solutions, was senior monk at the monastery, celebrated 60th jubilee of monastic profession in 1992, celebrated diamond anniversary of priestly ordination in 1997.
