NEWTON Edwin Dean Powell Sr., 83, died Aug. 29, 1999, at Abernethy Retirement Center. He was son of the late Lillian Dean and Rufus Edwin Powell, husband of the late Lillian Banks Powell, engineer, retired executive from Duke Power Co., longtime member and deacon of First Baptist Church of Mount Holly, life member of Mount Holly Lions Club and American Society of Mechanical Engineering, Trustee for Life of Mars Hill College, before retirement served as chairman of Turbines and Condensers Sub-Committee of Edison Electric Institute Prime Movers Committee, involved in community projects and the higher education of young people, spent 15 years in leadership roles in Boy Scouts of America, served 10 years as Scoutmaster, member of Calvary Baptist Church for the past four years.
