He was a native of Gaston County, son of the late Robert F. and Martha Rhodes Lay, Army veteran of World War II, retired supervisor from Gaston County Dyeing Maching Co. after 39 years of service, lifetime member of Rhyne-Cannon American Legion Post #266, where he served as vice commander, member of the Forty and Eight, Long Creek Memorial Baptist Church, served on the Stanley Volunteer Fire Department from 1950-1978, where he was chief.
