GASTONIA — William Desmond "Des" Phillips, 69, died Sept. 11, 1999, at Gaston Memorial Hospital.He was a native New York City, son of the late Thomas and Emily Phillips, husband of the late Suzanne Bolle Phillips, graduate of Cardinal Hayes High School in Bronx, N.Y., had a bachelor’s degree from Iona College and a master’s and doctorate from Columbia University, most recently was president of Standing Rock College in Fort Yates, N.D., served as vice president of academic affairs at Sacred Heart College, Belmont, for nine years, also held faculty positions at Memphis State University, University of Minnesota, University of Illinois, DePaul University and the New York School for the Deaf, worked for the Bureau of Indian Affairs in Washington, D.C., served in the Army. He helped found Look Up Gaston, was chairman of the Gaston County Planning Board and was a member of Belmont Rotary Club.
