He was a native of Carney’s Point, N.J., son of the late Troy Elden Spencer, graduate of Penns Grove High School, Penns Grove, N.J., and East Carolina University, where he was a member of the varsity golf team, did graduate work at UNC Charlotte, taught social studies and coached football and wrestling at West Charlotte High School, worked in sports wear business and was sales executive with American Corrugated Machinery Inc., Indian Trail, coached with South Park, Pineville, Mint Hill and Matthews recreation associations, was assistant manager and coach with the Carolina Sox, involved in Raintree Country Club Golf Association, where he won 1984 and 1992 golf club championships, two-time North Carolina Amateur Qualifier after placing third in the city amateur golf championship.
