William H. Hobbs
HOBBSVILLE - William Hight Hobbs, 87, a native of Gates County, died November 14, 2001, at Chowan Hospital.
A funeral was conducted Saturday at Hobbsville Baptist Church by the Rev. Steve Loftus. Burial was in the church cemetery. Twiford's Memorial Chapel was in charge.
Hobbs was a carpenter and a member of Hobbsville Baptist Church.
Survivors include a sister, Maebelle Chappell of Hertford; and two brothers, Elliott W. Hobbs of Elizabeth City and A. Paige Hobbs of Hertford.
Thomas E. Perry
EURE - Thomas Eure "Tommy" Perry, 68, a native of Gates County, died November 17, 2001, at Roanoke-Chowan Hospital.
A funeral was conducted Tuesday at Cool Spring Baptist Church by the Rev. Wallace Phillips. Burial was in the church cemetery. Garrett Funeral Home, Ahoskie, was in charge.
Perry had retired as an operations agent from Seaboard Atlantic Railroad and had also retired as an operator from Perry's Suprette. He was a member of Cool Spring Baptist Church and Woodmen of the World.
Survivors include his wife, Elsie Warren Perry; a daughter, Brenda Perry Williams of Eure; two sons, Thomas Eure Perry Jr. of Eure and Herbert Warren Perry Jr. of Rocky Mount; three grandchildren; and three step-great-grandchildren.
Gregory W. Pierce
CHAPEL HILL - Gregory Wade Pierce, 46, a native of Hertford County, died November 19, 2001, in North Carolina Memorial Hospital.
A funeral was conducted Wednesday at Ahoskie Freewill Baptist Church by the Rev. Rodney Hollomon. Burial was in Ahoskie Cemetery. Miller Funeral Home, Gatesville, was in charge.
Pierce was a sales audit manager with Belk Department Stores and was a member of Mount Pisgah Baptist Church, Apex.
Survivors include his mother, Girien Wall Pierce of Eure; and a brother, Timothy Pierce of Ahoskie.
Albert B. Jernigan
SUFFOLK, Va. - Albert Benjamin Jernigan, 74, a native of Gates County, died November 25,2001. He was the widower of Margaret Ethel Jernigan.
A funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Harrell and Hill Funeral Home, 2460 Pruden Blvd., Suffolk, by the Rev. Cameron Currin. Interment will be in Meadowbrook Memorial Gardens.
Jernigan retired as a self-employed general contractor. He was a member of the U.S. Merchant Marine during World War II.
Survivors include daughters, Carolyn J. Whaley and Charlotte M. Holland, both of Suffolk, L. Faye Warren of Edinburgh and Cynthia J. Stephenson of Zuni; a son, Kenneth Jernigan of Portsmouth; sisters, Gurney Wilkins of Suffolk and Beatrice Blackwell of Pueblo, Calif, and Etta Jones of Gates County; a brother, M.R. Jernigan of Suffolk; 10 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and two step-great-grandchildren.
Eldred V. Rountree Sr.
ZEBULON--- Eldred Vincent Rountree Sr., died Dec 3, 2001, at Wake Medical Center.
A funeral was conducted Thursday at Zebulon Baptist Church. Burial was in the Massey family cemetery. Massey Funeral Home, Zebulon, was in charge.

Robert A. Spruill
GATES--- Robert Alvin "Cowboy" Spruill, 63, a native of Beaufort County, died December 4, 2001.
A private funeral was held Thursday. Harrell Funeral Home, Gatesville, was in charge.
Spruill was retired fro Lipton Tea, a member of the First Pentecostal Church and a member of No. 141 Moose Lodge in Suffolk.
Survivors include his wife, Bonnie Patty Spruill; seven daughters, Jessica, Shannon and Tracy Spruill, all of the home, Paulette Atkinson of Arrowhead Beach, Nonie Searcy of Fredericksburg, Va., Pam White of Hertford and Christine Bright of Elizabeth City; six sons, Ryan Patty of the home, Timothy Keown of Tyner, Chris Searcy of Raleigh, Larry Spruill of Louisville, Ky.; four stepchildren, Debbie Keown of Tyner, Susan Melton of Hertford, Roger Keown of Virginia Beach and Robert Keown of Gloucester; two sisters, Ann Barrett of Bellhaven and Gloria Tyndell of New Bern; a brother, Rueben Braddy of Bath; and 19 grandchildren.
Alice R. Eason
SUNBURY---Alice Riddick Eason, 92, a native of Gates County, died December 7, 2001 at Louise Obici Hospital, Suffolk. She was the widow of W.A. "Buster" Eason.
A funeral was conducted Monday at Sandy Cross Baptist Church by the Rev. E. Vernon Gilmer Jr. and Rev. Michael Brinkley.
Burial was in Damascus Church Cemetery, Sunbury. Miller Funeral Home was in charge.. Memorial contributions may be made to either the Gates County Rescue Squad, or Nansemond Suffolk Rescue Squad.
Mrs. Eason was a homemaker, a member of Sandy Cross Baptist Church, its WMU and Senior Adults Sunday School class.
Survivors include three daughters, Beryl Hale and Florence Byrd, both of Suffolk and Nell M. Eason of Sunbury; seven grandchildren; and 10 great grandchildren.
Kenneth Gillespie Sr.
AHOSKIE--- Kenneth Claude Gillespie Sr., 73, a native of Rockingham County, died December 5, 2001, at Pitt County memorial Hospital.
A graveside service will be conducted at Holly Lawn Cemetery, Suffolk, Va., by the Rev. Rodney Holloman with Military honors. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday at Garrett Funeral Home, Ahoskie.
Gillespie was retired from John Deere and had worked the past eight years for Wal-Mart as a greeter. He was a US Navy veteran of WWII.
Survivors include his wife, Gracie Jones Gillespie; two daughters, Donna Milteer of west Palm Beach, Fla., and Cheryl Adams of Windsor; two sons, Kenneth C. Gillespie Jr. of Oklahoma and Howard M. Gillespie of Ahoskie; three sisters, Joann Santie of St. Petersburg, Geraldine Wall of South Carolina and Brenda Jones of Clearwater; a brother, Tony Gillespie of Reidsville; 10 grandchildren; three step grandchildren; and six great grandchildren.
Jesse L. Harrell
EDENTON - Jesse L. Harrell, 84, a native of Chowan County, died December 13, 2001, in his home.
A funeral was conducted Sunday in Edenton Baptist Church by Dr. Paul Pridgen and Dr. Kenneth Word.
Burial was in Beaver Hill Cemetery. Miller Funeral Home, Edenton, was in charge.

Harrell founded Edenton Furniture Co. in 1946 and retired from the business in 1979.

Survivors include his wife, Lena Smith Harrell; a daughter, Linda H. Hobbs of Gatesville; two sons, Phil W. Harrell of Seven Lakes and Ronnie Harrell of Raleigh; a sister, Eleanor H. Partin of Edenton; and nine grandchildren.
