Allie B. Lefler
MEMPHIS, TN - Allie Beard Lefler, 77, died Dec. 13, 2002 at Baptist Memorial Hospital Restorative Care in Memphis.
Lefler was the widow of Burton Douglas Lefler.
A funeral service was held Dec. 17, 2002 in St. Michaels's Catholic Church, where she was a communicant and member of the Ave Maria Guild and past member of the St. Michaels's school Mother's Club.
Survivors include her daughters, Cheryl Williams of Memphis, Rosemary Hughes of laurel, Miss. and Patti Ramsey of Bartlett, TN; a son, Michael Douglas Lefler of Gates; a sister, Margaret Cheney of Ashland; eight grandchildren; and three great - grandchildren.
Memorials may be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, Memphis, TN or the Susan B. Coleman Foundation.
Winfield C. Hinton
HOBBSVILLE - Winfield Carter Hinton, 88 a native of Gates County, died Dec. 18, 2002, in Louise Obici Memorial Hospital, Suffolk.
Mrs. Hinto was the daughter of the late Lonnie C. and Naomi Pittman Carter. She was a retired postal clerk with the Gatesville Post Office, a member of Hobbsville Baptist Church where she was active in the W.M.U., served as a Sunday School teacher for 40 years, and was a member of the church choir.
A funeral was held Dec. 20, 2002 in Hobbsviklle Baptist Church with the Dr. Stephen E. Loftis, pastor officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the memorial fund of Hobbsville Baptist Church, Hobbsville, NC 27946.
Survivors include a husband, L. Pell Hinton; two sons, Lennie P. Hinton Jr. of Hobbsville and Lonnie Carter Hinton of Suffolk and three grandchildren.
Clarice Barrington
SUNBURY - Clarice Barrington, 79 died Dec. 16, 2002, in Martlon, NJ.
She was the widow of Robert Lee Barrington, formerly of Coinjock, NC and a former member of St. John AME Zion Church, Sunbury.
A funeral was held Dec. 20, 2002 at St. John AME Zion Church, Sunbury with the Rev. Littlejohn officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery.
Survivors include two daughters, Deborah Barrington - Davis of Marlton, NJ and Bobbie Barrington of New York City; and six grandchildren.
Nellie P. Myers
SUFFOLK, Va. - Nellie Parker Earley Myers, 83, a native of Gates County, died Dec. 16, 2002 at Methodist Medical Center in Oakridge, Tenn.
Mrs. Myers was a former member of First Baptist Church in Suffolk. She was an ardent gardener and an avid golfer who thoroughly enjoyed the golf tournaments. She was a member of the Central Baptist Church in Oakridge.
A funeral was held Dec 20, 2002 in R. W. Baker and Company Funeral Home with Dr. David H. Chauncey officiating.
Survivors include two daughters, Catherine Ann Earlely Platteborze of Oscoda, Mich. And Patricia Earley Jones of Oakridge; a brother, Marshall H. Parker of Suffolk, seven grandchildren, great grandchildren
Sarah G. Eure
SUFFOLK, Va. - Sarah "Willie" Goodman Eure, 84, a native of Gates County, died Dec. 14, 2002.
Mrs. Eure was the daughter of the late Charlie and Carrie Goodman. She was educated in the Nansemond County Public School System. Eure was a member of Union Branch Baptist Church after matrimony to the late Grover Tomas Eure Sr., she became a member of Zion Tabernacle Baptist Church.
A funeral was held Dec. 19, 2002 in Zion Tabernacle Baptist Church with eh Rev. William S. Norman officiating.
Survivors include four daughters, the Rev. Ella Eure - Eaton of New York; Sarah L. Morris of Philadelphia, Pa; Helen E. Morris of Suffolk and Denise E. Young of Pleasantville, NJ; three sons, Grover T. Eure of Portsmouth, Dr. Herman E. Eure of Advance, NE and Marquis A Eure of Cornelius, NC; a sister, Idonia G. Parker; 21 grandchildren; 19 great grandchildren; 12 great great - grandchildren.
L. Hunter Eure
EURE - Lankford Hunter Eure, 85, a native of Gates, died Jan. 21, 2002, at Down East Health and Rehab, Gatesville. He was the widower of Ruby Joyner Eure.
A funeral was conducted at 2 p.m. January 24, 2002 at Cool Spring Baptist Church by the Rev. Tommy Hayes and the Rev. Forrest Guthrie. Masonic rites were accorded by Gatesville Lodge. Burial was in the church cemetery.
Eure retired from the Naval Air Station in Norfolk, Va., as an aircraft mechanic and a member of Cool Spring Baptist Church and its Adult Sunday School Class and Gatesville Masonic Lodge #126. He was also a member of Hall Ruritan Club, and the Gatesville Senior Citizens. He had served in the U.S. Air Force during World War II.
Survivors include two daughters, Mary Linda Eure Carter of Sunbury and Elaine Eure Driggins of Eure; three sisters, Mecie Byrum of Corapeake, Lillian Taylor and Linda "Sugar" Eure, both of Eure; and a granddaughter.
Mollie M. Hadwin
PENSACOLA. Fla. - Mollie Riddick Hadwin, a native of Hertford, died Jan. 20, 2002, at her home. She was the widow of Travis Ray Hadwin Sr.
A service was conducted Jan. 23, 2002 at Redeemer Lutheran Church by the Rev. Robert Rupp. Burial was in Barrancas National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donation may be made to the Lutheran School and Library Fund and the L.W.M.L. Oak Lawn Funeral Home, Pensacola, Fla., was in charge.
Mrs. Hadwin was a charter member of Redeemer Lutheran Church and School. After her retirement as church and school secretary for Redeemer Lutheran Church, she worked with the Council on Aging and the Foster Grandparents Program.
Survivors include a son, Travis Ray Hadwin of Pensacola; four daughters, Barbara Svigilin and Pat Risha Macbeth, both of Pensacola, Sue Trew of Claremont and Joan Guerin of Birmingham, Ala.; four sisters, Betty Baines of Gatesville, Priscilla Jones and Hannah Riddick, both of Suffolk, and Janice R. Fogarty of Knoxville, Tenn. 13 grandchildren; and 12 great - grandchildren.
Margaret T. Booth
GATESVILLE - Margaret T. Boothe, 79, a native of Gates County, died Jan. 20, 2002, in Down East Health and Rehabilitation Center.
A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Jan. 24, 2002 at Zion Tabernacle Baptist Church, Corapeake. Burial was in the church cemetery.
She was a retired seamstress and a member of Zion Tabernacle Baptist Church, Corapeake.
Survivors include three daughters, Barbara Morris of Suffolk, Va., Mary Albernathy of
St. Albans, NY, and Brenda Knight of Dover, Del.; 13 grandchildren; and 22 great grandchildren.
Ruby R. Hobbs
CHESAPEAKE, Va. - Ruby Rice Hobbs, a native of Sunbury, died Jan. 21, 2002. She was the widow of Noel M. Hobbs.
A funeral was conducted at 2 p.m. Jan. 24, 2002 at South Norfolk Baptist Church by the Rev. Frank Hughs and Dr. A. Wayne Cook. Burial was in Riverside Memorial Park. Memorial donations may be made to South Norfolk Baptist Church Renovation Fund or Comfort Care Hospice, 667 Kingsborough Square No. 202, Chesapeake, VA 23320.
Mrs. Hobbs was a retired homemaker/seamstress. She was a member of South Norfolk Baptist Church.
Survivors include three daughters, Anita Matteson of Virginia Beach, Dorothy Hackworth and Christine Ussery, both of Chesapeake; a Sister, Edna R. Hoffler of Sunbury; a brother, Frank L. Rice of Sunbury; eight grandchildren; and eight great - grandchildren.
