Roy W. Snead
TUSCALOOSA. AL - Roy W. Snead, 84, died March 10, 2002 at DCH Regional Medical Center in Tuscaloosa, AL.
Snead lived the majority of his adult life in the Hampton Roads area and was employed at Newport News Shipbuilding for 42 years. He was a member of North Carolina Riverside Baptist Church in Newport News.
A chapel service was held March 16, 2002 at Peninsula Funeral Home. Burial was in the Peninsula Memorial Parks
Survivors include one son, Jody H. Snead of Tuscaloosa, AL; two granddaughters and one great grandson.
Virgie J. Carter
SUFFOLK, Va - Virgie Jones Carter, 100, a native of Gates County, died March 12, 2002 in Hillsborough, NC.
Mrs. Carter was the daughter of the late Tommie and Laura F. Jones. A homemaker, she was the oldest member of Southside Baptist Church, Suffolk.
A funeral was held at 2 p.m. March 15, 2002 in Southside Baptist Church by the Rev. Stewart McCarter. Burial was in the Liberty Spring Christian Church Cemetery. Survivors include two daughters, Faye Perry of Suffolk and Carolyn Felton of Chapel Hill; five grandchildren; 10 great grandchildren and one great great grandchild.
Sally D. Savage
GATES - Sally Draper Savage, a native of Gates County, died March 12, 2002 in the home of her son in Gates.
Mrs. Savage was the daughter of the late Ernest and Virginia Collins Draper. She had retired from Leggett's Dept. Store in Suffolk, was a member of Reynoldson Baptist Church and the Gatesville Senior Citizens Club.
A funeral was held at 2 p.m., March 14, 2002 in Reynoldson Baptist Church by the Rev. Billy Presley and the Rev. Elmer Collins. Burial was in the church cemetery. Contributions may be made to the Reynoldson Church Building Fund, Gates NC 27937 or to the University Hospice, Ahoskie, NC 27910.
Survivors include two daughters, Jeanne S. Edler of Kaneohe, Hawaii and Betty Jo S. Umphlett of Gates; a son, Robert L. "Bobby" Savage Jr. of Gates; five grandchildren, six great - grandchildren; and seven great - grandchildren.
Edward A. Clark
CORAPEAKE - Edward Aaron Clark, 91, a native of Hyde County, died March 12, 2002 in his home.
Clark was the son of the late Samuel S. and Ethel Balance Clark. A retired farmer and carpenter, he was a founding member of Calvary Baptist Church in Suffolk.
A funeral was conducted at 11 a.m., March 15, 2002 in the chapel of Miller Funeral Home, Gatesville by Pastor Skip Rustay. Burial was in Eureka Baptist Church Cemetery. Memorial donations may be made to Calvary Baptist Church, 545 Turlington Road, Suffolk, Va. 23434.
Survivors include his wife, Jean West Clark; three sons, Roderick Clark, Samuel C. Clark and David Clark, all of Corapeake; three grandchildren and one great grandchild.
Carl H. Jones
GATESVILLE - Carl Hayes Jones, 70, a native of Gates County, died March 17, 2002 in Winslow Memorial Home, Elizabeth City.
Mr. Jones was the son of the late Riddick and Lillian Hayes Jones. He had retired from Carolina Aluminum in Winton.
Funeral services were held March 19, 2202 in the chapel of Miller Funeral Home with the Rev. Ron Cava and Wayne C. Gardner officiating. Burial was in Middle Swamp Baptist Church Cemetery.
Survivors include four sisters, Lillian "Kitty" Greene of Eure, Mary Ann Parker of Chesapeake, Helen Raynor of Wake Forest and Rosa Mae Byrum of Edenton; several nieces and nephews.
John H. Wiggins
GATES - John Herman Wiggins Sr. 92, a native of Gates County, died March 21, 2002 in Southampton Memorial Hospital.
Wiggins attended Reynoldson Baptist Church and was a retired farmer. Wiggins was the son of the late John "Button" Sullivan and Daisy Stallings Wiggins.
A funeral was conducted March 23, 2002 at Reynoldson Baptist Church with the Rev, Billy Presley officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery.
Survivors include his wife, Alcora Winslow Wiggins; one daughter, Mary Edlar Buck of Gates; two sons, John H. Wiggins Jr. and Keith A. Wiggins, both of Gates; brothers, Marvin Wiggins of Hobbsville and Winfred Wiggins of Chesapeake, Va.; five grand - children and six great - grandchildren.
Francis M. Blanchard
VIRGINIA BEACH - Francis M. Blanchard, 79, a native of Belvidere, died March 21, 2002 at Sentara Village Nursing Home.
Blanchard served as a pilot in the Naval Air Corps in WW II. He retired from Lucent Technologies in 1985 after 43 years of service. He was a carver of waterfowl.
A private graveside service will be held at a later date.
Survivors include his wife, Jean Henry Blanchard, a son, Fred M. Blanchard; two daughters, Pamela B. Weatherford and Lori B. Dabul; three granddaughters and three grandsons.
John L. Bass
SUNBURY - John Linwood Bass, 84, died March 17, 2002.
A celebration of life service was conducted March 20, 2002 at Sandy Cross Baptist Church.
Alease R. Howell
SUFFOLK, Va. - Alease Russell Howell, 87, a native of Gates County, died March 18, 2002, at Nansemond Pointe Healthcare. She was the widow of William Carroll Howell.
A funeral was conducted March 22, 2002 at Sidney F. Harrell Chapel of Harrell and Hill Funeral Home by the Rev. Byron McCreary. Interment will be in Holly Lawn Cemetery.
Mrs. Howell was a member of Trinity Christian Church and former president of Trinity Ladies Auxiliary. She was a homemaker.
Survivors include a daughter, Nancy Howell Peace of Suffolk; a son. Donald H. Howell of Bohannon: five grandchildren: and six great - grandchildren.
Katherine W. Casper
GATES - Katherine Winslow Casper, 76, a native of Gates County, died March 2, 2002 in Down East Health and Rehab. She was the daughter of the late Josiah and Martha Erma Winslow and the widow of Cecil C. Casper Sr.
Casper was a member of Up River Friends Church in Belvidere.
A graveside service was conducted at 11 a.m. Monday in the Casper Family Cemetery by the Rev. Billy Presley.
Survivors include one son, Cecil Casper Jr. of Gates; two sisters, Iona Wilder of Belvidere and Clarine Casper of Gates and one brother, Charles Winslow of Hertford.
