R. R. Brinkley Sr.
SUFFOLK, Va., - R. Ryland Brinkley Sr., 77 a native of Nansemond County, Va., died
Feb. 26, 2002 at Louise Obici Memorial Hospital.
Brinkley was the son of the late Carlton W. Brinkley & Maybelle Horton Brinkley.
A funeral was conducted at 2 p.m., March 1, 2002 at Eureka Baptist Church in Corapeake with the Rev. Cameron Currin official. Burial was in the church cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the Eureka Baptist Church Building Fund or Memorial Fund, P.O. Bo 68, Corapeake, NC 27926 or to a charity of ones choice.
Brinkley had retired as a rural letter carrier from the U.S. Postal Service. He was also co - owner of the Knight & Brinkley Store at Cypress Chapel, Va. for 25 years.
He was a lifelong member of Eureka Baptist Church and was church treasurer for 50 years. He was a deacon, member of the Men's Bible class, Baptist Men, the Young at Heart Seniors Club and the Bethlehem Fellowship Club.
He was a charter member of Cypress Chapel Ruritan Club. He was a past president and had 42 years perfect attendance.
Survivors include his wife, Rachel Byrd; four sons, Robert R. Brinkley of Suffolk, Va., C.P. Brinkley of Buena Vista, Va., Fred Brinkley of Suffolk, Va., and E. Roger Brinkley of Suffolk, Va.; one brother, Thomas Brinkley of Suffolk, Va., and six grandchildren.
Gene R. Bundy
SUFFOLK, Va. - Gene Roy Bundy, 50, a native of Gates County, died Feb. 27, 2002 at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital.
Bundy was the son of the late George F. Bundy and Allie Vann Bundy.
A graveside service was conducted at 11a.m., March 1,2002 at Holly Lawn Cemetery with the Rev. David Jendrey officiating. Contributions may be made to Western Branch Baptist Church Building Fund, 6952 Old Myrtle Road, Suffolk, Va. 23434.
Bundy was a retired auto mechanic for Glenn Martin and was a member of the Myrtle Hunt Club. He was a former member of the Peanut City Bass Masters and the Suffolk Cosmopolitan Club.
Survivors include his wife, Linda Hedgepeth Bundy of Suffolk Va.; two sisters, Mary Carter of Suffolk Va. and Barbara Rountree of Corapeake; his adopted parents, Bobby and Joyce Keen of Suffolk, Va.
Daisy B. Boone
GATES - Daisy Blanche Boone, 81, died Feb. 27, 2002.
A service was conducted March 3, 2002 at Stoney Branch Baptist Church.
Etta M. Bailey
SUNBURY - Etta Mae Bailey, 65, of Cooper Loop Road, died March 29, 2002.
A funeral was held April 10, 2002 at St. John AME Zion Church.
Rufus Bembry
GATES - Rufus Bembry, 91, of Gates Bank Road, died March 28, 2002.
A funeral was held April 4, 2002 in First Baptist Church, Gates.
William T. Shean
FORSYTH - William Thomas "Billy" Shean, a native of Perquimans County, died March 14, 2002.
A funeral was held March 17, 2002 at Maynard Baptist Church with Dr. Marvin Lee officiating. Burial was in East Juliette Baptist Church Cemetery, Juliette, GA.
Shean was the son of the late Thomas Howard Shean. He was a veteran of the United States Army serving in Vietnam and was a plantation manager.
Survivors include his wife, Nancy Buchanan Shean; four sons, Bill Shean and Nick Shean, both of Plymouth and Gabe McClure and Matt McClure, both of Oakwood; three daughters, Amy Shean, of Plymouth; Alicia Shean of Forsyth and Crystal McClure of Oakwood, his mother, Clarine Whedbee Stallings of Sunbury; one sister, Brenda S. Stallings of McDonnough; his grandmother, Minnie Whedbee of Hertford; and one grandson.
Nelson B. Cox
EURE - Nelson Bruton Cox, 87, a native of Richmond County, NC, died March 28, 2002 in Louise Obici Memorial Hospital, Suffolk.
Cox was the son of the late William A. and Fannie Bruton Cox. He retired from the Public Works Division of Little Creek Amphibious Base, and was a member of Gatesville Baptist Church, where he formerly taught Sunday School for more than 30 years. Cox had served in the U.S. Army Signal Corps during World War II.
A funeral was held March 30, 2002 in Gatesville Baptist Church by the Rev. Gene Asbil. Burial was in the Gatesville Cemetery.
Survivors include his wife, Ora Lee Lowdermilk Cox; two daughters, Billie C. Harrell of Gatesville and Mary C. Pirece, also of Gatesville; a son, Terry G. Cox of Murfreesboro; a sister, Frances Grose of Chesapeake; seven grandchildren and four great - grandchildren.
Stanley E. Hughes Sr.
PORTSMOUTH, VA - Stanley Eugene Hughes Sr., 79, a native of Portsmouth, died April 7, 2002 in a Portsmouth hospital.
Hughes was a retired pipefitter of Norfolk Naval Shipyard. He was a World War II and a Pearl Harbor survivor. He was a member of Portsmouth DAV Chapter 22 and VFW.
A graveside service was held April 10, 2002 in Olive Branch Cemetery with military honors.
Survivors include his wife, Alma G. Hughes; four daughters, Linda Fulmer of Virginia Beach, Sandra Duncan of Moyock. April Hughes of Windsor, Va. and Bambi Bennett of Gates County: one son, Stanley E. Hughes Jr. of Williamsburg, a brother, Arthur A. Hughes of Portsmouth; eight grandchildren.
Bertha S. Costen
SUNBURY - Bertha Sue Costen, 86, of 231 Highway 32 died April 7, 2002.
A funeral was held April 11, 2002 at St. John AME Zion Church.
Elizabeth I. Braford
SUFFOLK, VA - Elizabeth Irene Braford, 45, a native of Suffolk, died April 9, 2002 at her residence
Braford worked for seven years as a teacher's aide at Mount Zion Elementary School. Braford loved playing hand bells with the Hand Bell Choir at St. Paul's Episcopal Church and singing in the Chancel Choir.
Braford was the daughter of Rose Fravel Cook and the late Otis Aldine Fravel.
A funeral was held April 12, 2002 in St. Paul's Episcopal Church by the Rev. Vance Mann. Interment was in Holly Lawn Cemetery. Memorial donations may be made to St. Paul's Episcopal Church's Hand Bell Choir or the American Cancer Society
Survivors include her husband, Paul H. Braford of Suffolk;two sons, Christopher Hunter Biaford and Jarrett Paul Braford: mother and stepfather, Rosa Fravel Cook and Roger Cook of Corapeake; a sister, Rosafee Gardner of Suffolk; best friend and adopted sisters, Kathy Runyon and Cindy Moegenberg of Suffolk: five brothers, Charles Fravel of Eure, Donald Fravel of Harrisonburg, Paul Fravel of Mannington, WVa., Robert Fravel of Cumberland, Md., Ronald Fravel of Alma, Ark; two stepbrothers, Roger M. Cook of Colonial Heights, Bobby Cook of Windsor; and one ,stepsister, Delores Cook of Petersburg.
Flora R. Carter
SUNBURY - Flora Rountree Carter, 88, a native of Gates County, died April 10, 2002 in Down East Health and Rehab Center in Gatesville.
Mrs. Carter was the daughter of the late Sornie Ralph Sr. and Aurelia Stallings Rountree. Receiving her certification from UNC - CH, she had retired in 1981 after 20 years as a public health nurse serving the Perquimans County Health Dept., the Hertford - Gates Health Dept. and the Elizabeth City District Health Dept. Prior to that, she had worked as a nurse at Roanoke - Chowan Hospital in Ahoskie. She was a member of Damascus Christian Church and was also a member of the NC Public Health Association and the NC State Retirees Organization.
A funeral was conducted April 13, 2002 in Damascus Christian Church by the Rev. Forrest Guthrie. Entombment followed in the church cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Damascus Christian Church, Sunbury 27979 or Gates County Rescue Squad, Gatesville, NC 27938.

Gates and Alice C. Moore of Sunbury; two sons, Johnny Carter of Sunbury and Dr. Wilbur B. "Bill" Carter Jr. of Chapel Hill; three sisters, Carmen Hilton of Suffolk, Virginia Snipes of Portsmouth and Helen Taylor of Virginia Beach; two brothers, Robert Rountree of Laurel, Md.: Herbert D. Rountree of Gatesville; and six grandchildren.
