CORAPEAKE - Miles C. Welch of Adams Swamp Road, died April 9, 2002 in Louise Obici Memorial Hospital, Suffolk.
Welch was the son of the late Christopher and Elizabeth Jordan Welch and the widower of Georgia Welch. He was a truck driver and retired from Perry Lumber Co.
A memorial service was held April 13, 2002 in Crocker Funeral Home, Suffolk.
Survivors include a daughter, Margaret Witherspoon of Corapeake; a son, Otis Welch of Franklinton, NC; two grandchildren and two great - grandchildren.
Gary L. Van Horn Sr.
CHESAPEAKE, Va - Gary Lee Van Horn Sr., 47, of the 2000 block of Wingfield Ave., died April 13, 2002 at his residence.
He was the son of the late Manvin L. Van Horn.
A graveside service will be held at 11a.m. April 17, 2002 in Riverside Memorial Park, Norfolk, with the Rev. William G. Beagle officiating.
Survivors include his mother, Mildred C. Van Horn; a son, Gary Lee Van Horn Jr., a daughter, Michele L. Mclnnerney, all of Chesapeake; two sisters, Debbie Lewis of Chesapeake and Brenda Dial of Sunbury; and two grandchildren.
Dorothy J. Williams
EURE - Dorothy Jean Williams, 68, died April 6, 2002, at RCH in Ahoskie
A graveside service was conducted April 14, 2002 at Bethel Cemetery.
Williams worked at Edgecombe General Hospital, Tarboro and at the hospital in Chico, Calif., for a number of years.
Survivors include a number of nieces and nephews.
Bertha S. Costen
SUNBURY - Bertha Sue Costen, 86, a native of Gates County, died April 7, 2002, at Winslow Memorial Home.
A funeral was conducted April 11, 2002 at St. John AME Zion Church by pastor Willie A. Littlejohn. Entombment was in St. Johns Drake Memorial Cemetery.
Survivors include her husband, Everett Russell Costen: a daughter, Felicia A. Baker of Bridgeport, Conn.; one sister, Catherine Hoffler of Sunbury; two grandchildren; and one great - grandchild.
James H Bunch
SUFFOLK - James "Jimmy" Clarence Bunch 64, a native of Nansemond County, died April 16, 2002 in his residence.
Bunch worked for 12 years at Newport News Shipyard then later moved to the Norfolk Naval Shipyard where he worked for the SUP - SHIP Dept. of the Department of Defense. He was a life member of Cypress Chapel Christian Church. He served on the deacon board and was a member of the Mens Bible Class. He also sang in the choir and was in charge of the Wednesday Outreach Ministry. Bunch was a member of Cypress Chapel Ruritan Club, having 30 years perfect attendance. He also enjoyed beekeeping and was a member of the U.S. Air Force. He was the son of the late Clarence Earl Bunch and a veteran of the U.S. Air Force.
A funeral was held April 19, 2002 at Cypress Chapel Christian Church by the Revs. John Kimball, Michael Brinkley and Willis Dowling. Burial was in the church cemetery. Contributions may be made to the Cypress Chapel Christian Church Family Life Center Building Fund, 1891 Cypress Chapel Road, Suffolk, Va. 23434.
The widower of Susan Story Bunch, he is survived by his mother, Louise Parker Bunch of Suffolk; two daughters, Karen B. Miles of Gloucester, Va. and Pamela H. Parker of Franklin; two sons, James Edward Bunch of Council Bluff, Iowa and James Earl Bunch of Isom, Ky; his friend, Margie Welch of Suffolk; two sisters, Eloise B. Byrd of Sunbury and Edna Earle Carter of Suffolk; a twin brother, Richard Earl Bunch of Driver, Va.; two other brothers, Dan P. Bunch of Boulder City, Nov., and Fred Alien Bunch of Nashville, and eight grandchildren.
Michael W. Bunch
SUNBURY - Michael Wayne Bunch, 41, a native of Hertford County, died April 14, 2002 in Winchester, Va.
Bunch was employed in sheet metal construction.
A memorial service was held April 23, 2002 in the chapel of Miller Funeral Home, Gatesville. Interment will be private and will be held at a later date. The family asks that flower be omitted and contributions be made to the Gates County Rescue Squad, Gatesville, NC 27938.
Survivors include his parents, Louis N. Bunch Jr. and Deanna Parker Bunch of Sunbury; two daughters. Amber Nicole Rank of Portsmouth and Toni Michelle Dail of Sunbury; and two brothers, Ronald B. Bunch of Portsmouth and Brian Keith Bunch of Chesapeake.
Marie C. Wynne
SUFFOLK, Va. - Marie Calhoun Wynne, 68, of the 3800 block of Deer Path Road, died April 19, 2002 in Obici Hospital.
Wynne had resided in Suffolk for the past 46 years. Wynne was the daughter of the late Carol and Marie Calhoun.
She retired as an office administrator for Combat Systems in the Naval Shipyard Portsmouth after 15 years and had been an auxiliary member of the Nansemond - Suffolk Rescue Squad. She was an avid gardener and enjoyed springtime in her garden.
A graveside service was held April 22, 2002 in Meadowbrook Memorial Gardens.
Survivors include her husband, Thomas Lee Wynne; three daughters, Jeannette Lee Wynne of Chattanooga, Tenn.; Kelly Wynne Queen of Hobbsville and Nancy Annette Livington of Suffolk; a sister, Anne Jordan of Crewe, Va. and one brother, Wayne Calhoun of Petersburg; and one grandson.

GATESVILLE - James "Jimmy" Riddick Williams Sr., 56, a native of Portsmouth, Va., died March 23, 2002 in Albemarle Hospital.
Williams was a member of Cool Springs Baptist Church. He was a Army and National Guard veteran and was the son Clint Williams of Eure and the late Wanna Perry Williams Adams.
A funeral was conductedMarch 27, 2002 at Cool Springs Baptist Church with the Rev. Vern Gilmer officiating.
Survivors include his wife, Trudy Williams of Gatesville; two sons, Jimmy Sales of Richmond, Va. and Jamie Williams of Elizabeth City; two step - children, Trudy Harris of Gates and David Lane of Suffolk; one sister, Molly Coley of Eure and seven grandchildren.
Lillian G. Spivey
HOBBSVILLE - Lillian Goodwin Spivey, 82, a native of Chowan County, died March 25, 2002 in the Skills Nursing Facility of Chowan Hospital, Edenton.
Mrs. Spivey was the daughter of the late James W. and Catherine "Katie" Asbell Goodwin. A nurse, she worked at Chowan Hospital and Britthaven Nursing Home, both in Edenton, and was a member of Warwick Baptist Church. She was the wife of the late W.T. "Tommie" Spivey Sr.
A funeral was held March 28, 2002 in Warwick Baptist Church by Dr. Charles Jones. Burial was in the church cemetery.
Survivors include a daughter, Gloria S. Twine of Hobbsville; two sons, W. Thomas Spivey Jr. of Hobbsville and James Herbert Spivey of Elizabeth City; a stepdaughter, Hazel S. Bass of Hobbsville; three sisters, Eva G. Modlin of Sunbury, Syble G. Abrams of Norfolk and Doris Jean Jackson of Virginia Beach; two brothers, Dr. Frederick L. Goodwin of Oregon and Floyd Goodwin of Suffolk; seven grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren.
Sylvia H. Myers
WINFALL - Sylvia Arlene Harrell Myers, 51, of 1021 Crittenden St., NE, Washington, DC died April 16, 2002, at her home.
Myers was the daughter of the late Henry William Harrell and Artleathia Collins Harrell. Her husband, Francis D. Myers Sr. preceded her in death.
A funeral service was conducted April 24, 2002 at First Gospel Tabernacle Apostolic Church in Winfall. Burial was in the Harrell's Family Cemetery.
