Philip P. Godwin Sr.
GATESVILLE - Philip Pittman Godwin Sr., 77, a native of Gates County, died December 12, 2001, in Sentara Norfolk General Hospital.
He was the widower of Anita Freeman Godwin.
A funeral was conducted Saturday in Gatesville Baptist Church by the Rev. Gene Asbill and the Rev. Billy Presley.
Miller Funeral Home, Gatesville was in charge of arrangements.
Burial was in the Godwin family plot. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association or to Gatesville Baptist Church.
Godwin was an attorney in the Godwin & Godwin Law Firm. He was a member of Gatesville Baptist Church, he had served as a trustee of Chowan College, a trustee of Wake Forest University and a member of Gatesville Masonic Lodge No. 126.
He was an Air Force veteran of World War II and had served in the Pacific Theatre.
Survivors include a son, Philip Pittman Godwin Jr. of Gatesville; three brothers, Walter Hayes Godwin Sr. and Francis Marne Godwin, both of Gatesville and Edward Redden Godwin Sr. of Houston, Texas; and two grandchildren.
Lucy R. Rogerson
GATES COUNTY - Mrs. Lucy Russell Rogerson, age 77, formerly of Elizabeth City, NC, died Friday, December 14, 2001, at 558 Spivey Road, Hobbsville, NC.
Mrs. Rogerson was born in Gates, NC, the daughter of the late William Arthur and Maggie Sue Riddick Russell and was the wife of the late Lloyd E. Rogerson. She was a secretary at the Elizabeth City Hosiery Mill for 30 ½ years and a member of Ramoth Gilead Baptist Church.
Mrs. Rogerson is survived by one sister, Mary Ellen Temple of Elizabeth City, NC, one brother, Nathan Canton Russell of Elizabeth City, NC; four nieces, Tebia McKown, Letituc Witcher, Crystal Branham and Bonnie Hobbs; five nephews, C.A. Bogue, James Bogue, Warren Russell, David Russell, and Johnny Harrell; and several great nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by a sister, Violet E. Bogue and a brother, William "Billy" Russell.
Graveside services was conducted Sunday, December 16, 2001, at 2 p.m. in Memory Gardens Cemetery by the Rev. Tony Moore and the Rev. Duane Campbell. The family received friends Saturday, December 15, 2001 from 7 to 8:30 p.m. in Twiford's Memorial Chapel, Church St. Memorial donations may be made to the Family Life Center of Ramoth Gilead Baptist Church or to Faith Assembly of God. The family was at the residence of Mr. and Mrs. Kenny Hobbs, 558 Spivey Road, Hobbsville, N.C.
Twiford's Memorial Chapel, 405 E. Church St., Elizabeth City, NC, was in charge of arrangements.
T.L. Bundy
CORAPEAKE--- Thurman Lee Bundy Jr., 58, a native of Gates County, died December 18, 2001, in his home.
A funeral was conducted Thursday at Parker's United Methodist Church by the Re. Terry Williams. Burial was in the church cemetery. Miller Funeral Home, Gatesville, is in charge.
Bundy was retired from the maintenance department of Newport News Shipyard.
Survivors include his wife, Annette Gibbs Bundy of Hertford; a daughter, Shelly Bundy of Hertford; and five grandchildren.
Glenn Woolard
ERUE--- Thomas Glenn Woolard, 68, a native of Washington, died December 18, 2001, in Louise Obici Hospital, Suffolk, Va.
A memorial service was Thursday in Trinity Christian Church by Daniel Davenport. The family asks that flowers be omitted and contributions be made to the American Cancer Society or to the Gates County Rescue Squad.
Woolard was a retired electrician from Service Electric's, he had served in the US Army and attended Trinity Christian Church, Winton.
Survivors include his wife, Gaye Morgan Woolard; daughters, Jeanna Rose of Gatesville and Molly Woolard of Toledo, Ohio; sons, John Giles of Wilmington, Doug Woolard of Beaufort and Shane Haga of Cape Canaveral, Fla.; sisters, May Lyon and Louise Harlow, both of Norfolk; 14 grandchildren; and eight great grandchildren.
Stanley H. Taylor
NEW CITY, NY-Stanley Harrell Taylor, a native of Gates County, died suddenly Nov. 6, 2001 in Nyack Hospital. He was the son of the late Edgar D. and Essie Lassiter Taylor.
A religious service was held Nov. 9, 2001 at the Thiells United Methodist Church in Thiells, NY. Interment was in Brick Church Cemetery, New Hampstead, NY.
After serving in the US Navy from 1942 to 1945, Taylor moved to the Bronx and married Antoinete Perdichizzi. Mrs. Taylor predeceased him.
Taylor retired from Civetta Contracting in 1972. He was a classic car enthusiast and enjoyed local car shows.
Survivors include two sons, Stanley H. Taylor and Robert J. Taylor of Suffern; one daughter, Antoinette Varrin of Tennessee; two brothers, Robert John Taylor of Hertford and Lloyd Taylor of Porstmouth, Va; two sisters, Nellie Lee Lassiter and Margaret Johnston of Sunbury; five grandchildren and one great grandchild.
Dennis C. Butler
SUFFOLK, Va--- Dennis Cross Butler, 73, died November 30, 2001.
A funeral was conducted Tuesday at New Piney Wood Baptist Church, Gates. Crocker Funeral Home was in Charge.
Josephus Chavis
AHOSKIE--- Josephus "J.C." Chavis, a native of Ahoskie, died November 30, 2001 at Roanoke-Chowan Hospital, Ahoskie.
A funeral was conducted Monday at Stoney Branch Baptist Church, Gate, by the Rev. Michael Holloman. Burial was in the family cemetery. Gates County Community Funeral Home was in charge.
Chavis retired in 1980 after 30 years of service.
Survivors include three daughters, Susan Santiago Smith of Amelia, Va., Rita Chavis Boone of Gates and Riggi Chavis of Jersey City, N.J.; three sons, Joseph Chavis Jr. of Virginia Beach, Va., William C. Chavis of Old Bridge, N.J., and Richard Jaycee Chavis of Audubon; six sisters, Clarice Williams and Shirley L. Brown, both of Portsmouth, Sarah Cotton of Ahoskie, Mary Bowser, Juanita Artis, Cyrinthia Hanford, all of Chesapeake; four brothers, Larry Chavis of New York, Lonnie Felton and the Rev. Alton Chavis, both of Portsmouth and Robert Felton of Chesapeake; 11 grandchildren; and a great grandchild.
Mary F. Wilson
SUNBURY--- Mary Carolyn Fletcher Wilson, 59, a native of Portsmouth, Va., died November 30, 2001, in her home.
The family will have a private memorial service at a later date. The family will be at Mrs. Wilson's residence. Harrell Funeral Home, Gatesville, is in charge.
Mrs. Wilson was the manager of Radio Shack in Franklin.
Survivors include tow daughters, Julina Cooper of Bryson City and Carol A. Howard of Hawthorne, Calif.; a son, Michael K. Wilson of Sunbury; two brothers, Robert E. Fletcher and Silas Fletcher Jr., both of Winton; six grandchildren; and a great grandchild.
Nancy Moore
AHOSKIE--- Nancy "Sis Futrell" Moore, a native of Hertford County, died November 30, 2001 at her residence.
A funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Zion Grove Missionary Baptist Church, Aulander, by the Rev. Elbert Lee. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Hunter's Funeral Home, Inc., Ahoskie, is in charge.
Mrs. Moore was a member of Zion Grove Missionary Baptist Church.
Survivors include her husband, Robert Moore of Manhattan, N.Y.; two sons, Christopher Moore and James Moore, both of Ahoskie; two daughters, Elsie Moore of Lewiston and Myra Moore of Ahoskie; her father, Charlie Futrell of Ahoskie; seven brothers, Thomas E. Futrell, James R. Futrell, Calvin Futrell, James A. Futrell, Roosevelt Robinson and William T. Futrell all of Ahoskie and James C. Futrell of Aulander; and seven sisters, Thelma Futrell, Geraldine F. Sessoms, and Better Futrell, all of Ahoskie, Elizabeth Liverman of Potecasi, Malinda Futrell of Manhattan, Mary Rose Crawford and Patricia Porter, both of Gates.
