Herman W. Greene
SUNBURY - Herman Wayne Greene, 90, a native of Gates County, died May 13, 2002 in Albemarle Hospital.
Greene was a member of Oak Grove Baptist Church. He was retired from Union Camp. He was the son of the late Isaac and Martha Pierce Greene and the husband of the late Margaret Whitley Greene.
A graveside service was held May 16, 2002 at Oak Grove Church Cemetery by the Rev. Wayne Gardner.
Survivors include three daughters, Annabelle Jernigan of Suffolk, Va., Patricia G. Connolly of Windsor. Va. and Margaret Babb of Moyock: four sons. Clyde Greene of Franklin, Va. Herman W. Greene Jr. of Gatesville, Larry Greene of Sunbury and Jerry Greene of Elizabeth City: 13 grandchildren and four great - grandchildren.
J.B. Parker
GATES - James Beaurie "J.B." Parker, 76, a native of Gates County, died May 16, 2002, in Roanoke - Chowan Hospital.
Parker was the son of the late Timothy Beaurie and Lillie Waff Smith Parker. He had retired from Union Camp Corp. in Franklin after 33 years of employment, was a member and deacon of Reynoldson Baptist Church, and had served in the Merchant Marines.
A funeral was held May 18, 2002 in Reynoldson Baptist Church by the Rev. Billy Presley. Burial was in the church cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that contributions in his memory be made to the building fund of Reynoldson Baptist Church, Gates, NC 27937 or to the Gates County Rescue Squad, Gatesville, NC 27938.
Survivors include his wife, Blanche Gray Parker; three daughters, Sandra Parker of Gates, Connie Parker Jeffreys of Zebulon and Mary Susan Parker of Wausau, Wis.; a son, William Beaurie Parker of Boonville, Mo.; three sisters, Lillian Riddick Truman of Toronto, Canada, Ellen Turner of Norfolk and Ethel Newsome of Franklin; and three grandchildren.
Wilbur M. Smith
AHOSKIE - Wilbur Morris "Skinny" Smith, 83, a native of Gates County, died May 16, 2002 in his home.
Smith was a member of First Baptist Church of Ahoskie. He was retired owner/operator of Ahoskie Radiator and Glass Inc. He was a member of the Ahoskie Kiwanis Club, served as director of Civil Defense for Hertford County and was an Army Air Corps veteran of World War II.
A funeral was held May 18, 2002 in Garrett Funeral Home, Ahoskie by the Rev Dr. Jesse J. Croom and the Rev. Robert May. Burial was in the Highland Memorial Gardens. Memorial donations may be made to First Baptist Church of Ahoskie or to Parkinson Disease Research.
Survivors include two sons, Eddie Smith of Winton, Steven Smith of Kill Devil Hills; two sisters, Jean Hinton of Hobbsville, Verlie Franks of Greenville; two grandchildren and a great - grandchild.
Barnard D. Patterson
EDENTON - Barnard D. Patterson, M.D., 88, a native of Queens, NY, died May 19, 2002, in Chowan County.
Dr. Patterson was the son of the late George William and Frances Costuma Patterson. A retired general practitioner, he had served as a Major in the U.S. Army during World War II.
A funeral was held May 21, 2002 in the chapel of Miller Funeral Home, Edenton by the Rev. Ralph Epps. Dr. Patterson will be sent to the A.L. Jacobsen Funeral Home, 1380 New York Ave., Huntington Station, NY, and they will direct graveside services in the Pinelawn Memorial Park.
The family asks that flowers be omitted and contributions in his memory be directed to the Edenton United Methodist Church. 225 Virginia Road, Edenton. NC
Survivors include his wife, Mary Elizabeth Enyeart Patterson; two daughters, Susan Jane Halligan of Huntington, NY and Betsy Brown of Winton; a brother, George C. Patterson of Chappell Hill, Texas; three grandchildren and a great - grandson.
Anne L. Harrell
SUFFOLK, Va. - Anne Lee Harrell, 80, a native of Nansemond County, Va., died May 20, 2002 at Nansemond Pointe Healthcare.
Harrell was the daughter of the late Ernest Lassiter and Ladonia Lassiter and the widow of Richard Harrell.
She retired as a nurse from Lakeside Nursing Home. She was a member of First Baptist Church, Main Street., Dorcas Sunday School Class, Susan Stokeld Missionary Circle, Women's Missionary Union and she taught the Adult and Youth Sunday School classes.
A graveside service was held May 23, 2002 with the Rev. David Chauncey officiating. Interment was in Cedar Hill Cemetery.
Survivors include two daughters, Mary Ann Greene of Gates and Nancy S. Carter of Suffolk, Va; a son, Marvin R. Simpson of Conyers, Ga.; three sisters, Thelma Mays of Wilmington, Gladys Almond and Pauline Queen, both of Washington, NC; a brother, Randy Lassiter of Hampton, Va.; seven grandchildren.

CORAPEAKE - Grace Denise Hedgepeth. 37, died May 24, 2002 at Duke Univeristy Hospital in Durham.
A funeral was held May 28, 2002 at Great Fork Baptist Church in Suffolk, Va. with the Rev. Jonathan Judy officiating. Burial was in the Windsor Cemetery.
Survivors include her husband, George and children, Michelle, Annie and Christopher.
Myrtle G. Fowler
SUFFOLK, Va - Myrtle Griggs Fowler, 75, a native of Gates County, died May 25, 2002.
Fowler was the daughter of the late Ocie and Carrie Whitehurst Griggs. She retired as a tea pack operator from the Lipton Tea Company. She was a former member of Holy Neck United Church of Christ.
A funeral was held May 28, 2002 in R.W. Baker & Co. Funeral Home by the Rev. Gary

SUFFOLK, VA - Ethel Harrell Walters, 82, a native of Gates County, died April 30, 2002.
Walters was the daughter of the late Joseph Campbell Harrell and Mary Emma Brothers Harrell and the widow of William Seba Walters Sr.
Mrs. Walters was retired from Obici Hospital was an admitting clerk. She was member of Great Fork Baptist Church.
A funeral was conducted May 2, 2002 at the graveside at Whaleyville United Methodist Church Cemetery by the Rev. Jonathan Judy. Memorial donations may be made to the Nansemond Suffolk Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 1515, Suffolk, Va. 23439.
