Allston B. Askew
WINTON - Allston Bryant Askew, 71, a native of Hertford County, died May 31, 2002 in Brian Center Nursing Facility, Windsor.
Askew was the son of the late William Bryant and Bettie Eure Askew. He had retired from Union Camp Corp., now International Paper, as a super - visor in the Woodlands Division after 41 years of employment. A member and deacon of Winton Baptist Church, he also was a member of Winton Masonic Lodge No. 723 and was an honorary member of the Murfreesboro and Ahoskie Masonic Lodges and had served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War.
A graveside service was held June 3, 2002 in the Winton Baptist Church Cemetery by Dr. Charles Harris.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that contributions in his memory be directed to the American Cancer Society.
Survivors include his wife, Margie Terry Askew, a daughter, Barbara A. Whaley of Virginia Beach; a son, Kenneth Bryant Askew of Raleigh; a sister, Betty A. Chappell of Gatesville and two grandsons.
Robert L. Greene
SUNBURY - Robert L. Greene, 66, died July 4, 2002 at Obici Hospital.
Greene was the son of the late Vera Jordan and Tom Andrew Greene. Greene was the owner and operator of Greene's Motor Sales, a member of Liberty Spring Christian Church and a member of the Loyal Order of Moose Lodge #141.
A funeral was held July 7, 2002 in Liberty Spring Christian Church by the Rev. Sallye Hardy, Rev. Roger Johnson and Rev. Dolan Tilbert. Burial was in Meadowbrook Memorial Gardens. Memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society, 604 Constance Woods Dr., Suffolk, VA 23434.
Survivors include his wife, Jeanine Greene; two daughters, Cheryl G. Eason of Sunbury and Sheila G. Hairsine of Suffolk; two sons, Robert Louis Greene Jr. of Suffolk and Todd Andrew Greene, also of Suffolk; three sisters, Gladys Dotson of Chesapeake, Va.; Joyce Modlin and Lois Jordan, both of Sunbury; three brothers, Dan Greene of Sunbury, Jack Greene and Norman Greene, both of Suffolk; and four grandchildren.
Woodrow W. Polson
SUFFOLK, VA. - Woodrow Polson of Suffolk, Va., died June 23, 2002 at Maryview Hospital in Portsmouth, Va.
Polson was the son of the late Fannie and Joseph Polson and was the husband of the late Eula Polson.
He was a member of First Baptist Church in Suffolk and was an active member and deacon. He served as chairman of the Board of Deacons and was a member of W.H. Hurst Bible Class and served on the Board of Directors of the First Baptist Hoffler Home for Adults.
A funeral was held June 28, 2002 at First Baptist Church, in Suffolk. Burial was in Carver Memorial Cemetery.
Survivors include three daughters, Joyce P. Majette of Suffolk Mavis P Liew and Dianne P. Oliver of Columbia. MD., and one son. McRay W. Polson of Baltimore, MD.
Walter Baker
CHESAPEAKE, VA - Walter Baker, 69, a native of Portsmouth. Va. died July 2,
2002 in Maryview Medical Center, Portsmouth.
Baker was the son of the late Mary and Ashley Baker. He was the founder and owner of M&W Drywall and Plastering Company.
He was a member of Zion Tabernacle Baptist Church of Corapeake, where he served with his wife, Marion J. Baker.
A funeral was held July 6, 2002 at Zion Tabernacle Baptist Church in Corapeake by the Rev. William Norman. Burial was in the church cemetery.
Survivors include two sons, Walter Baker Jr. of Norfolk and Linwood Morris of Newport News; four daughters, Beverly Jackson of Alexandria, Va., Diane Bumpers of Chesapeake, Karen Weathers of Virginia Beach and Lesa Scott of Chesapeake; two brothers, Ashley Baker and Robert Baker of Portsmouth; 14 grandchildren; eight great - grandchildren.

GATES - Alice J. Freeman, 78, of Crosstown Road, died June 29, 2002.
A funeral was held July 5, 2002 in New Piney Wood Chapel Baptist Church.
Bernice R. Kraus
CORAPEAKE - Bernice Rood Kraus, 87, a native of Luzerne County, Pa., died June 30, 2002 tin Louise Obici Memorial Hospital, Suffolk.
Kraus was the daughter of the late Loren N. and Elizabeth Birth Rood. She was a retired registered nurse, attended Eureka Baptist Church and was a member of the Ida K. Brinkley Sunday School Class and the Young at Heart Senior Citizens Group.
A funeral was held July 3, 2002 at Eureka Baptist Church in Corapeake by the Rev. Cameron Currin. Burial was in the church cemetery
Survivors include two daughters, Glenda K. Hobbs of Corapeake and Katherine K. Hickok of Sertaozinho. Brazil; a son, Neil L. Kraus of Chesapeake, a brother. Loren Kenneth Rood of Union. Ky.; 11 grandchildren and 15 great - grandchildren.
Christine S. Oakley
CHESAPEAKE, VA - Christine S. Oakley, 85, a native of Greenville, died July 3, 2002 at a local hospital.
Mrs. Oakley was an insurance agent with Modern Woodmen of America and a member of Deep Creek Baptist Church.
A graveside service was held July 8, 2002 in Woodlawn Memorial Gardens with the Rev. Frank Leonard officiating.
Survivors include two sons, Hafey C."Pete" Jollie of Essex Junction, Vt., and Manuel F. Jollie of Chesapeake; two half sisters, Mary I. Johnson and Marie Morgan, both of Corapeake; two half - brothers, Kerren Stocks of Corapeake and Donald Stocks of Virginia Beach; three grandchildren and six great - grandchildren.
Leroy L. Jordan
GATES - Leroy L. Jordan, 68, a native of Gates County, died July 10, 2002 in Hampton VA Hospital, Hampton, Va.
Jordan was the husband of Margie Jordan and a member of Blanchard's Grove Baptist Church.
A funeral was held July 14, 2002 at Blanchard's Grove Baptist Church with the Rev. Lycurgus Harrell officiating. Burial was in the Twine Family Cemetery.
Survivors include his wife, Margie Jordan; three sons, Ernest L. Jordan of Hobbsville, Calvin A. Jordan of Fayetteville and Bruce W. Jordan of Annapolis, Md; one daughter, Darlene Jordan - Nowell of Hobbsville; two brothers, Whayln Jordan of Gatesville and Leroy Jordan of Chowan.
Thomas E. Bagley Sr.
HOBBSVILLE - Thomas Elliott Bagley Sr., a native of Gates County, died July 11. 2002 in Albemarle Hospital, Elizabeth City.
Bagley was the son of the late Rallache E. Sr. and Eunice Hofler Bagley. A retired foreman with American Sheet Metal in Norfolk, he was a member of Sandy Cross Baptist Church and was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II
A funeral was held July 14, 2002 in Sandy Cross Baptist Church by the Rev. E. Vernon Gilmer Jr. Burial was in the Warwick Baptist Church Cemetery.
Survivors include two sons, Thomas Elliott Bagley Jr. of Jupiter, FL; and Barry Lawrence Bagley of Hobbsville; two sisters, Cora B. Buell of Elizabeth City and Thyreese B. Blake of Norfolk; a brother, George "Buck" Bagley of Williamston; an ex - wife, Frances Lawrence of Colerain.
Robert E. Lee Holland Jr.
SUFFOLK, VA - Robert Edward Lee "Bob" Holland Jr., 59, died July 14, 2002.
Holland was the son of the late Wilma Nelms and Robert Edward Lee Holland, who resided in Suffolk.
Holland retired after 41 years of service as manger of Planter's Shipping and Receiving Department and was a member of Oxford United Methodist Church.
A funeral was conducted July 16. 2002 in Damascus Christian Church in Sunbury by the Rev. Forrest Guthrie. Burial was in the church cemetery.
