GATESVILLE - Juan Lee Davis, 20, died July 31, 2002 in Gates.
Davis was a painter and a member of Victory In the Name of Jesus Church. Davis was the son of the late Barbara Ward - Davis.
A funeral was conducted Aug. 4, 2002 at the Gates County Community Center with the Rev. J.D. Mickens officiating.
Survivors include his father, Rodger Davis; two brothers, Justin J. Davis and Shannon L.
Davis and his grandparents, McKeel and Elsie Ward, both of Gatesville.
L. Carlton Johnson
EURE - Lewis Carlton Johnson, 62, a native of Gates County, died Aug. 12, 2002 in Chesapeake General Hospital.
Johnson was the son of the late Lewis P. and Marie Harrell Johnson. He had retired as a pipefitter from Norfolk Naval Shipyard, was a member of Eure Christian Church, and had served in the National Guard. He was presently employed in the security department of Lewis Lumber Co.
A graveside service was held Aug. 15, 2002 in Eure Christian Church Cemetery by the Rev. Wayne Gardner.
Survivors include his wife, Katie Smith Johnson; a son, Scott Johnson: three sisters, Myrna Lowe of Gatesville, Rachel Evans of Medina, Ohio, and Joyce Umphlette of Ahoskie; his step - mother, Garnette Johnson of Eure; two grandsons.
Rayfield Vaughan Sr.
GATES - Rayfield Vaughan Sr., 58, died Aug. 20, 2002.
A funeral was held Aug. 15, 2002 in New Calvary Baptist Church, Suffolk.
Margie B. Norman
SUNBURY - Margie Bond Norman, 63, a native of Gates County, died Aug. 19, 2002 at her residence
Norman was a retired bus driver for the Gates County Public Schools.
A funeral was conducted Aug. 23, 2002 at Lebanon Grove Baptist Church in Gatesville with the Rev. Lycurgus Harrell officiating. Burial was in the Gatling Family Cemetery in Sunbury.
Survivors include two sons, Michael Norman of Sunbury and Reginald Norman of Raleigh; a daughter, Phyllis Norman of Butner, NC: two brothers, Uyless Bond of Philadelphia, PA and Coolidge Bond of Gatesville; two sisters, Rachel Hathaway of Gatesville and Thelma Blackley of Brooklyn, NY; and four grandchildren.
R. Coleman Morgan
PORTSMOUTH, VA - R. Coleman "Peanut" Morgan, 74, a native of Gates County, died Aug. 20, 2002 at the home of his daughter in Suffolk.
Morgan was a retired tile and marble contractor after 50 years in the profession. He was retired from the federal government with 10 years of service at NNSY. He was a member of Lake Drummond Masonic Lodge for 48 years and formerly an active member of the American Cancer Society's Lost Chord Club.
A funeral was conducted Aug. 23, 2002 in Snellings FuneralHome, Churchland Chapel, with the Rev. Richard Martin, the Rev. Deb Jenkins and Dr. Lewis Morgan officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the charity of one's choice.
Survivors include his wife, Virginia Lee Morgan; his daughter, Jan Monroe of Suffolk; two brothers, James E. Morgan of Chesapeake and Dr. Lewis H. Morgan of Richmond; two sisters, Oneal Rowe of Portsmouth and Sue Arnold of Tennessee; and three grandchildren.
Addle G. Wiggins
PORTSMOUTH, VA - Addie Geneva Wiggins, 85, a native of Gates County, died Aug. 18, 2002 in her residence.
Wiggins was the widow of James M. Wiggins and a member of St. John A.M.E. Zion church in Sunbury. She was also a member, usher and deaconess of Celestial Baptist Church in Portsmouth
A funeral was conducted Aug. 23, 2002 at St John A.M.E. Zion Church with the Rev. Ernest Chambliss, eulogistic services, and minister of the church, the Rev. Willie Littlejohn. Burial was in the church cemetery.
Survivors include two daughters, Julia Hughey of Richmond and Waldensia Wiggins of Portsmouth, and a sister, Clarice Barrington of New Jersey.
Grady C. Williford
RODUCO - Grady Cleveland Williford, 69, a native of Bertie County, died July 28, 2002 in his home.
Williford was the son of the late Garland Williford. He had retired from Newport News
Shipbuilding and Drydock, and was member and deacon of Eure Christian Church. He had served in the Navy during the Korean War.
A funeral was held Aug. 1, 2002 in Eure Christian Church by the Rev. Wayne Gardner.
Burial was in the church cemetery. Memorials may be made to Eure Christian Church, NC 137, Eure, NC 27935.
Survivors include his wife, Beulah Peede Williford; his mother, Ruth H. Williams of Gates; three sons, David Lee Peede of Roduco, Curtis Ray Williford of Clayton, NC and Cleveland Grady Williford of Hagerstown, Md; two sisters, Linda Wiggins of Gatesville and Phyllis Liverman of Aulander; two brothers, Finley Williford of Newport News and David Alien Williford of Portsmouth; and three grandchildren.

AHOSKIE - Chester Riddick, 63, of the 200 block of Burden St., died July 27, 2002.
A funeral was held July 31,2002 in New Piney Grove Baptist Church, Gatesville.
Jeanette R. Downey
CORAPEAKE - Jeanette Rountree Downey, 76, a native of Bertie County, died July 30, 2002 in Sentara Nursing Center, Barco, NC.
Downey was the daughter of the late Sallie Bracy and Lonnie Norfleet Rountree. She was a Baptist.

Amos L. Green Sr.
PORTSMOUTH - Amos L. Green Sr., a native of Gates County, died Aug. 28, 2002 in Maryview Medical Center.
Green was a member of First Corinthian Baptist Church, Portsmouth.
A funeral was conducted Aug. 31, 2002 in Corprew Funeral Home, Portsmouth by the Rev. Linwood Boone. Burial was in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens, Chesapeake.
Survivors include his wife, Marjorie M. Green; three sons, two sisters, and a brother.

GATES - Frances Eley, 52, a native of Gates County, died Sept. 4, 2002 at her residence.
A funeral was held at Joppa Missionary Baptist Church with Rev. Jerry Boone presiding. Burial was in the Johnson Family Cemetery.
Survivors include her husband, Phillip Eley; five daughters, Frances Eley - Williams of Fayetteville, LaToya Eley of Gates, Tanya Burke of Belvidere, Katina Kee and Delma Johnson, both of Hobbsville; her mother, Olivia Johnson of Gates; three brothers, Charlie Johnson, Preston Johnson and Joe McKoy Eure all of Gates; one sister, Peggy Johnson of Ahoskie; and seven grandchildren.
