Hazel B. J. Mitchell
BALTIMORE, Md. - Hazel Bessie Johnson Mitchell, 84, a native of Gates County, died Sept 5, 2002 in Glen Burnie, Md.
Mitchell was the daughter of the late E. Aubrey and Margaret Lee White Johnson and the widow of Joe Mitchell.
A graveside was held Sept. 10, 2002 in Holly Lawn Cemetery by the Rev. Robert J. Parks Jr.
Survivors include one son, Joe Mitchell Jr. of Laytonsville, Md. and three grandchildren.
Amos L. Green Sr.
PORTSMOUTH, Va. - Amos L. Green Sr., 85, a native of Gates County, died Aug. 28, 2002 in Maryview Medical Center.
Green was a member of First Corinthian Baptist Church, Portsmouth.
A funeral was conducted Aug. 31, 2002 in Corprew Funeral Home, Portsmouth by the Rev. Linwood Boone. Burial was in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens, Chesapeake.
Survivors include his wife, Marjorie M. Green; three sons, two sisters, and a brother.
Frances Eley
GATES - Frances Eley, 52, a native of Gates County, died Sept. 4, 2002 at her residence.
A funeral was held Sept. 8, 2002 at Joppa Missionary Baptist Church with the Rev. Jerry Boone presiding. Burial was in the Johnson Family Cemetery.
Survivors include her husband, Phillip Eley; five daughters, Frances Eley - Williams of Fayetteville, LaToya Eley of Gates, Tanya Burke of Belvidere. Katina Kee and Delma Johnson, both of Hobbsville; her mother, Olivia Johnson of Gates; three brothers, Charlie Johnson, Preston Johnson and Joe McKoy Eure, all of Gates; one sister, Peggy Johnson of Ahoskie; and seven grandchildren.
Shirley 0. Lane
VIRGINIA BEACH Va. - Shirley 0. Lane, 57, a native of Roanoke, Va., died Sept. 8 2002 at a Norfolk hospital.
Lane was retired from Defense Investigative Services. She was of the Baptist faith.
A graveside service was conduced Sept. 12, 2002 in Forest Lawn Cemetery with Pastor Edgar Kent officiating.
Survivors include her husband, Linwood S Lane Jr.; a son, Linwood S. Lane III of Gates County; three sisters, Mildred Pleasant of Chesapeake, Lucy Bowen of Newport News and Joani Taye of Norfolk; two brothers, Bobby Hyler of Suffolk and Thomas Hyler of Chesapeake; one grandson of Merigate, FL.
Edward V. Willey
GATES - Edward Vernon Willey, 78, a native of Gates County, died Sept. 13, 2002 in Louise Obici Memorial Hospital.
Willey was the son of the late Dan Arthur Sr. and Rosa Whedbee Willey. A retired farmer and mail carrier, he was a member of Kittrell's United Methodist Church.
A funeral was held Sept. 16, 2002 in the chapel of Miller Funeral Home, Gatesville by the Rev. Bill Altman. Burial was held in the Gatesville Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that contributions be made to one's favorite charity.
Survivors include his wife, Evelyn Boone Willey, a daughter, Nancy Willey Piper of Raleigh; a sister, Ada W. Carroll of Gates; five brothers, Whedbee Willey of Gates, D.A. Willey Jr. of Nashville, John Willey of Corapeake, Harry Willey of Hobbsville and Tom Willey of Gaston; and one granddaughter.
Charles E. Ellis
COURTLAND, Va. - Charles Eugene Ellis, 71, a native of Gates County, died Sept. 12, 2002 in Southampton Memorial Hospital in Franklin, Va.
Ellis was the son of the late Thurman E. and Mildred Carter Ellis. He had retired from Hercules Inc., was a member of the Gatesville United Methodist Church and the National Rifle Association and had served in the U.C. Coast Guard.
A funeral was held Sept. 16, 2002 in Gatesville Methodist Church by the Rev. William Clements, pastor. Burial will be in the Ellis Family Cemetery. Memorial donations may be made to Gatesville United Methodist Church, c/o Mildred Baines, 203 W. Maple St., Gatesville, NC 27938.
Survivors include his wife, Terrie Hearp Ellis; three daughters Or Kimberly Ellis of Port St. Lucie, FL, Melinda Zonts of Virginia Beach and Whitney Nicholson of Durham; two sons, Carter Ellis of Havelock and Bryan Ellis of Virginia Beach; an unofficially adopted son, Donnie Sawyer of Suffolk and six grandchildren.
Vilma E. Smith
NORFOLK, Va. - Vilma Etheline Smith, 87, of the 4800 Block of Robin Hood Road, died Sept. 17,2002.
Smith was the founder and pastor of Bethel Praise and Worship Center in Norfolk. She was the widow of Charlie A. Smith.
A funeral was held Sept. 20, 2002 in Bethel Praise and Worship Center by the Rev. Eleazer A. Tillett Sr. Burial was in the Woodlawn Memorial Gardens. Memorial donations may be made to Bethel Praise and Worship Center Building Fund.
Survivors include two brothers, Loren E. Tillett Jr. and Eleazer A. Tillett Sr.; and five sisters, Corrine Sawyer, Anna Mae Hickman. Esmeralda Watson, Lioma Johnston, all of Norfolk and Merle Hale of Eure.
Roger M. Sayward
GATES - Roger Melvin Sayward, 76, a native of Portland, Maine, died September 20, 2002, at Louise Obici Memorial Hospital, Suffolk, Va. He was the widower of Ruth May Sayward.
A memorial service will be conducted Saturday, September 28, 2002, in New York. Burial will be in New York. Garrett Funeral Home, Ahoskie, is in charge.
Sayward was a retired buffer with Leather Tanning.
Survivors include four daughters, Ruth M. Harvey of Gates, Rhoda M. Smith of Delevan, N.Y, Ronna M. Wickham of Brocton and Rhua M. Dixon of Pompano Beach, Fla.; one sister, Wanita Warren of Maine; one brother, Wendall Sayward of Maine; eight grandchildren; and five great - grandchildren.
Mozelle H. Rountree
HOBBSVILLE - Mozelle Hofler Rountree, 95, a native of Gates County, died September 21, 2002, in Albemarle Hospital, Elizabeth City. She was the widow of Ned Rountree.
A funeral was conducted Wednesday at Hobbsville Baptist Church by Dr. Stephen E. Loftis and the Rev. Terry Jones. Burial followed at the Rountree family cemetery.
Mrs. Rountree was a member of Hobbsville Baptist Church, she had worked in the Gates County School System and with the U.S. Postal Service. She was also a member of Hobbsville Home Demonstration Club.
Survivors include a daughter, Nancy R. Eure of Hampton, Va.; a sister, Margaret H. Spivey of Augusta, Ga.; three grandchildren; and five great - grandchildren.
Mildred S. Smith
VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. - Mildred Stallings Smith, 87, a native of Gates County, died September 21, 2002 at a Virginia Beach nursing facility. She was the widow of Carlton Elhue Smith.
A graveside service was conducted Tuesday at the King family Cemetery, Gates County, with pastor Tom Potter. Twiford's Colonial Chapel, Chesapeake, was in charge
Mrs. Smith was a member of Sandy Cross Baptist Church.
Survivors include two sons, Carl Smith of Virginia Beach and Clinton Smith of Chesapeake; seven grandchildren; four great - grandchildren; and a great - great - grandchild.
