Charlie L. Boone Sr.
PORTSMOUTH, Va. - Charlie L. "Buck" Boone Sr., 69, a native of Gates County, died October 6, 2002, at SunBridge Care & Rehabilitation for Chesapeake, Chesapeake.
A funeral was conducted Friday at Celestial Baptist Church by the Rev. Leon J. Boone. Burial was in Roosevelt Memorial Park, with military honors. Corprew Funeral Home was in charge.
Boone retired from the City of Portsmouth's public works department after 20 years of service. He was a member and usher of Celestial Baptist Church and a U.S. Air Force veteran.
Survivors include his wife, Freda M. Boone; three daughters, Pamela Walden of Chesapeake, Pastor Venita Walden and Kim S. Eley, all of Portsmouth; two sons, Charlie
L. Boone Jr. of Suffolk and Jeffrey Boone of Portsmouth; his father, Nelson Boone of San Francisco, Calif.; three sisters, Ernestine Watts, Marlyn Hardy and Theresa Mack, all of San Francisco; four grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
Charles W. Casper
AHOSKIE - Charles White Casper, 59, a native of Gates County, died October 10, 2002, at his home.
A funeral was conducted Sunday at Garrett Funeral Home, Ahoskie, by the Rev. Lester Jarrett and the Rev. Raleigh Johnson. Burial was in Cool Spring Baptist Church Cemetery. Memorial donations may be made to Ahoskie Church of God Building Fund.
Casper was retired from the Virginia Dept. of Transportation and was an Air Force veteran. He attended Ahoskie Church of God.
Survivors include his wife, Linda Johnson Casper; two daughters, Lori Casper Belangia of Winton and Lisa Casper Milburn of Suffolk, Va.; a son, Charles Norman Casper of Winton; two sisters, Mary Elizabeth Kiger and Vivian Young, both of Suffolk; two brothers, Maurice Casper and Cleveland Casper, both of Suffolk; and two grandchildren.
Elizabeth B. White
SUNBURY - Elizabeth Bunch White, 91, a native of Chowan County, died October 11, 2002, in Chowan Hospital, Edenton. She was the widow of William Gurney White.
A funeral was conducted Sunday at Warwick Baptist Church. Miller Funeral Home, Gatesville, was in charge.
Mrs. White was a homemaker and a member of Warwick Baptist Church.
Survivors include a son, Warren Leo White of Sunbury; a brother, Ivan Bunch of Hobbsville; six grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren.
Florida C. Bond
SUNBURY - Florida Otelia Costen Bond, 83, a native of Gates County, died October 11, 2002, at Sentara Hampton General Hospital.
A funeral will be conducted at noon Thursday at St. John A.M.E Zion Church by the Rev. Willie A. Littlejohn. Burial will be in the St. John's Drake Memorial Cemetery. Hertford County Undertakers, Winton, is in charge.
Survivors include her children, Celestine Bond of Irvington, N.J., Lance Bond and Edna Dancy, both of Hampton, Va., Janie Smith, Willie Earl Bond, Costen Bond, Richard Bond and George Bond, all of Sunbury, Katie Austin and Maggie Vanderveer of East Orange, Lillie Hailey of Turnersville, John Bond and William Bond, both of Medford, David Bond and Thomas Bond, both of Hobbsville; sisters, Jessie Branch of Brooklyn and Mary Eason of Portsmouth; 35 grandchildren; and 19 great-grandchildren.
Olia L. Brothers
WATERBURY, CT - Olia Lee (Rascoe) Brothers, 72, a native of Gates County, died Sept. 20, 2002 at Abbott Terrace Health Center.
Brothers was the widow of Lycurgus (Kirt) Brothers and the daughter of the late Emmanuel and Julia (Norfleet) Rascoe.
She has been a resident of Waterbury since 1954 and worked at Phillips Technologies (Airpax) in Cheshire for several years as an assembler, retiring in 1993. She was a member of Zion Baptist Church for 47 years, where she was a member of the Senior Missionary. She was also a member of the American Legion Post No. 135 Auxiliary.
A funeral was held Sept. 25, 2002 at Zion Baptist Church. Burial was in New Piney Grove Cemetery.
Survivors Include a son, Leonard Ray Brothers of Windsor; a-daughter, Evelyn M. Brothers Blanchard of Waterbury; two sisters, Carrie Rodgers of Waterbury and Bertha Saunders of Syracuse, NY; five grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
Rosa B. Harrell
CORAPEAKE - Rosa Bell Harrell, 85, a native of Gates County, died Sept. 21, 2002 at her residence.
A funeral was held Sept. 26, 2002 at St. Paul Baptist Church. Burial was in the church cemetery.
Survivors include two daughters, Helen J. Gatling of Corapeake and Evelyn Hunter of Winston-Salem; one son, George Savage of New Haven, Conn; two sisters, Gladys Jones and Leola Langley, both of New York, NY; and two brothers, Chester Bames of New York, NY and Johnnie Barnes of New Haven, Conn.
Margaret L Howell
EURE - Margaret Landing Howell, 81, a native of Gates County, died Sept. 24, 2002 in Albemarle Hospital, Elizabeth City.
Mrs. Howell was the daughter of the late Joseph and Mollie Manseau Landing. A homemaker, Howell was a member of Eure Baptist Church, the Gatesville Senior Citizens Group and the Woodmen of the World.
A funeral was conducted Sept. 26, 2002 at Eure Baptist Church by the Rev. Wayne Gardner and the Rev. Carroll Johnson. Burial was in the Howell Family Cemetery.
Survivors include two daughters, Dianne Cherry and Cindy Lassiter, both of Eure; a sister, Thelma L. Eure of Salisbury, Md.; four grandchildren, three great-grandchildren.
Norma A. Brown
ELIZABETH CITY - Norma Aston Brown, 73, a former resident of Hobbsville, died Sept. 26,2002 at Albemarle Hospital.
Mrs. Brown was a native of Holland, Va. and was the daughter of the late Lee Andrew Aston and Nannie Gercia Aston. She was the widow of Robert L. Brown.
Brown retired from Albemarle Hospital as an RN in 1995 having had a nursing career that spanned a period of 48 years. She was a member of Zion UMC and an active participant of City Road UMC.
A graveside service was held Sept. 29, 2002 at Old Hollywood Cemetery with the Rev. Charles McKenzie officiating. Willie T. Jones
SUFFOLK, Va. - Willie Thomas Jones, 77, a native of Gates County, died Sept. 26, 3003 in Autumn Care of Suffolk.
Jones retired as a bus driver for Suffolk City Transit and was also a former Suffolk police officer. Jones was the son of the late Hersey Thomas Jones and Clara Jones and the widower of Beulah Mae Hale Jones.
A graveside service was held Sept. 30, 2002 in Holly Lawn Cemetery by the Rev. Pete Bowman. Memorials may be made to the American Heart Association Mid-Atlantic Affiliate, Memorials and Tributes Processing Center, P.O. Box 5216, Glen Alien, Va., 23058-5216.
Survivors include two daughters, Pamela J. Smith of Laurel, Del., and Yvette J. Baurne of Seaford, Del.; four grandchildren and a great-grandchild.
Jeremiah M. Hall
VIRGINIA BEACH, Va.-- Rev. Jeremiah M. Hall, 88, died Sept. 27, 2002.
A member of Moyock, he was the widower of Isabel 0. Hall and retired after 21 years from Naval Air Station. Hall was a member of New Hope Baptist Church, Virginia Beach.
The Rev. Hall pastored at five churches, three in Virginia: Pleasant Valley Baptist Church, Chesapeake; Little Piney Grove Baptist Church (Creeds), Virginia Beach; and Weeping Mary Baptist Church, Chesapeake; which was rebuilt under his pastorate in 1966; and two churches in North Carolina, Zion Tabernacle Baptist Church in Corapeake and Galatia Baptist Church in Hertford.
A funeral was held Sept. 30, 2002 in New Hope Baptist Church, Virginia Beach by the Rev. E. Ray Cox. Burial will be in Roosevelt Memorial Park, Chesapeake.
Survivors include a daughter, Delores dark of Norfolk; two grandsons; one granddaughter; five great-grandsons; two god-daughters.
