Vance County – Ms. Autuma Dawkins, infant daughter of Ms. Simpathy Clark and Larry Dawkins departed this life Sept. 10, 1999. She was born May 2, 1999, in Vance County. Surviving are her parents, grandparents, two brothers, three sisters, cousins, other relatives and friends. Graveside service will be at 3 p.m. today in Warrenton.

Lexington – Robert “Bob” Lee Mize Sr., 79, died Sept. 11, 1999. Surviving is his wife, Sue Mize. Funeral will be 12:30 p.m. Wednesday at Piedmont Funeral Home, Timberlake Chapel.
Willie Padgett
High Point – Willie James Padgett, 73, of 417 Cable St. died Sept. 12, 1999, at High Point Regional Hospital, where he had been a patient 12 days. He was born in Saluda, S.C., a son of Posey and Cora Matthews Padgett. He graduated from Saluda Rosenwall High School and in 1944, he came to High Point to make his home. He was a member and one of the founders of Mt. Zion Baptist Church, a member of the trustee board, senior and spiritual choirs, and served on the finance committee board. He was a retired employee of the High Point city water department. His only son, Freddie Lee Padgett, preceded him in death May 5, 1983. He also was preceded in death by his parents. Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Elnora Abney Padgett of the home; one daughter, Ms. Shirleen Padgett of High Point; five grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; one brother, Bennie Padgett of Philadelphia; and other relatives and friends. Funeral will be 3 p.m. Wednesday at Mt. Zion Baptist Church by the Rev. Alphonzo Martin. Burial will be in Oakwood Memorial Park. Visitation will be 2:30 p.m. Wednesday at the church and other times at the residence. Haizlip Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Sylvia Porter
High Point – Mrs. Sylvia Watson Porter, 75, of 3951 Johnson St. died Sept. 12, 1999, at her residence. She was born March 11, 1924, in Mintonville, Ky., a daughter of Winford Alister and Ruth Hughes Watson. She had been a resident of High Point for 24 years and was a homemaker. On April 20, 1946, she married Bobby P. Porter, who survives of the home. Also surviving are two daugthers, Mrs. Rebecca A. Bess and her husband, the Rev. Walter Bess of Fairfax, Calif., and Mrs. Cynthia L. Price and her husband, Jim, of High Point; a son, John M. Porter of Greensboro; two sisters, Mrs. Cleta Callahan of Cincinnati and Mrs. Peggy Snyder of Science Hill, Ky.;and two grandchildren, Erik Price and Matthew Price. Funeral will be 2 p.m. Friday at Morris & Hislope Funeral Home Chapel in Science Hill. Burial will be in Valley Oak Cemetery in Argyle, Ky. Visitation will be 7-8:30 p.m. Wednesday at Sechrest Funeral Home in High Point and one hour before the service in Science Hill. Vickie Shirley
Archdale – Ms. Vickie Lynn Shirley, 46, of 6346 Ashbrook Circle died Sept. 13, 1999, at her residence. She was born Jan. 12, 1953, in Guilford County, a daughter of Zeanious and Earline Britt Shirley. She had at one time worked at the Sheltered Workshop in High Point and was a member of Pilot View Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her parents; her stepmother, Mrs. Dorothy Goodwin; and a brother, Archie Shirley. Surviving are two brothers, Jimmy O’Neil Shirley Sr. and his wife, Edith, of the home and Jesse R. Shirley of Thomasville; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at Pilot View Baptist Church by the Rev. John Bishop and the Rev. Bynum Orr. Burial will be in Floral Garden Park Cemetery. Visitation will be 7-8:30 tonight at Sechrest Funeral Home, 120 Trindale Road. Memorials may be directed to Hospice of the Piedmont, 1801 Westchester Drive, High Point, N.C. 27262. Lexington – Mrs. Hazel Murray Hinson Shoaf, 75, died Sept. 13, 1999, at High Point Regional Hospital after a critical illness of eight weeks. Funeral will be 2 p.m. Thursday at First United Methodist Church. Visitation will be 6:30-8:30 p.m. Wednesday at Davidson Funeral Home.
Evelyn Washburn
High Point – Mrs. Evelyn Smith Washburn, 73, of 4104 Ponce DeLeon Drive died Sept. 12, 1999, at Duke University Medical Center. She was born July 14, 1926, in Texarkana, Texas, a daughter of Edward Guy and Lyndell Sanders Smith. A resident of the High Point area since 1980, she was a homemaker and a member of Deep River Friends Meeting. She served as a library secretary in DeKalb County, Ga., and volunteered for various organizations including: Cerebral Palsy, Meals on Wheels, Girl Scouts, the Cancer Society and was past Volunteer of the Year at Evergreens Nursing Center. She also was a member of North State Telephone Co. Pioneers. On June 2, 1951, she married Roland Elsworth Washburn, who survives of the residence. Also surviving are two daughters, Mrs. David (Sheila) Laird of Atlanta and Mrs. Michael (Sheryl) Hendrix of Colfax; two brothers, Arthur Smith and Edward (Dutch) Guy Smith, both of Texarkana; and four grandchildren, Heather Laird, Kelly Laird, Casey Elizabeth Hendrix and Abbie Hendrix. Funeral will be 11 a.m. Thursday at Deep River Friends Meeting by the Rev. John H. Sides. Burial will be in the meeting house cemetery. Visitation will be 7-8:30 p.m. Wednesday at Cumby Family Funeral Service in High Point. Benny Boyles
Thomasville – Mrs. Benny Hooper Boyles, 84, a resident of Rich Fork Acres died Sept. 19, 1999, in the Community General Hospital. She was born May 1, 1915, a daughter of Lloyd Hooper and Agnes Bradley Hooper. She was a homemaker and was a former employee with the Belk Department Stores. She was associated with Thomasville Coca–Cola Bottling Company. She was of the Methodist faith. On January 1, 1934, she was married to Joseph William Boyles, Jr., who preceded her in death August 28, 1952. Surviving are one daughter, Mrs. Nell Boyles Hughes and a grandson, Edward Joseph Hughes, both of Thomasville; one great–granddaughter, Brittani Taylor Hughes; two sisters, Mrs. Nelma Hood of Rock Hill, S.C. and Mrs. Walter (Frances) Thompson of Winter Springs, Fla.; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at Thomasville City Cemetery, with the Rev. Wilbur A. Jarrett officiating. The body will remain at the J.C. Green and Sons Funeral Home until the service hour. No formal visitation will be held.

High Point – Mal Grant Byerly, 86, of 218 W. Ray St. died Sept. 19, 1999, at Beverly Health Care of Thomasville. He was born March 7, 1913, in Davidson County, a son of Jeremiah and Pearl Billings Byerly. Surviving are one sister, Miss Wilma Byerly of the Piedmont Christian Home and one brother, Lynn Byerly of Lexington. Funeral will be 4 p.m. Tuesday at Cotton Grove United Methodist Church Cemetery, with Dr. Jerry Moore officiating. Visitation will be today from 7–8:30 p.m. at Sechrest Funeral Home, 1301 E. Lexington Avenue.
