John Kimsey
High Point - John Richard Kimsey, 75, died March 31, 2000, at his residence.
He was born Oct. 18, 1924, in Davidson County, a son of Silas Singleton and Mamie Shuler Kimsey, who preceded him in death. He served in the U.S. Air Force and U.S. Army during World War II and was later employed with the Town of Jamestown.
Surviving are two sisters, Silene Baker of Valdosta, Ga., and Blanche Nicholson and her husband, Eugene, of Julian; two brothers, Harold Kimsey and his wife, Lou, of Oak Ridge and James Kimsey and his wife, Peggy, of High Point.
Private graveside services will be held in Greensboro. Cumby Family Funeral Service, High Point, is handling arrangements.
William Lankford
High Point - William Lankford, 79, of 3805 Pineview Ave. died March 31, 2000, at High Point Regional Hospital after a short illness.
He was born June 26, 1920, in Tellico Plains, Tenn., a son to Gen. Earl and Dora Elizabeth Hall Lankford. A resident of High Point for the past 46 years, he was a veteran of the U.S. Army, having served during World War II, and was a retired employee after 30 years of service from Monarch Furniture Co. He was an avid woodcrafter and fisherman. He was a member of First Pentecostal Holiness Church and the Men's Fellowship Sunday School Class. He was married for 50 years to the former Dorothy Jackson, who survives of the home.
Surviving are a son, Gary Earl Lankford and his wife, Linda, of Trinity; three daughters, Mrs. Michael (Linda) Zeher of New Hope, Pa., Ms. Janice Parker of the residence and Mrs. John (Rose Mary) Miller of Thomasville; 12 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and three aunts, Rosa Tripp, Gladys Sitzlar and Mae Johnson.
Funeral will be 11 a.m. Monday in the chapel of Cumby Family Funeral Service in Archdale with the Rev. Ronald D. Carpenter, the Rev. Billy Taylor and the Rev. Danny Stephens. Burial will follow in the Floral Garden Park Cemetery.
Grandsons will serve as pallbearers.
Visitation is 7 to 8:30 tonight and at other times at the home of his son, Gary Lankford, 3996 Shadydale Acres, Trinity.

Lexington - Mrs. Lela Leonard Snyder, 80, of 3181 W. Old U.S. Highway 64, died April 1, 2000, in Forsyth Memorial Hospital. Funeral arrangements will be announced by Piedmont Funeral Home.
Gordan Washam
Thomasville - Gordan Gray Washam, 67, of Landview Drive, died April 1, 2000, at his residence.
He was born Jan. 30, 1933, the son of Worth and Alice Wood Washam. He was employed at Furniture Land South and formerly at Alma Desk of High Point. He was a member of the Aid Association for Lutherans and was an elder at Grace Lutheran Church. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean conflict and was awarded a National Defense Service Medal in 1955.
Surviving are his wife, Carolyn Duncan Washam of the home; a daughter, Donna Dunagan and her husband, Paul, of Garden City, S.C.; two sons, Timothy Washam and his wife, Lanie, of Mt. Olive and Tom Washam and his wife, Janet, of White Hall, Ohio; two step-sons, Edward Gallimore and his wife, Janet, of Thomasville and Steve Gallimore and his wife, Tabitha, of Thomasville; a brother, Garfield Washam and his wife, Reba, of High Point; a sister, Viola Siss Williams of Thomasville; eight grandchildren, five step-grandchildren; and a great-grandchild.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. Monday at the Harold C. Davis Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will be in Holly Hill Cemetery.
Visitation is 7 to 9 tonight at the funeral home.

Donziel Logan
High Point - Donziel Logan, 40, of 602 Runyon Drive died April 1, 2000, in High Point Regional Hospital.
He was born in Pittsylvania County, Va., on March 31, 1960, and was a son of the late Raymond and Earl Logan Harris of High Point.
He received his education in the public schools of New Canaan, Conn. He was employed as a shipping clerk at Innerpack Inc. of High Point and was a member of Temple Memorial Baptist Church, also in High Point.
In addition to his mother, Earl Logan Harris of High Point, he is survived by a daughter, Tequaila (Darcie) Brown of Baltimore; three brothers, Lawrence Logan and Raymond Logan Jr., both of Gretna, Va., and Leroy Logan of Tampa, Fla.; three sisters, Evelyn Davis of Gretna, and Marion Fitzgerald and Lisa Walton, both of High Point; and many other relatives and friends.
Funeral will be 1 p.m. Wednesday from the chapel of Miller Funeral Home in Gretna by the Rev. R.P. King. Burial will follow in the Logan Family Cemetery. The family will be at the residence of a sister and brother-in-law, the Rev. Toise Davis, of 3942 Rockford School Road, Gretna.

Ola Oakley
Denton - Mrs. Ola Stevenson Oakley, 84, of 292 N. Main St., died April 1, 2000, at High Point Regional Hospital following an illness of 13 days.
She was born March 24, 1916, in Iredell County, a daughter of John Edgbert Stevenson and Margaret Reid Stevenson. She was a homemaker and had worked as a nursing assistant. She had worked with her husband in several communities as he served as a minister of the Western North Carolina Methodist Conference.
Surviving are her husband, the Rev. John S. Oakley of the home; one son, Danny Oakley and his wife, Lori, of Thomasville; two daughters, Peggy Slack and her husband, Robert, of Denton and Barbara Kiker and her husband, Harold, of Peachland; four grandchildren, Michelle S. Tucker and her husband, Dean, Scott Kiker, Adam Oakley and Andrew Oakley; two great-grandchildren, Seth Tucker and Health Tucker.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at First United Methodist Church, where she was a member, by the Rev. Dan Money, the Rev. Sandy Young and Dr. Howard G. Allred. Burial will be in Mountain View Memorial Gardens. Visitation will be 7-8:30 tonight at Briggs Funeral Home and at other times at the residence.

Gladys Robbins
High Point - Mrs. Gladys Henderson Robbins, 92, of Wesleyan Arms Retirement Center, died April l, 2000, at the center.
She was born Jan. 4, 1908, in Guilford County, a daughter of Walter Henderson and Lula Clodfelter Henderson. She was a retired employee of Melrose Hosiery Mill. She was married in 1923 to Lawrence Harrison Robbins Sr., who preceded her in death in 1969. She also was preceded in death by a son, Lawrence Harrison Robbins Jr., who died April 12, 1993.
Surviving are one sister, Mrs. Iola Garner of Greensboro; two grandchildren, Ms. Betsy Anne Robbins of Atlanta and Charles 'Doug' Robbins of Greensboro.
Funeral will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at J.C. Green & Sons Chapel by the Rev. James Smith. Burial will be in Pleasant Grove United Methodist Church Cemetery. Visitation will be 7-9 tonight at the funeral home.
Frances Smith
Trinity - Mrs. Frances Howell Smith, 79, of 7224 N.C. 62 died April 2, 2000, at High Point Regional Hospital.
She was born in Guilford County Oct. 8, 1920, a daughter of Earl C. and Josie Johnston Howell.
She was a resident of the Trinity area for 75 years and retired from Adam Millis after 40 years of service.
She was a member of the Philathia Sunday School Class of Trinity Memorial United Methodist Church, where she was a member since 1932. She also was a member of Trinity Baptist Church Sunshine Fellowship.
On June 7, 1941, she married Forrest W. Smith, who preceded her in death Sept. 26, 1990.
Surviving are two sons, Forrest Kirk Smith of Cary and Earl Howell Smith and wife, Sarah, of Concord; and three grandchildren, Adam Smith, Paul Smith and Drew Smith.
Funeral will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Chapel of Cumby Family Funeral Service in Archdale with the Rev. Janice Combs and the Rev. J.C. Alley officiating. Burial will follow in Trinity Cemetery. Visitation will be 7-8:30 tonight at the funeral home and at other times at the residence.

James Spencer
High Point - James Haywood 'Squirrel' Spencer, 46, formerly of Baltimore, died March 30, 2000, in High Point following several years of declining health.
He was born April 10, 1953, in Hamlet. He was the adopted son of Verdell Pratt. He graduated from High Point Central High School and was employed by Sears Telelmarketing Service.
Surviving are two daughters, Keisha Moore and Tyeisha Moore, both of High Point; one sister, Barbara (Wilbert) Dow of High Point; four brothers, Jesse (Katie) Pratt, Walter (Mary) Pratt, James (Kitty) Spencer and Jerry (Brenda) Pratt, all of High Point; two grandchildren; special friends, Rosa Dumas, Betty Garrett, Gary Boss and Orris Boatwright; and a host of nieces, nephews and friends.
Visitation will be 7-9 tonight at the home of Barbara Dow, 1716 Cedrow Drive. A memorial service will be held at a later date. Hoover's Funeral Home is in charge of final arrangements.
Charlie Bowman
ARCHDALE - Charlie Earlie Bowman, 87, of 5143 Ellen Ave. died April 2, 2000, at his residence.
He was a friend to all who knew him, he was a wonderful husband, father and grandfather. He was born Aug. 17, 1912, in Patrick County, Va., a son of Tate Tyre Rufus and Martha Niten Bowman, who preceded him in death. He played tenor banjo and violin on the Grand Old Opry during the 1930's. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He worked for L.B. Price Mercantile Co. serving the Thomasville area from 1950 to 1984. He opened his own company, C.E. Bowman Mercantile Co. He was a member of Holly Hill Wesleyan Church and the Joy Sunday School Class. He was married to the former Miss Elza Bledsoe, who preceded him in death Feb. 25, 2000. He also was preceded in death by four brothers, John Bowman, Jace Bowman, Tyre Bowman and Hobart Bowman; two sisters, Ila Epperson and Lehia Bergeron.
Surviving are two daughters, Brenda M. Tyndall of Trinity and Gay Nell Parks of San Francisco; two sisters, Virgie McMillan of Winston-Salem and Nettie Barnard of Stuart, Va.; three grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
Funeral will be 3 p.m. Wednesday at Holly Hill Wesleyan Church by the Rev. Mark Mullins. Burial will be in Holly Hill Memorial Park Cemetery. The body will be placed in the church 30 minutes prior to the service. Visitation will be 7-9 tonight at the funeral home and other times at the residence.

Frank Fallenstein
THOMASVILLE - Frank Thomas Fallenstein, 76, of 1307 Liberty Drive died April 2, 2000, at High Point Regional Hospital.
He was born Aug. 21, 1923, in Guilford County, a son of Frederick Theodore and Maude Coleman Fallenstein. He retired from Sears, Roebuck and Co. as a service technician. After his retirement, he enjoyed volunteering at Fifth Street Shelter Ministries of Statesville and was honored as volunteer of the year in 1993.
He was a U.S. Army veteran, having served in World War II in the European Theater with the 142nd Infantry Regiment, 36th Division, and was awarded the Purple Heart. He was a member of Park Place Baptist Church and the Senior Men's Sunday School Class. On June 29, 1951, he married Alice Bryant, who survives of the residence.
Also surviving are two daughters, Cindy Fallenstein Biesecker and her husband, Stewart, and their daughter, Bethany, all of Lexington and Sheri Fallenstein Coarsey and her husband, Stephen, and their children, Eben, Chad and Lucy, all of Statesville.
Funeral will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at J.C. Green & Sons Chapel by the Rev. Mark Sink. Burial will be in Holly Hill Memorial Park Cemetery with military rites conducted by Randolph County Honor Guard. Visitation will be 7-9 tonight at the funeral home and other times at the residence, 1307 Liberty Drive.

Hallie Gripper
HIGH POINT - Mrs. Hallie Christian Gripper, 90, of 1416 Bragg Ave. died April 1, 2000, at her residence. She had been in declining health five months.
She was born in New London, a daughter of Charlie and Lizzie Palmer Christian, who preceded her in death. She lived in High Point 70 years and was an active member of Temple Memorial Baptist Church. She was a member of Missionary Circle I, and Daughters of Temple. She was a member of the Southside Senior Citizens Club. She was preceded in death by her husband, Johnny Gripper, Sept. 7, 1984. She was preceded in death by a son, Donald Ray Gripper, Nov. 11, 1992; two sisters, Stella Brown and Amelia Christian, and a brother, Vastie Christian.
Surviving are three sons, Orlando Charles 'Bro' (Rose) Gripper of Los Angeles, Lenon Louis (Miriam) Gripper of Lancaster, Calif., and Johnny (Alva) Gripper of Greensboro; two daughters, Mrs. Pearlene G. Monk (George) of High Point, and Mrs. Shirley G. Linton (Robert) of Greensboro; eight grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, in-laws, other relatives and friends.
Funeral will be 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at Temple Memorial Baptist Church by the Rev. Haywood Gray. Burial will be in Carolina Biblical Gardens. Visitation will be 1 p.m. Wednesday at the church and other times at 501 Crestline Drive.

Bessie Hill
VINTON, Va. - Mrs. Bessie Lula Wallace Snider Hill, 90, formerly of Thomasville, died April 2, 2000, in Roanoke Memorial Hospital.
She was born Aug. 10, 1909, in Guilford County, a daughter of Jonah Harsell and Annie Mariah Varner Wallace. She retired from Amazon Cotton Mills, where she was employed for 52 years. She was a member of Bethel United Methodist Church in Thomasville, and a former member of the church choir. She was first married to James Casey Snider, who preceded her in death in 1971. Her second husband, Vance Hill, also preceded her in death in 1985.
Surviving are a daughter, Mrs. Dorothy P. Scoggins of Vinton; one stepdaughter, Mrs. Pauline Lavender of High Point; her daughter-in-law, Mrs. Lois Hill of Kernersville; a sister, Mrs. Ruth Maxine Goodknight of Virginia Beach; a brother, Tom Wallace and his wife, Shelby, of Thomasville; two grandchildren, Steve C. McCulloch and his wife, Pam, of Roanoke, Va. and Jim McCulloch and his wife, Lana of Vinton; three stepgrandchildren, Donnie Hill, Gary Lavender and Lynn White and her husband, Steve, all of Kernersville. Three great-grandchildren; and one great-great-granddaughter.
Funeral will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at Bethel United Methodist Church by the Rev. Ben Sheppard and the Rev. Hillis Burton. Burial will be in Snider Family Cemetery, Churchland. The body will be at the Family Funeral Care, 18 Randolph St., Thomasville, until placed in the church 30 minutes prior to the service.
