Ruth Hunt
Thomasville - Mrs. Ruth Susan Kennedy Hunt, 90, of 344 Gray Rock Road died April 12, 2000, at Randolph Memorial Hospital.
She was born Nov. 8, 1909, in Randolph County, a daughter of Alf Kennedy and Lillie Miller Kennedy. She was a homemaker and a member of Westfield Baptist Church. On September 10, 1941, she married Luther Thomas Hunt, who preceded her in death Feb. 11, 1978.
Surviving are three daughters, Mrs. Myrtle Hunt Ridge of Shelby, Ms. Mildred Ann Hunt of Trinity and Mrs. Betty Hunt Causey of Asheboro; two sons, Bill R. Hunt of Lexington and Luther Thomas Hunt Jr. of Franklinville; eight grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Westfield Baptist Church by the Rev. Doug Stevens and the Rev. Ray Swaney. Burial will be in the church cemetery. The body will be at Family Funeral Care, Thomasville. Visitation will be 7-8:30 tonight at the funeral home.

Kenneth Messer
High Point - Kenneth Wayne Messer, 46, of 5675 Old Thomasville Road, went to be with the Lord April 12, 2000.
He was born Dec. 27, 1953, in Monroeville, Ala., a son of Elijah and Annie Mae Rowell Messer. He was a graduate of Trinity High School Class of 1972. He was a truck driver by profession and was currently employed by Claude Gable. He was known by his trucker friends as 'Round Found.' He was of the Baptist faith.
Surviving are his parents of the residence; a brother, Larry Messer of Bassett, Va.; two sisters, Brenda Saunders of High Point and Teresa Ramsey and her husband, Gary, of Archdale; a nephew, Chris Saunders; two nieces, Megan and Kristin Ramsey.
Funeral will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Harold C. Davis Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Ray Butler. Burial will be in Floral Garden Park Cemetery. Visitation will be 7-9 tonight at the funeral home and other times at the residence.
Mildred Penry
Denton - Mrs. Mildred Suggs Penry, 86, died April 12, 2000.
Memorial service will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Central United Methodist Church. Visitation will be after the service at the church Fellowship Hut.

Troy - James Franklin Roark, 61, of 2921 NC 134N died April 12, 2000, at FirstHealth Montgomery Memorial Hospital.

Lexington - John David West, 75, of Virginia Drive died at 5:30 p.m. at Forsyth Medical Center in Winston-Salem.

Olympian Harry Williamson dies
Harry Williamson
Charlotte - Harry Webb Williamson, 86, died April 8, 2000, at Presbyterian Hospital, after a long illness.
He was born July 11, 1913, in High Point, a son of Harry R. Williamson and Lula Webb, who preceded him in death. He was a graduate of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, class of 1936. While there, he was the first Olympic track athlete from North Carolina, participating in the 1936 Olympic Games held in Berlin, Germany. After serving in the U.S. Navy during World War II, he worked for Hanes Knitting Co. and then McCrary Acme Corp. Retiring in 1962, he moved to Myrtle Beach, S.C., and then to Charlotte. In May 1999, he was inducted into the North Carolina Sports Hall of Fame. He was preceded in death by his son, Stephen Williamson.
Surviving are his wife, Mildred Beasley Williamson; his son, Harry C. Williamson of Santa Rosa, Calif.
Memorial service will be 11 a.m. Monday at Westminister Presbyterian Church by the Rev. Andrew Smith.

Vilene Hoover
Asheboro - Mrs. Vilene Hoover, 67, died April 13, 2000.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. Monday at Asheboro Pentecostal Holiness Church. Visitation will be 6:30-8:30 p.m. Sunday at Ridge Funeral Home.
Leo Mortimer
Greensboro - Leo Mortimer, 84, died April 5, 2000, after declining health of several months.
He was born May 4, 1915, in Dorchester, Mass. He had been a resident of High Point since 1959, and also lived in Charlotte, Stokesdale and Greensboro in recent years. In November 1945, he married Virginia Willis Mortimer, who preceded him in death in February 1990. He was subsequently married to Iris Peters of Thomasville in June 1991, who also preceded him in death in February 1999.
He was a U.S. Navy veteran, having served as a salvage diver during World War II in Le Havre, France, following the D-Day invasion. After working briefly as a vocational education teacher, he began a career as a sales representative, working for Rockwell Manufacturing, Swingline and International Staple. He became an independent manufacturer's representative when he moved to High Point. He was well known in statewide Toastmasters since the 1960s and remained an active Toastmaster into the last year prior to his death.
Surviving are five children, Lee Mortimer of Durham, Margaret Mortimer of Atlanta, Beth Foy of Cincinnati, Judy Meyler of Greensboro, Allen Mortimer of Chattanooga, Tenn.; a brother, Thomas Mortimer of Barrington, R.I.; and seven grandchildren.
A memorial service was held Friday at Fellowship Presbyterian Church, 2005 New Garden Road.

Esther Rimer
Lexington - Esther Hendrix Rimer, 79, of Centerclair Nursing Home, formerly of Oak Avenue, died at 5 a.m. April 14, 2000, at the nursing home.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. Sunday at Davidson Funeral Home, Lexington Chapel. Visitation will be 1-2 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.
Bessie Russell
Yadkinville - Mrs. Bessie Howell Russell, 97, of 2408 Mills Road died at 3:15 a.m. April 14, 2000, at Yadkin Heritage.
She was born March 27, 1903, in Yadkin County, a daughter of Robert Lee and Ida Mackie Howell. She was a homemaker and had been a resident of the Pilot View Friends Church community all of her life. She was educated at Yadkin Normal School and was a teacher at Spillman School. She was active in church, serving as a choir member, a pianist, a Sunday school teacher, a member of the Women's Missionary Circle and the Ladies' Quilting Circle. She was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Hazel Marie, 1923-1925; by her husband, Charilaus Russell Dec. 5, 1966; and a sister, Annie Howell Pardue.
Surviving are a daughter, Jessie Dean Kemp of High Point; two sons, Roger Lee Russell of Yadkinville and James Richard Russell of Jackson, S.C.; four grandchildren, Jon Kemp of High Point, Diane Lewis of North Augusta, S.C., Kelly Lunsford of Alexander City, Ala., and J. Richard Russell of Lexington; and three great-grandchildren, Leah Marie Kemp, Julie Susanne Kemp, Russell Lee Lunsford and Bethany Russell.
Funeral will be 2:30 p.m. Sunday at Gentry Family Chapel by the Rev. C.G. White and the Rev. Barry Davis. Burial will be in Pilot View Church Cemetery. Visitation will be 7-8 tonight at the Gentry Family Funeral Home, on US 601, north of Yadkinville.
The family wishes to express its gratitude to the staff of Yadkin Heritage Extended Care Facility of Hoots Memorial Hospital for their help and special, kind care and to Mrs. Goldie Hutchins of Yadkinville, who cared for her and brought joy to her life while she was able to live at her residence.

Marvin Stilley
Florence, S.C. - Marvin Albert 'Jack' Stilley, 67, died April 13, 2000, at Carolinas Hospital System.
He was born March 7, 1933, in High Point, N.C., a son of Joseph McNalley and Fannie McAbee Stilley. He was married to Thurlene Stilley. He was a member of Immanuel Baptist Church, and the Bob Johnson Sunday School Class. He was a Gideon and a 32 degree Mason. He was a salesman for Merita Bakeries and a U.S. Army veteran. He was an avid outdoorsman, who enjoyed hunting, fishing and camping. He was a devoted husband, father and family man. He was preceded in death by his father.
Surviving are his wife of the residence; his mother of Archdale, N.C.; a son, Joey Glenn (Pam) Stilley of Catawba, N.C.; two daughters, Kathy (Bernie) Bottoms of Richmond, Va., and Karen Lee Stilley of Florence; a granddaughter, Angie Bottoms of Richmond; a grandson, Christopher Bottoms of Richmond; a sister, Marie Harris of Archdale; and a brother, James Stilley of Archdale; and numerous other loving family members.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. Sunday at Immanuel Baptist Church. Burial will be private in High Point. Visitation will be 6-8 tonight at Cain-Poston Funeral Home Chapel.

John Wall Jr.
Pinnacle - John Wesley Wall Jr., 70, of 1045 McIntosh Lane went to be with Jesus at 12:02 a.m. April 13, 2000, at his residence.
He was born Oct. 25, 1929, in Surry County, a son of John Wesley and Bessie Cummings Wall.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. today at Pine Hill Friends Meeting.

Tim Passmore
Jamestown - Tim C. Passmore, 33, of 5854 Riverdale Road died April 15, 2000, at High Point Regional Hospital after a long battle with cancer.
He was born Feb. 10, 1967, in Guilford County, a son of James Coyett and Carolyn Williams Passmore. He was employed with Marsh Furniture Co.
Surviving are his mother, Carolyn Williams Passmore of High Point; his father and step-mother, James C. and Wanda Passmore of Butler, Tenn.; a half-brother, Jamie Passmore of High Point; a step-sister, Jessica Passmore of Butler, Tenn.; and his paternal grandmother, Eula Passmore of Topton.
Funeral will be 3 p.m. Tuesday at Bales Memorial Wesleyan Church with the Rev. Harold Bumby and the Rev. James Grant. Burial will follow at Guilford Memorial Park Cemetery.
