Lenwood Ivery Sr.
High Point - Lenwood Ivery Sr., 72, of Sunbridge of the Triad, formerly of 602 Ellwood Drive, died Oct. 2, 1999, at the Triad facility.
He was born in Salisbury, a son of Lieutenant and Velma Lee Maxwell Ivery. He had resided in High Point since 1973, but kept his church membership at Hall’s Chapel Primitive Baptist Church in Salisbury. He also was supportive of the ongoing programs at St. Luke Lutheran Church in High Point. He was a retired employee of Floyd S. Pike Electric Construction, Mt. Airy, with more than 15 years of service. He was preceded in death by a son, Walter Ray; his parents; three brothers, Eugene, Gilbert and Clarence; and two sisters, Elizabeth and Janie Ruth Ellis.
Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Iris Foard Ivery of 602 Ellwood Drive; four sons, James Ivery of Pennsylvania, Lenwood Ivery Jr. and his wife, Ingrid, of High Point, Chauncey Ford of Waldorf, Md., and Bernard Ford of Butner; one daughter, Mrs. Bernadette Ford Small of Greensboro; nine grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; one brother, Robert Ivery of Salisbury; an aunt; and several nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.
Funeral will be 2:30 p.m. Thursday at St. Luke Lutheran Church by the Rev. James McDaniels and Elder Richard Johnson. Burial will be in Carolina Biblical Gardens. Visitation will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at the church and other times at the residence.

Adron Jones
Thomasville - Adron Bryan Jones, 77, of 413 E. Holly Hill Road died Oct. 3, 1999, at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem.
He was born July 25, 1922, in High Point, a son of Avery B. and Grace Lee Jones. He had been a resident of High Point and King before moving to Thomasville in 1989. He was a graduate of Allen Jay High School in 1939 and attended Jones Business College. He was a U.S. Army Air Corp veteran of World War II. He was employed for 34 years with the U.S. Postal Service, where he worked for 26 years as a letter carrier in High Point and had retired as postmaster in King. He was a former member of Green Street Baptist Church and was a member of First Wesleyan Church in High Point. On Feb. 27, 1942, he married Miss Doris Conally, who survives of the home.
Also surviving are a son, Dale Jones of Thomasville; two sisters, Mrs. Tom (Vera) Williams of Fayetteville, Ga., and Miss Brenda Jones of High Point; two grandchildren, Bryan Jones and Mrs. Darrell (Traci) Lynch; and two great-grandchildren, Miss Whitney Lynch and Zachary Lynch. He was preceded in death by a son, Douglas Ray Jones.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at the chapel of Cumby Family Funeral Service in High Point by the Rev. Carroll M. Upton. Burial will be in Floral Garden Park Cemetery. Visitation will be 7-9 tonight at the funeral home and other times at the residence.

Phillip Speaks
Winston-Salem - Phillip Lynn Speaks, 53, died Oct. 2, 1999, at Forsyth Medical Center.
He was born Feb. 21, 1946, in Forsyth County, a son of Howard G. and Avelene Tise Speaks. He was a graduate of High Point College and a past employee of the High Point Enterprise. He was of the Baptist faith and was preceded in death by a brother, Donald G. Speaks.
Surviving are one sister, Mrs. Betty Lou Pass and her husband, Rex, of Clemmons and a brother, Jerry W. Speaks and his wife, Frankie, of Winston–Salem.
Memorial service will be 7 tonight at Hayworth-Miller Chapel by Dr. Guy Hipp. Visitation will follow the service.

Edwin Brown
High Point - Edwin Sykes Brown, 78, of 208 Seward Ave. died Oct. 4, 1999, at Moses Cone Hospital in Greensboro.
He was born April 26, 1921, in Guilford County, a son of Elijah M. and Talitha Cumi Sykes Brown. He was employed as a mail carrier by the U.S. Postal Service, retiring in 1980 after 34 years of service. He was a veteran of World War II, having served in the U.S. Army Air Corps and was a member of Christ United Methodist Church. On May 29, 1954, he married the former Frances Elizabeth Holland, who survives of the home.
Also surviving are two sons, David H. Brown of High Point and Roger H. Brown of Japan; two sisters, Mrs. Mary Ritter and Mrs. Betty Stout, both of Holden Beach; and a grandson, Andrew Brown of High Point.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. Friday at Sechrest Chapel in Archdale by the Rev. Glenn Myers. Burial will be in Floral Garden Park Cemetery. Visitation will be 7-8:30 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home, 120 Trindale Road, Archdale.
James Hilliard
Lexington - James Keith Hilliard, 48, of Brown Street died Oct. 4, 1999, from injuries received in an automobile accident in Morganton.

Melton Lomax
Thomasville - Melton Vealey Lomax, 79, of 807 Liberty Drive died Oct. 4, 1999.
He was born Dec. 4, 1919, in Davidson County, a son of William Carl and Sula Morris Lomax. He was elected and served as Davidson County register of deeds from 1946 to 1958. He was a U.S. Army World War II veteran, serving in the European Theater. He was a member of the Davidson County Disabled Veterans, a representative for District 8 Disabled Veteran Affairs Volunteer Services and a member of Habitat for Humanity. He also was a member of the VFW, Woodmen of the World, Southside Baptist Church and attended Refuge Baptist Church. He was owner and operator of Lomax Cafe and Grocery Store. He was first married to Mrs. Hattie Corriher Lomax, who preceded him in death. He was then married to Mittie Frances McDowell, who survives of the home.
Also surviving are four daughters, Mrs. Ramonia Lomax Harris and her husband, Lindsey, of Myrtle Beach, S.C., Mrs. Sharon Lomax Ridge and her husband, Darrell, of Sophia, Mrs. Patty Batten Anderson and her husband, William, of Lexington and Mrs. Faye Batten Kluttz and her husband, George, of Salisbury; a sister, Mrs. Frances Rose of Thomasville; a brother, Harold Lomax of Thomasville; four grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. Thursday at J.C. Green & Sons Chapel by the Rev. Hearth Kennedy. Burial will be in Holly Hill Memorial Park. Visitation will be 7-9 tonight at the funeral home and other times at the residence.

Leo Morrison
High Point - Leo McAnally Morrison, 80, of 506 Ridgecrest Drive died Oct. 4, 1999, at his residence.
He was born April 11, 1919, in Guilford County, a son of Lonnie and Maggie Patrum Morrison. He had lived most of his life in High Point and retired from Pickett Cotton Mills. He was a U.S. Army veteran. In 1937, he married the former Katie Steelman, who survives of the home.
Also surviving are two sons, James Leroy Morrison of Thomasville and Michael Craige Morrison of Glenola; a sister, Mrs. Beatrice Clary of High Point; seven grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.
Funeral will be 1 p.m. Thursday at the chapel of Cumby Family Funeral Service in High Point. Burial will be in Floral Garden Park Cemetery. Visitation will be 7-8:30 tonight at the funeral home.
Leola Newell
Leland - Mrs. Leola Jester Newell, 90, of Brunswick Cove Nursing Home, formerly of Countryside Drive, High Point, died Oct. 5, 1999.
She was born Oct. 15, 1908, in High Point, a daughter of William P. and Mary E. Guyer Jester. In August 1931, she married Solomon Melvin Newell, who preceded her in death. She was employed by Sherrod Shirt Co. (now Alvin Brand) for 45 years, retiring in 1973. She was a member of Lebanon United Methodist Church.
Surviving are one daughter, Mary Jean (Zeb T.) Rhodes of Leland, and two grandchildren, Kent T. Rhodes and Mark A. Rhodes, both of Jackson, N.J.
Graveside service will be 2 p.m. Friday in Lebanon United Methodist Church Cemetery by the Rev. Carol Williams-Gilbert.
