Janice Davis
High Point - Mrs. Janice Helen Lamb Davis, 51, of 1740-C N. Hamilton St. died April 23, 2000.
She was born Nov. 7, 1948, in Guilford County, a daughter of James Hartford and Thelma Simmons Lamb. She was a lifelong resident of High Point and a 1967 graduate of High Point Central High School. She was a member of Fellowship Baptist Church in Greensboro. On July 11, 1968, she married Dwight A. Davis.
Surviving are her parents; her husband; a son and daughter-in-law, Bryan E. and Sheree Davis of High Point; and two sisters, Bonnie Manard of Sparta, Tenn., and Pam Register of Raleigh; a half sister, Amy Algiere of Thomasville; and a half brother, Jamie Lamb of High Point.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. Thursday at the chapel of Cumby Family Funeral Service, High Point, by the Rev. Marcus L. Campbell. Burial will be in Floral Garden Park Cemetery. Visitation will be 7-8:30 tonight at the funeral home and other times at the residence at 841 Lakecrest Drive.
George Estes Jr.
High Point - George Calvin Estes Jr., 80, of 900 Chestnut Drive died at 11:20 a.m. April 25, 2000, at High Point Regional Hospital after declining health of two months.
He was born Feb. 25, 1920, in Suffolk, Va., a son of Mr. and Mrs. George Calvin Estes Sr. He was a resident of High Point the majority of his life and employed with Valspar Corp. He was a U.S. Air Force veteran, serving during World War II. He was a member of Rankin Memorial United Methodist Church. On April 5, 1947, he was married to Esther Kalte, who survives of the residence.
Also surviving are a son, George Calvin “Butch” Estes III, head basketball coach at Guilford College and his wife, Tonya; two grandchildren, Brad and Drew Estes, both of Greer, S.C.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Rankin Memorial United Methodist Church by the Rev. G. Lee Pollock. Burial will be in Floral Garden Park Cemetery. Visitation will be 7-8:30 tonight at Cumby Family Funeral Service, High Point.
Charles Jordan
Lexington - Charles Vernon Jordan, 71, of Cardinal Drive died at 12:04 p.m. April 25, 2000, at Lexington Memorial Hospital after declining health of eight months.
Funeral will be 4 p.m. Thursday at Coggins Memorial Baptist Church. Visitation will be 6 to 8 tonight at Davidson Funeral Home.
Vesta Porter
McGrady - Mrs. Vesta Souther Porter, 98, of Dehart Church Road died April 24, 2000, at her residence.
She was born Aug. 24, 1901, in Wilkes County, a daughter of J.N. and Lillie Henderson Souther. She married Dewey Lester Porter, who preceded her in death. She was a member of Dehart Baptist Church, a former member of the choir and she was a Sunday school teacher. She also was preceded in death by a son, Kenneth Bradley Porter.
Surviving are seven sons, Joseph Leo Porter of Myerstown, Pa., Hoover C. Porter of Jacksonville, Fla., Charles Curtis Porter of Macon, Ga., Ralph Dewey Porter of Newbern, Tenn., McCoy Porter of Gardiner, Maine, George Wilmer Porter of the residence and Van MacArthur Porter of Alhambra, Calif.; five daughters, Juanita E. Myers of High Point, Lillie (Margaret) Emmert of Chino Hills, Calif., Doris L. Streett of El Cajon, Calif., Betty Sue Wyatt of North Wilkesboro and Arlena Faye Handy of McGrady; three brothers, Belo Souther of Statesville, Graydon Souther of Union Grove and Calvin Souther of North Wilkesboro; a sister, Alta French of Greensboro; 28 grandchildren; 46 great-grandchildren; and nine great-great grandchildren.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Dehart Baptist Church by the Rev. Dean Adams, the Rev. Burl Faw and the Rev. Amos Combs. The body will be placed in the church at 1:30 p.m. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Visitation will be 6-8 tonight at Miller Funeral Service, North Wilkesboro. The body will be taken to the residence immediately after visitation.

Ernie Staley
Archdale - Mrs. Ernie Voncannon Staley, 98, of Westwood Health and Rehab Center, formerly of 10303 N. Main St., died April 24, 2000, at High Point Regional Hospital.
She was born Oct. 10, 1901, in Randolph County, a daughter of Lihau and Luella Parks Voncannon. She was a resident of the Archdale area for 74 years. She retired from Amos Hosiery Co. after 40 years of service and was the oldest member of Archdale United Methodist Church. She married Walter John Staley, who preceded her in death.
Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Paul (Helen) Hunsucker of 443 Craven Drive, Asheboro, and Mrs. Thomas (Thelma) Hill of 4124 Beech Cove Trail, Vinton, Va.; two sisters, Mrs. Gertha Tucker of High Point and Mrs.. Glenna Graves of Asheboro; four grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
Funeral will be 11 a.m. Thursday at the chapel of Cumby Family Funeral Service, Archdale, by the Rev. Harold D. Shives. Burial will be in Floral Garden park Cemetery. Visitation will be 7-8:30 tonight at the funeral home.

Robert Thompson
Archdale - Robert Paul Thompson, 71, of 6549 Thompson Road died April 24, 2000, at High Point Regional Hospital.
He was born Aug. 5, 1928, in Guilford County, a son of John Carver and Olna Elry Cody Thompson. He was an employee of Clyde Pearson Co. retiring in 1994. He was a U.S. Army veteran serving in the Korean Conflict. He was of the Baptist faith. On Aug. 13, 1955, he married the former Betty Harrelson, who survives of the residence.
Also surviving are three daughters, Janice Thompson Blakely and Marilyn Thompson, both of Archdale and Carolyn Myers of Thomasville; a sister, Mrs. Vera Gray of Archdale; two brothers, David F. Thompson of Archdale and Harold Thompson of Sophia; and two grandchildren.
Funeral will be 3:30 p.m. Thursday at Sechrest Chapel, Archdale, by the Rev. Elton Welborn. Burial will be in Holly Hill Memorial Park. Visitation will be 2-3 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.
Raymond White
Archdale - Raymond Gibson White, 88, of 412 Trindale Road died April 24, 2000, at High Point Regional Hospital.
He was born March 3, 1912, in Guilford County, a son of James C. and Mattie Gibson White. He was a graduate of Trinity High School, Class of 1931 and attended High Point College. He retired from High Point-Thomasville and Denton Railroad in 1977 after 33 years of service. He was a member of Trinity Memorial United Methodist Church and the Adult Men’s Sunday School Class. On Feb. 18, 1937, he married the former Kathleen Johnson, who preceded him in death June 16, 1999.
Surviving are two sons, Joseph Harold White and his wife, Liz, of Apex and Charlie White and his wife, Joyce, of Concord; a sister, Lorena Dell Smith of Winston-Salem; two brothers, Francis E. White and William L. White of Trinity; four grandchildren, Christopher White, Tonya White, David White and Elizabeth White; and one great-grandchild, Alex.
Funeral will be 7:30 p.m. Thursday at Sechrest Chapel, Archdale, by the Rev. Janice Combs. Burial will be in Trinity Cemetery. Visitation will be 5-7 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.

Lexington - Flossie Beatrice McBride Barnes, 95, died April 21, 2000.

Rocky Mount - William (Bill) Hill, 63, died April 21, 2000.
He was born Jan. 26, 1937 in Bladen County, a son of the late William Jason and Estelle Vause Hill. He was a service technician with Ferrell Gas Co.
Surviving are his wife, Myrna Parker Watson Hill, of the home; one daughter, Karen Goins and her husband, Mike, of Thomasville; three sons, Stephen Hill and his wife, Lori, of Randleman, David Hill and his wife, Teresa, of Trinity, and Anthony Hill of Randleman; six grandchildren; two sisters, Gladys Briles of Archdale and Evelyn Hester of Trinity; two stepdaughters, Cindy Hayes of Tarboro and Pamela Pope of Sharpsburg; and one stepson, Thomas Watson Jr. of Miami, Fla.
Funeral will be 10 a.m. Tuesday at Johnson Funeral Home by the Rev. Ferrell Osborne. Graveside service will be 2 p.m. at Randolph Memorial Park, Asheboro. Visitation will be 7-8:30 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.

Dorothy Jiske
Atlanta, Ga. - Mrs. Dorothy H. Jiske, 80, died April 21, 2000.
She was a native of Thomasville, N.C., a daughter of Henry and Ada Hedrick. She was a civil service employee for 40 years at military locations in North Carolina and New York for the Department of Defense. She retired from the Defense Management Administration in Atlanta in 1983.
She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Barry and Sandra Jiske; grandchildren Kimberly and Jason Jiske; and six nieces and nephews.
Graveside service will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at Floral Garden Park Cemetery. Visitation will be 7-9 p.m. Monday at Sechrest Funeral Home on E. Lexington Avenue.
Charlotte Kerr
High Point - Mrs. Charlotte Sexton Kerr, 84, of 701 S. Elm St. died April 21, 2000, at the Human Service Alliance in Winston-Salem.
Mrs. Kerr was born in Alleghaney County on June 6, 1915 to the late William Floyd and Kate Holloway Sexton. She was retired from Silver Knit Hosiery. She was a member of the Southside Baptist Church and Faithful Workers Class. On March 29, 1947, she married James G. Kerr, who preceded her in death in 1984. Mrs. Kerr also was preceded in death by a sister, Ruth Sexton Huyler.
Surviving are two sisters, Ora Lee Leonard of High Point and Margaret Presnell of Virginia; one stepsister, Juanita Cates of High Point; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral will be 11 a.m. Tuesday in the Chapel of Cumby Family Funeral Service, Archdale, by the Rev. Bynum Orr. Interment will follow in Floral Garden Park Cemetery. Visitation will be 7-8:30 Monday at the funeral home.
