Ralph Hiatt
Norfolk, Va. - Ralph E. Hiatt, 84, of the 1200 block of Virgilina Avenue died April 20, 2000, at the local hospital.
He was born in North Carolina and married to Irene B. Hiatt. He retired from the Naval Air Rework Facility after working there 33 years as a painter.
Surviving are a daughter, Linda H. Kinch and her husband, Ralph, of Fredericksburg, Va.; two brothers, Chuck Hiatt of Raleigh and Ike Hiatt of Archdale; two grandchildren, Gene L. Kinch of Fredericksburg, Va., and Cindy K. Wargo of Falls Church, Va.; a great-grandson, Colin C. Wargo of Falls Church, Va., and many nieces and nephews.
Graveside service will be noon Monday at Forest Lawn Cemetery. Visitation will be 6:30-8:30 p.m. Sunday at Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home, Tidewater Drive Chapel, Norfolk, Va.
Rebecca Hornady
High Point - Ms. Rebecca Sue Robertson Hornady, 63, of 604 Clover Drive died April 19, 2000, at South Fulton Medical Center in Atlanta.
She was born Nov. 29, 1936, in Guilford County, a daughter of William Dewey and Mary Dickens Robertson. She was a resident of Fayetteville, Ga., for the past seven years. She retired in 1992 from Jefferson-Pilot Insurance Co. and was a member of First Presbyterian Church in High Point.
Surviving are two daughters, Ms. Laura Bishop of Alisoviejo, Calif., and Mrs. Robert (Lisa) Jones of England; a son, Ronald Lee Hornady Jr. and his wife, Kay, of Thomasville; a sister, Mrs. Wesley (Alice) Underwood of Fayetteville, Ga.; a brother, William Dewey Robertson Jr. of High Point; and six grandchildren, Melissa Conrad, Kevin Bishop, Alexander Bishop, Christopher Jones, Michael Jones and Brandon Jones.
Graveside service will be 3 p.m. Sunday in Oakwood Memorial Park Cemetery by Dr. R. Scott Woodmansee and the Rev. Lisa M. Mullen. The body will be at Family Funeral Care, 18 Randolph St., Thomasville. Visitation will be 7-9 tonight at the funeral home.

Eagle Springs - Mrs. Glenn Lewis Craven Kennedy, 86, of 9783 N.C. Hwy 705 died April 20, 2000, in FirstHealth Moore Regional Hospital in Pinehurst.
She was a native of Moore County, a daughter of Daniel C. and Sarah Bell Lewis. She was preceded in death by her first and second husbands, Farrell L. Craven and Sam Kennedy.
Surviving are a son, Tony Craven of Matthews; a daughter, JoAnn Craven McDonald of Newport News, Va.; a brother, Newton Lewis of High Point; six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
Funeral will be 4 p.m. Sunday at Bensalem Presbyterian Church, where she was a member, with the Rev. Tom Williams and the Rev. Darrell Garner officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Visitation will be 6:30-8:30 tonight at Kennedy Funeral Home in Robbins and other times at the home.

Victor Murphy
Thomasville - Victor Ray “Dick” Murphy, 71, of 2912 U.S. Highway 109 North died April 21, 2000, at his residence.
He was born March 26, 1929, in Davidson County, a son of Grant and Audrey Murphy and later became the foster son of Shelley and Mildred Murphy.
He was a lifetime farmer and retired from H.B. Plycurves. He was a former member of the Hasty Fire Department and a member of Mt. Pleasant United Methodist Church.
Surviving are his wife of 50 years, Mrs. Kathleen Jarrett Murphy of the home; three sons, Victor Dean Murphy and wife, Karen, Danny Ray Murphy and wife, Melissa, and David Watford Murphy and wife, Lori, all of Thomasville; four sisters, Mrs. Gerald (Mary Frances) Cotes, Mrs. Troy (Doris) Curry, Juanita Murphy, all of Thomasville, and Mrs. Henry (Lutricia) Darr of Trinity; two grandchildren, Jason Dean Murphy and Charles Dillion Murphy; three step-grandchildren, Cody Lee Tilley, David Turner and Stephanie Turner; foster children, Mrs. Reggie (Tammy) Cecil, Mrs. James (Sandra) Mullies and Mr. Jimmy Benfield.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Faye Leonard, and a brother, H.G. Murphy Jr.
Graveside service will be 4 p.m. Sunday in Mt. Pleasant United Methodist Church Cemetery with the Rev. Ardis Payne officiating. Visitation will be 7-9 tonight at J.C. Green and Sons Funeral Home.

Greensboro - Mrs. Ruth Elilzabeth Pickens Sapp, 92, died April 20, 2000.

Salisbury - Joel Worth Sexton Sr., 83, died April 20, 2000.

C. Swicegood
Thomasville - Clarence Edward Swicegood, 78, of 1028 Pauls Airport Road died 4 a.m. April 21, 2000, at Community General Hospital.
He was born Dec. 21, 1921, in Thomasville, a son of Ralph J. and Molly Myers Swicegood. He was a lifelong resident of Davidson County.
He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II and served in the South Pacific. For 30 years, he was employed with Thomasville Furniture Industries, Plant V. After retiring, he worked part time at Winn Dixie.
He was a member of Liberty Baptist Church, a past Sunday School and Training Union director and a trustee on the Building Committee. He was a coteacher of the Ben May Sunday School Class, a Deacon, an Usher and a member of the Senior Citizens.
On Feb. 27, 1948, he was married to Miss Ruth Kennedy, who survives of the home.
Also surviving are a daughter, Mrs. Tim (Wanda) Myers of Denton; two sisters, Mrs. Beulah McCarn of Thomasville and Mrs. Geraldine Byrd of Asheboro; three nieces; three great-nieces and two great-nephews.
Funeral will be 4 p.m. at Liberty Baptist Church by Dr. Peter Hamilton and the Rev. David Jones. Burial will be in the church cemetery. The body will remain at J.C. Green & Sons Funeral Home until placed in the church 30 minutes before the service. Visitation will be 7-9 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home and other times at the residence.

High Point - Mrs. Mary Johnson Byrd, 74, of 1609 Fowler St. died April 26, 2000, at High Point Regional Hospital.

William Dockery Jr.
High Point - William Dockery Jr., 68, of 1731 Cedrow Drive died April 26, 2000, at the Veteran’s Administration Hospital in Durham.
He was born Aug. 21, 1931, in Gilead, a son of William and Minnie G. Legrande, who both preceded him in death. He retired from Davis Furniture Industries and was a member of Chestnut AME Zion at Mt. Gilead. He was a U.S. Army veteran, having served in the Korean War. He also was preceded in death by his brother, Cornell Dockery, and his sister, Essie Harrington.
Surviving are his wife, Lucille Williams Dockery; a son, William R. Dockery and his wife, Kelsie; a daughter, Dwana Dockery of the residence; two brothers, Walter Dockery and Leon Dockery; two sisters, Maxine McRae and Arsie Stanback; two grandchildren, La Tonya Wright and her husband, Fred Jr., and Stephanie Dockery; an aunt, Estella Legrande of Mt. Gilead; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. Sunday at Friendship Missionary Baptist Church by the Rev. J.W. Flake. Burial will be in Guilford Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be 1:30 to 2 p.m. Sunday at the church and other times at the residence.

Denton - Miss Jennifer Marie Rocchi, 17, died April 27, 2000.

Ruth Rumrell
High Point - Mrs. Ruth Summey Rumrell, 72, of 714 Summey Ave. died April 27, 2000, at Oakhurst Rest Home in Greensboro following several months of declining health.
She was born July 10, 1927, in High Point, a daughter of Leroy and Jessie Lance Summey. She was a resident of High Point, most of her life. She was a graduate of Wake Forest School of Nursing and retired from Pinewest OB-GYN Inc. She was a member of Garrell Street Baptist Church. On Feb. 8, 1971, she married David Merton Rumrell, who preceded her in death June 4, 1997.
Surviving are a daughter, Mrs. Charles (Carol) Sedoris of 3373 Meadowlark Lane, Sophia; a brother, Marvin Leroy Summey of Ocala, Fla.; two sisters, Mrs. William (Edith) Lakin and Mrs. Margaret Bennison, both of Talbot, Tenn.; three grandchildren, Heather Holder, Carla Sedoris and Charles Sedoris Jr.; and four great-grandchildren.
Memorial service will be 3:30 p.m. Saturday at the chapel of Cumby Family Funeral Service, Archdale, by the Rev. Lloyd Roberts. Burial will be in Bushnell National Cemetery in Bushnell, Fla., at a later date. Visitation will be 7-8:30 tonight at the funeral home and other times at 714 Summey Ave.

High Point - Mrs. Edna Fields Staley, 84, of Evergreens Nursing Center Inc. died April 27, 2000.
