Harry Knight Jr.
High Point - Harry Albert Knight Jr., 83, died May 17, 2000, at his residence.
He was born July 28, 1916, in Henry County, Va., a son of Harry Albert Sr., and Tamsey Stultz Wall Knight, who both preceded him in death. He was a member of First Baptist Church. He was retired as environmental engineer of the Bahnson Co., and a former employee of the High Point Enterprise, where he delivered papers for 11 years. He married Dorothey Knight, who preceded him in death Nov. 11, 1973.
Surviving are four daughters, Tami Starkweather and her husband, Rodney, of High Point, Rhonda Glisson of Greensboro, Judy Cook and her husband, Tim, of Wilmington and Becki Turner of Stuart, Va.; 12 grandchildren, Ashley Cain, Joshua Kidd, Sarah and Casey Starkweather, Debi Claycomb, John Deal, Melissa Cox, Angel Dalton, Susan Funke, Rebecca Williams, David and Craig Glisson; and 17 great-granddchildren.
Memorial service will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Montlieu United Methodist Church by the Rev. Nathan Snider. Visitation will be 10:30-11 a.m. Saturday in the church parlor.
Memorials may be directed to Hospice of Davidson County, 524 S. State St., Lexington, N.C. 27292.
Foster Funeral Home, Winston-Salem, is in charge of arrangements.

Jeffie Lanning
Linwood - Jeffie Odell Lanning, 81, of 598 Wilson Road, died May 17, 2000.
Funeral will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Timberlake Chapel at Piedmont Funeral Home. Visitation will be 6:30-8:30 tonight at the funeral home.

Rev. Paul Nix
Wilmington - The Rev. Paul Clifford Nix died May 16, 2000, at High Point Regional Hospital.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Seagate Baptist Church. Visitation will be 7-8 tonight at Andrews Mortuary Market Street Chapel.

Carl Owens
Lexington - Carl Berrier Owens, 64, of Ed Byerly Road died May 17, 2000, at his residence after one year of declining health.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Mt. Carmel Freewill Baptist Church. Visitation will be 6:30 to 8:30 tonight at Davidson Funeral Home.

Michael Ridge
Thomasville - Michael Dean Ridge, 37, of 220 Harmon Drive died May 17, 2000, at his residence.
He was born May 31, 1962, in Thomasville, a son of Larry Dean and Barbara Brown Ridge. He was a lifelong resident of Thomasville. He was a U.S. National Guard veteran and attended Charity Baptist Church.
Surviving are his father of Archdale; his mother of Thomasville; a brother, Kenneth Ridge of Thomasville; his grandmother, Louise Brown of Thomasville; three best friends, Wayne Atwood, Karen Atwood and Andrew Atwood; and many aunts, uncles and cousins.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. Saturday at the chapel of Cumby Family Funeral Service, Archdale, by the Rev. Elton Wilborne and the Rev. Jamie Jonston III. Burial will be in Holly Hill Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be 7-9 tonight at the funeral home and at other times at the residence.
Pallbearers will be Rusty Parham, Billy Parham, Shane Saintsing, Sean Delgado, Gary Lawson and Scott Embry.

Bernard Simpson
Sparta - Bernard 'Green' Lee Simpson, 87, of 229 S. Main St., died May 18, 2000, at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home in Winston-Salem.
He was born March 9, 1913, in Stokes County, a son of James Lee and Addie Peake Simpson, who preceded him in death. On Oct. 12, 1935, he married Bertie Marie Hiatt and was later solemnized in the Logan Utah Latter-Day Saints Temple. He retired from Newman Machine Shop in Greensboro and was a high priest in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, with many years of loving service to church, family and friends. He was preceded in death by his wife, June 9, 1988, and two sons, Richard James Simpson and Kenneth Wayne Simpson.
Surviving are five daughters, Mrs. Sylvia Jean Chesson of Nashville, Mrs. John (Bonnie Gwyn) Martin of Greensboro, Mrs. Kent (Iris Marie) Lott, Mrs. William D. (Mary Lee) Swensen, Mrs. Esther Jacqueline Morehead, all of Salt lake City, Utah; a daughter-in-law, Jan Smith Simpson of Sparta; two sisters, Helen Stockton and Doris Simpson, both of Kernersville; 16 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; and two stepgreat-grandchildren.
Funeral will be 11 a.m. Saturday at the chapel of Cumby Family Funeral Service, High Point. Burial will be in Oakwood Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be 7-8:30 tonight at the funeral home and other times at 4906 Donvic Drive, Greensboro.

Holland Sloop
High Point - Holland Eugene Sloop, 88, of 1504 Conventry Road died May 17, 2000, at High Point Regional Hospital.
He was born Jan. 7, 1912, in High Point, a son of James Alvin and Loudema Daniels Sloop, who preceded him in death. He joined the High Point Fire Department in 1939 and retired with the rank of captain in 1971. He founded Sloop Fire Extinguisher Co. in 1950 and retired in 1978. He was a Mason and a devoted lifelong member of Emmanuel Lutheran Church and a member of the Men's Bible Class. He married the former Eva Davis, also who preceded him in death in 1981. He later married the former Leona Hill Ritchie, who survives of the residence. He also was preceded in death by two sisters, Ruth Sloop Atkins and Frances Sloop Hearne and a brother, Kermit B. Sloop.
Also surviving are two sons, Larry Eugene Sloop and his wife, Mary Lynn, of Winston-Salem and Ronald Kent Sloop and his wife, Pam, of High Point; a stepson, Church Ritchie and his wife, Tully, of High Point; seven grandchildren, Wendy Jordan and her husband, Jeff, of The Woodlands, Texas, Kevin Eugene Sloop and his wife, Sherry, of Longwood Fla., Kim Mathai and her husband, Michael, of High Point, Dr. Sue Sloop of Atlanta, Robert Holland Sloop and Jacob Davis Sloop, both of High Point and Mark Ritchie and his wife, Traci, of Greensboro; seven great-grandchildren; a brother, James R. Sloop and his wife, Helen, of High Point; three sisters, Louella Wagner and her husband, Harry and Dolly Morgan and her husband, Roger, all of High Point, and Edna Echols of Archdale.
Memorial service will be 2 p.m. Sunday at Emmanuel Lutheran Church by the Rev. John L. Petry III. Visitation will be Sunday after the memorial service at the church.
Memorials may be directed to the Compassion Fund or the Music Fund of Emmanuel Lutheran Church, 1401 Heathcliff Road, High Point, N.C. 27262.
Cumby Family Funeral Service, High Point, is in charge of arrangements.

Callie Staples
High Point - Mrs. Callie Ramsey Staples, 97, of 510 Player Drive died May 18, 2000, at High Point Regional Hospital.
She was born March 29, 1903, in Bluefield, W.VA., a daughter of James Marshall and Nancy Spencer Ramsey, who preceded her in death. She was a resident of High Point for the last 15 years and prior to that she lived in Basset, Va. She was a member of Full Gospel Revival Center. She married the Rev. Arthur Abe Staples, who preceded her in death in 1986. She also was preceded in death by a daughter, Barbara Smith; six brothers; and two sisters.
Surviving are three sons, Wesley Staples of Alabama, Lesley Staples of Ridgeway, Va., and Jimmy Staples of Mayodan; five daughters, Nancy Godwin of High Point, Mary Stone of Newport, Va., Juanita Rollins of Archdale, Doris Hall of Statesville and Ellen Murphy of Bassett, Va.; 38 grandchildren; 81 great-grandchildren; 18 great-great-grandchildren; two brothers, Raymond Ramsey and Daniel Ramsey, both of Henry, Va.; and a sister, Aileen Odell of Bassett, Va.
Funeral will be 1:30 p.m. Saturday at Full Gospel Revival Center by the Rev. Stanley Savage and the Rev. Richard Wilson. Burial will be in Clearview Baptist Church Cemetery in Mayodan. Visitation will be 7-9 tonight at Cumby Family Funeral Service, Archdale.

Wesley Thompson
Lexington - Wesley Dakota Thompson, infant son of James Wesley Thompson and Natalie Suzanne Beard, died May 16, 2000, at High Point Regional Hospital.
Surviving are the parents; maternal grandparents, Rebecca and Gary Staley of Lexington, James Allen Beard of Winnemucca, Nev.; stepgrandmother, Mrs. Bennie Beard of Trinity; great-grandmother, Mrs. Ruth Elizabeth Beard of Forest City; paternal grandparents, Deborah Thompson of Lexington, James Thompson Jr. of Florida; and great-grandparents, Ray and Ruth Gentry of Lexington and Wanda Thompson of Welcome.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. Saturday at J.C. Green & Sons Chapel by the Rev. Tony Horne. Burial will be in Holly Hill Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be 7-9 tonight at the funeral home and at other times at the residence of the grandparents, Rebecca and Gary Staley, 781 Embler Road, Lexington.

Kathryn Bigger
High Point - Mrs. Kathryn Owens Bigger, affectionately known to many as 'Aunt Kitty,' departed this life in her sleep, May 16, 2000, at High Point Regional Hospital.
She was born July 31, 1908, in High Point, a daughter of Lee Washington Owens and Sarah Bell Graves, who both preceded her in death. She graduated from High Point Normal High School and from Shaw University in Raleigh. She married James 'Eddie' Bigger, who also preceded her in death.
She was employed in Bronx, N.Y., at Lord & Taylor Department Store for more than 40 years. She returned to High Point to be with her sisters and family several years after her retirement. She was a school bus monitor for Guilford County Schools. She was a lifelong devoted and dedicated member of First Baptist Church.
She leaves to mourn her memories two sisters, of the residence, Ms. Laura and Ms. Alyne Owens; a niece, Mrs. Beverly Boyd of High Point; two nephews, Thomas (Delcenia) E. Bell Sr. of Oxon Hill, Md., and Daniel (Nellie) C. Bell Jr. of High Point; two great-nieces who stood by her throughout her illness, Pamela S. Gill of High Point and Michelle Alston of Greensboro; and a host of great-nieces, great-nephews, other relatives and friends.
Funeral will be 3 p.m. Sunday at First Baptist Church, E. Washington Drive. Burial will be in Greenhill Cemetery. Visitation will be 2:30 p.m. Sunday at the church and other times at the residence, 328 Fourth St.

Ada Clark
Thomasville - Mrs. Ada Jackson Clark, 85, died May 17, 2000, at Brian Center Nursing Care in Lexington.
Funeral will be 5:30 p.m. Sunday at Brown New Calvary Baptist Church. Visitation will be 30 minutes prior to the service at the church Sunday.
S.E. Thomas Funeral Services is in charge of arrangements.

William Hunsucker
Trinity - William M. Hunsucker, 69, of 6600 Abigail Drive died May 18, 2000, at High Point Regional Hospital.
He was born Oct. 1, 1930, in Guilford County, a son of Mahlon and Bessie Stack Hunsucker. He was a lifelong resident of High Point and Trinity. He was a U.S. Army veteran and was a paint contractor. He was of the Baptist faith. On Feb. 23, 1961, he married the former Norma Hurley, who survives of the residence.
Also surviving are a daughter, Ann Koonts and her husband, Charlie, of Trinity; a son, Gene Hunsucker of Randleman; three grandchildren, Lisa Damron, Kimberly Hunsucker and Scott Hunsucker; two great-grandchildren, Hope and Allie Damron; and a sister, Ruby Hunt of Clemmons.
Funeral will 2 p.m. Sunday at the chapel of Cumby Family Funeral Service, Archdale, by the Rev. Riley Puckett. Burial will be in Floral Garden Park Cemetery. Visitation will be 7-8:30 tonight at the funeral home.

Cora Jefferson
Thomasville - Mrs. Cora Lee Mabe Jefferson, 90, of 1055 Johnsontown Road died May 18, 2000, at Sun Coast Hospital in Largo, Fla.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. Monday at Gospel Light Freewill Baptist Church. Visitation will be 7-9 p.m. Sunday at J.C. Green & Sons Funeral Home.

Inez Luther
Thomasville - Mrs. Inez Clinard Luther, 80, of 206 Long St. died May 18, 2000, at her residence.
Funeral will be 11 a.m. Monday at J.C. Green & Sons Chapel. Visitation will be 9:30 a.m. until the hour of service Monday.
