Winston-Salem - Mrs. Kathryn Sexton Griffis Foy, 83, died May 25, 2000, at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home in Winston-Salem.
She was born Dec. 8, 1916, in Davidson County, a daughter of Shuford Hayden and Gertha Wooley Sexton. She married Dr. John William Griffis Sr., who preceded her in death. She later married John Clay Foy Sr., who also preceded her in death. She also was preceded in death by a daughter, Kathryn Burke Griffis.
Surviving are two sons, John William Griffis Jr. of Winston-Salem and the Rev. Thomas Lionel Griffis and his wife, Susan Gadd, of Salisbury; a daughter, Anne Griffis Wilson and her husband, the Rev. Charles Francis Wilson, of Winston-Salem; four grandchildren, John Charles Burks Wilson and Thomas Gregory Wilson of Winston-Salem, Emma Kathryn Griffis and Anna Burks Griffis of Salisbury; three stepchildren, John Clay Foy Jr. and his wife, Hilda McKnight, of Arapahoe, Carolyn Foy Ragsdale and her husband, James Edmonds, of Smithfield and Henry Gratton Foy and his wife, Patricia Armstrong, of Southport; and seven stepgrandchildren.
Funeral will be 3 p.m. Sunday at Centenary United Methodist Church by the Rev. Roland Barnhardt. Burial will be in Denton Town Cemetery, Denton. Visitation will be after the service Sunday at Memorial Auditorium.

Horace Jarrell
Thomasville - Horace Leon Jarrell, 75, of 406 Liberty Drive died May 25, 2000, at High Point Regional Hospital.
He was born Feb. 11, 1925, in High Point, a son of Bascom Eli and Bessie Rebecca Smith Jarrell. He retired from Adams-Millis Inc. of High Point. He was a member of Carolina Memorial Baptist Church. On Jan. 21, 1949, he married Betty Gillespie, who survives of the residence.
Also surviving are a daughter, Gail Jarrell Huneycutt of Thomasville; a son, H. Leon Jarrell II and his wife, Susan, of Trinity; and a sister, Mrs. Seibert (Ruth) Lockman of Lincolnton.
Funeral will be 4:30 p.m. Sunday at J.C. Green & Sons Chapel by the Rev. Stuart White. Burial will be in Holly Hill Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be 3:30-4:30 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home and other times at the residence.

Kernersville - Mrs. Louise J. Schlotfeldt, 68, died May 26, 2000, at Forsyth Medical Center.
She was born Aug. 26, 1931, in Forsyth County, a daughter of Elbert Lee and Claudia Glidewell Joyce. She was a member of Abbotts Creek Missionary Baptist Church, where she was a member of the Philathea Sunday School Class. On May 20, 1965, she married Orville 'Oz' Schlotfeldt, who preceded her in death. She also was preceded in death by a grandson, Chris Schlotfeldt; a great-granddaughter, Megan Easter; a sister; and five brothers.
Surviving are two sons, Albert 'Junior' Sink and his wife, Becky, of High Point and Dennis Paul Sink and his wife, Audrey, of Winston-Salem; a stepson, Alan Lee 'Butch' Schlotfeldt and his wife, Margaret, of King; eight grandchildren, Amy Sink, Molly Sink, Todd Sink, Travis Sink, Cindy Tilley and her husband, Tab, Tony Newsome, Genny Adkins and her husband, Jamey, and Max Brock; two great-grandchildren, Candace Easter and Brianna McCoy; five sisters, Emma Witcher, Iris Beeson, Mary Moore, Francis Lemar and Garline Cole; four brothers, David Joyce, Bill Joyce, Mike Joyce and Wade Joyce; and a host of special nieces, nephews and great-nieces and nephews.
Funeral will be 3 p.m. Sunday at Abbotts Creek Missionary Baptist Church by the Rev. Roy Cantrell, the Rev. Lee Stocks and the Rev. Jack Rose. Burial will be in the church cemetery. The body will be placed in the church 30 minutes prior to the service. Visitation will be 7-9 tonight at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel and other times at the residence.

High Point - Carl Edward Smith, 44, of 410 Greer Ave. died May 25, 2000, at High Point Regional Hospital.

James Carr Jr.
RALEIGH - James Osborn Carr Jr., 57, died May 28, 2000, at Rex Hospital.
He was born in Wallace, a son of James Osborn and Hazel McLauchlin Carr, who preceded him in death. He was a 1960 graduate of Wallace-Rose Hill High School. He was a copy editor for The News and Observer. For 25 seasons he traveled to Wallace on Friday nights to serve as public address announcer at Bulldog football games.
He attended the School of Journalism at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and held a degree in political science from the University of North Carolina at Wilmington. His career included services as an editor or reporter at Wallace Enterprise, Wilson Daily Times, Durham Morning Herald, Fayetteville Observer, Smithfield Herald and the Associated Press. He also served as director of information services at UNC at Wilmington and as public relations director for Optimist International in St. Louis.
He was a member of Asbury United Methodist Church in Raleigh, where he served as an usher. He was a veteran of the North Carolina Army National Guard. He was preceded in death by a brother-in-law, Thomas Hennessee.
Surviving are a sister, Carole Carr Hennessee of Cheraw, S.C.; a brother and sister-in-law, Donald and Judy Carr of High Point; and a host of nieces and nephews.
Funeral will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Asbury United Methodist Church by the Rev. Marshall Old. Graveside service will be 3 p.m. Thursday in Rockfish Cemetery at Wallace. Visitation will be 7-9 p.m. Wednesday at Mitchell Funeral Home, 7209 Glenwood Ave.

Annie Donald
HIGH POINT - Mrs. Annie Groome Donald, 96, of Maryfield Nursing Home died Saturday, May 27, 2000, at the home.
She was born Jan. 19, 1904, in Groometown, a daughter of Zachariah L. and Minnie Armfield Groome. She graduated from Greensboro College with a degree in science and mathematics. She was a laboratory technician at Trinity College (Duke University). She later taught chemistry and math in the Greensboro school system for more than 35 years. She was a native of Guilford County and a former member of Groometown United Methodist Church. She later was a member West Market St. United Methodist Church, Greensboro.
Prior to moving to High Point, she resided at 1803 Madison Ave., Greensboro. In 1924, she married William Blanton Donald of Richmond, Va., who preceded her in death Aug. 20, 1966. She was preceded in death by two sisters, Mrs.. Jessie Phillips and Mrs. Nell Cline; and five brothers, Percy Groome, Dr. Jim Groome, Wilbur Groome, Houston Groome and Charles Groome.
Surviving are a daughter, Mrs. Harold L. (Peggy) Amos of 1004 Country Club Drive; a son, Dr. William Blanton Donald Jr. and his wife, Mona, of 815 Hillcrest Drive; five grandchildren, Mrs. Ronald Shealy, Mrs. Maurice Scott Smothers Hull, Harold Lindsay Amos Jr., Mrs. Ray Barbour Jr. and Mrs. James Buckthal; 12 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Mrs. Charles (Mary Ruth) Coble of Burlington and Mrs. Stanley (Jane) Lowe of Cleveland, Tenn.; and a brother, A. Bryan Groome and his wife, Helen, of Groometown.
Graveside service will be 11 a.m. Thursday in Groometown United Methodist Church Cemetery by the Rev. Charles Morton. The body will be at Sechrest Funeral Home, High Point, until the hour of service.

Nonnie Hauser
HIGH POINT - Mrs. Nonnie Elizabeth Pulliam Hauser, 94, died May 29, 2000, at Wesleyan Arms Nursing Center.
She was born July 26, 1905, in Stokes County, a daughter of William Thomas and Emma Rierson Watts Pulliam. She was previously employed with Lyon Agency and was a member of Friendly Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Solomon W. 'Sox' Hauser in 1969.
Surviving are two sons, Marion Thomas 'Tom' Hauser Sr. and his wife, Jerry, of Pfafftown, and Charles L. Hauser and his wife, Goldia, of Kernersville; two sisters, Mrs. Ruby Armfield and Mrs. Irene Rush, both of High Point; six grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and one great-great-granddaughter.
Graveside service will be 1 p.m. Wednesday in Guilford Memorial Park Cemetery by the Rev. Melvin B. Anderson. Visitation will be 7-8:30 tonight at Sechrest Funeral Service, High Point.

Elizabeth Hoover
TRINITY - Mrs. Elizabeth Evans 'Lib' Hoover, 83, formerly of 6800 Harlow Drive, died Sunday, May 28, 2000, at Graybrier Nursing Home, after declining health of three years and being seriously ill for four days.
She was born Feb. 13, 1917, in High Point, a daughter of Wiley Harris and Lula Bennett Evans. She was a graduate and veledictorian of Allen Jay High School in 1934. She was a homemaker the majority of her life. She was a member of Fairfield United Methodist Church and a member of the Christian Fellowship Sunday School Class. On July 27, 1936, she married Harold McGee Hoover, who prececed her in death June 7, 1982. She also was preceded in death by a brother, Wiley Harris Evans, Jr.
Surviving are three sons, Harold M. Hoover and his wife, Peggy, of Walkertown, L. Joseph 'Joe' Hoover and his wife, Sharon, of High Point and Ronald A. 'Ron' Hoover and his wife, Barbara, of Archdale; four grandchildren, Sharon Jones of Archdale, Billy Hoover of Walkertown, Doug Hoover of Lexington and Misty Hoover of Charlotte; three great-grandchidlren; four sisters, Margaret Harris of Richmond, Va., Marie Dorsett of Amelia, Va., Annie Hall of City of Industry, Calif., and Fannie Bryant of Draper, Utah; and a brother, Joe Evans of Richmond, Va.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at Fairfield United Methodist Church by the Rev. Neil Brower. Burial will be in the church cemetery. The body will be at Cumby Family Funeral Service, Archdale, until placed in the church 30 minutes prior to the service. Visitation will be 7-8:30 tonight at the funeral home and othert times at the residence of Joe Hoover, 6955 Harlow Drive.

Betty Hughe
HIGH POINT - Mrs. Betty Billings Hughes, 63, of 7850-A Clinard Farms died Sunday, May 28, 2000, at High Point Regional Hospital.
She was born Sept. 5, 1936, in Wilkes County and was a resident of High Point the majority of her life. She was a homemaker and attended Parkwood Baptist Church. She married Burnes J. Hughes Jr., who survives of the residence.
Also surviving are two daughters, Donna Hughes Aker and Sandra Clark, both of High Point; two sons, Fredrick C. Hughes of Thomasville and Clyde Billings of Archdale; six grandchildren, Katie Billings, Casey Jarrell, Derek Clark, Drew Belcher, Brandon and Jonathan Aker; a great-grandson, Christopher Haney; a brother, Frank Thomas of High Point; and a sister, Alice Quaintance of High Point.
Funeral will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at the chapel of Cumby Family Funeral Service, High Point, by the Rev. B.R. Hiatt. Visitation will be 7-8:30 tonight at the funeral home.
Richard Snyder
ARCHDALE - Richard Edward Snyder, 71, of 1403 Kersey Valley Road died Sunday, May 28, 2000, at High Point Regional Hospital after a brief illness.
He was born Nov. 9, 1928, in Randolph County, a son of Ed Lindsay and Bess Morgan Snyder, who both preceded him in death. On July 1, 1959, he married Jacquelyn Young, who preceded him in death Nov. 7, 1998.
He was in the U.S. Merchant Marines and also the U.S. Army, having served during the Korean Conflict. He received the National Defense Service Medal while serving in the U.S. Army. He retired from Wausau Insurance Co. in 1990 after a successful sales career.
He was a lifelong member of Archdale United Methodist Church and a member of the Friendship Class. He was a honorary member of the Lieutenant Governor's Staff in the state of Tennessee and a member of the North Carolina Walking Horse Association. He was an avid card player and horse enthusiast. He was known for his sense of humor and straightforward manner. He was a wonderful father, provider and friend. He was a remarkable man, who will be sadly missed.
Surviving are three daughters, Sue (Brian) Howard of High Point, Vicki (Keith) Bean of Wallburg and Diana Richard Snyder of Greensboro; four granddaughters, Mary Jacquelyn (Lynn) Turner of Greensboro and Laura Bean, Sarah Bean and Mary Katherine Bean, all of Wallburg; two brothers, Don Snyder of Cummings, Ga., and Charles Snyder of College Grove, Tenn.; and two sisters, Evelyn Travis of Slidell, La., and Janet Dugger of High Point.
Funeral will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at the chapel of Cumby Family Funeral Service, High Point, by the Rev. Jeff S. Patterson and the Rev. Harold D. Shives. Burial will be in Floral Garden Park Cemetery. Visitation will be 7-8:30 tonight at the funeral home.

Janie Templeton
BOONE - Mrs. Janie Collins Templeton, 44, died May 28, 2000, at Watauga Medical Center in Boone.
She was born March 16, 1956, in Jamestown, Guilford County, a daughter of Wesley and Joy Dearmin Collins. In 1974 she graduated from North State Academy, Hickory and in 1978 graduated from Hollins College, Roanoke, Va. She was a member of First Presbyterian Church and also a preschool teacher of the First Morning Out Program. She was a charter member of the Boone Service League. She was preceded in death by her paternal grandparents, Ernest and Lola Collins and maternal grandparents, Pickney and Topsia Moorefield Dearmin.
Surviving are her husband, Thomas W. Templeton; two sons, Patrick Templeton and Wesley Templeton, both of the residence; a daughter, Elizabeth Templeton of the residence; her father and mother of Lenoir; two brothers, Samuel Collins of Lenoir and Wesley E. Collins Jr. and his wife, Anita, of Roswell, Ga.; a niece and two nephews.
Memorial service will be 7 p.m. Wednesday at First Presbyterian Church by the Rev. Ronald L. Bowie. Visitation will be after the service at the church.

HIGH POINT - Mrs. Ellen Shelton Venable, 90, of 2100 Guyer Street died May 28, 2000, at Wesleyan Arms Nursing Home.
She was born Jan. 29, 1910, in Surry County, a daughter of James Madison and Sarah Vernon Shelton. She was a resident of High Point the majority of her life. She was a member of First Wesleyan Church and a member of the Willing Workers Sunday School Class. She worked at Penny Wood Turning and also at Maryfield Nursing Home. She married Edgar Marvin Venable, who preceded her in death in 1970.
Surviving are a daughter, Mrs. U.F. Cavaletto of Seagrove; a son, Edgar 'Jack' Venable and his wife, Mary Katherine, of High Point; seven grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. today at the chapel of Cumby Family Funeral Service, High Point, by the Rev. James Smith. Burial will be in Floral Garden Park Cemetery.
