John Marsh Jr.
High Point - John Arthur Marsh Jr., 83, of the Presbyterian Home, Apt. 85, died Oct. 9, 1999, in High Point Regional Hospital.
He was born April 10, 1916, in High Point a son of John Arthur and Lucy Covington Marsh and had lived here all his life. He was educated in High Point city schools and graduated from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1937 with a degree in electrical engineering and where he was a member of Alpha Tau Omega fraternity. He traveled for a furniture company in High Point prior to entering the U.S. Navy in 1940. He completed aviation training in Pensacola, Fla., was a flight pilot instructor in Jacksonville, Fla., and in 1943, he had sea duty aboard the carrier USS Yorktown. He was a in Torpedo Squadron 5 and was with the First Air Group aboard the Yorktown. He served in the Pacific Theater as a lieutenant commander and received the Distinguished Flying Cross and six air medals. From 1946 to 1948, he was air group commander of the Reserve Group CVEG-60 Naval Air Reserve Training Unit, Norfolk, Va. He was a partner in the firm of Marsh-Armfield Inc. of High Point and Conover. He served on the board of directors of United Way where he was co-chairman of the United Way primary gifts. He was a member of the Boy Scout Committee and institutional representative to the District Uwharrie Council Troop 7. He was a member and treasurer of Crimestoppers and a member of several aviation organizations and past president of the Sportsman Pilots Association. He was vice president of the board emeritus of the Yorktown Association. He was a member of St. Mary’s Episcopal Church and a former vestryman.
Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Pearl Thompson Marsh of the home; one daughter, Mrs. Price Marsh Thrower and son-in-law, William Thrower Jr. of Gastonia; a son, Arthur Marsh III of High Point; four grandchildren, Mary Marsh Thrower, John William Thrower, John Arthur Marsh IV and Laura Covington Marsh; and a sister, Mrs. Helen Marsh Cranford of Durham.
A memorial service will be 3 p.m. Tuesday in St. Mary’s Episcopal Church by Dr. Glen Busch. Inurment will be in the church columbarium. Visitation will be immediately following the service. Mary Passmore
Trinity - Mrs. Mary Marie Frazier Passmore, 75, of 4113 Sherwood Forest Drive died Oct. 10, 1999, at High Point Regional Hospital.
She was born Feb. 20, 1924, in Macon County a daughter of Wade and Hattie Bingham Frazier. She had attended New Heights Baptist Church. On May 23, 1938, she married Fred Henry Passmore, who survives of the home.
Also surviving are five daughters, Ms. Doris Cattell of 4093 Sherwood Drive, Mrs. Charles (Alice) Saintsing of 5849 Midway School Road, Thomasville, Mrs. John T. (Joyce) Jones of 6163 Unity St., Thomasville, Mrs. John (Betty) Brinkley of 324 Gregg St., Archdale, and Miss Shirley Irene Passmore of the home; two sons, Doyle H. Passmore of California and James M. Passmore of 442 Cabin Creek Road, Denton; two sisters, Mrs. Bessie Stockton of Franklin and Mrs. Irene Williamson of Burlington, Wash.; 16 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at Family Funeral Care Chapel by the Rev. Roger Porter. Burial will be in Holly Hill Memorial Park. The body will be at the funeral home, 18 Randolph Street, Thomasville, where visitation will be 7-9 tonight and at other times at the home of a daughter, Doris Cattell. Bernice Byrd
Jamestown - Ms. Bernice H. “Tomboy” Byrd, 78, died Oct. 11, 1999, at her son’s home in Jamestown.
Arrangements are incomplete at Hanes-Lineberry Sedgefield Chapel in Greensboro.
Madge Frazier
High Point - Mrs. Madge Smith Frazier, 94, formerly of High Point, died Oct. 11, 1999, at Britthaven of Guilford.
She was born March 11, 1905, in Guilford County, a daughter of Robert Alfred and Mary Lou Wood Smith. She graduated from the Burris Memorial Hospital School of Nursing. She was employed as a nurse and retired from High Point Memorial Hospital after 42 years of service. She was a member of Oakview United Methodist Church and the Sunday school. On Dec. 13, 1936, she married Eugene A. Frazier, who preceded her in death.
Surviving are one brother, Hase H. Smith and his wife, Lena Maie, of Greensboro; one sister-in-law, Mrs. Evelyn Rodgers Smith of Newton; one niece; and two nephews.
Graveside service will be 10 a.m. Wednesday in Guilford Memorial Park by the Rev. Sonny Reavis. Visitation will be 7-8 tonight at Sechrest Funeral Service, 1301 E. Lexington Ave.

Vernel Gannaway
Petersburg, Va. - Vernel A. Gannaway departed this life Oct. 5, 1999, at St. Mary’s Hospital in Richmond.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. today at Mt. Olivet Baptist Church. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at William N. Bland & Son Funeral Home.
James Humphreys
High Point - James “Jimmy” Lewis Humphreys, 38, of 180 South Road, Lot 25, died Oct. 9, 1999, at his residence.
He was born June 14, 1961, in Guilford County, a son of Robert Lewis and Carolyn Shermer Humphreys. He had been a lifelong resident of High Point and was a machine operator. He was of the Baptist faith and was preceded in death by his mother.
Surviving are one daughter, Kendal Paige Humphreys and a son, Christopher Lewis Humphreys, both of whom reside with their mother, Mrs. Deborah Stamey of Tyro; his father of Conover; one sister, Carol H. Marlowe of 180 South Road, Box 11; one brother, Robert Lynwood Humphreys of High Point; and his maternal grandmother, Mrs. Clara Shermer of Yadkinville.
Memorial services will be private. Visitation will be 7-8:30 tonight at Sechrest Funeral Service, E. Lexington Avenue.
Flowers will be accepted; however, the family requests potted plants or cut flowers.

Thomasville - Mrs. Nellie Frances Bevan Johnson, 74, of White Street died Oct. 10, 1999.

Claude Teer
High Point - Claude Raymond Teer, 87, formerly of 524 Barker Ave. died at 2:20 p.m. Oct. 11, 1999, at GrayBrier Nursing and Retirement Center.
He was born Aug. 27, 1912, in Guilford County, a son of Herbert Lamb and Francis Harris Teer. He had been a resident of High Point all of his life and was a retired owner and operator of a local restaurant. He was a member of Green Street Baptist Church and the Jesse Watson Sunday School Class. On July 3, 1930, he married Ruby Sparks, who preceded him in death Dec. 27, 1991.
Surviving are three sons, Herbert E. Teer of Jamestown, Donald R. Teer of Archdale and Phillip E. Teer of Greensboro; two sisters, Mrs. Frances Hundley and Mrs. Mary McDaniel, both of High Point; one brother, Edward M. “Joe” Teer of Thomasville; 17 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandson. He was preceded in death by a son, Joseph R. Teer and a brother, Robert L. Teer.
Funeral will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at the chapel of Green Street Baptist Church by the Rev. C.W. Moss. Burial will be in Floral Garden Park Cemetery. Visitation will be 7-8:30 tonight at Cumby Family Funeral Service in High Point.

Asheboro - Mrs. Thelma Keesee Browne, 87, of 105 Underwood St. died Oct. 11, 1999, at her residence.
She was a native of Altavista, Va., and a 50-year member of Balfour Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Chesley J. Browne.
Surviving are two sons, C.J. Browne of Yorktown, Va., and Barry Browne of Asheboro; two daughters, Drucilla Hudson and Connie Browne Edwards, both of High Point; a sister, Christine Cocke of Altavista; five grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
Funeral will be 11 a.m. Thursday at Balfour Baptist Church by Dr. John C. Noble and Dr. Bobby Blanton. Burial will be in Randolph Memorial Park. Visitation will be 7-9 tonight at Pugh Funeral Home.

Jamestown - Ms. Bernice H. “Tomboy” Byrd, 78, died Oct. 11, 1999, at her son’s residence in Jamestown.
A native of Guilford County, she was of the Presbyterian faith. She was preceded in death by her husband, James Monroe Byrd.
Surviving are two sons, Wesley Lee Phillips and his wife, Christine, of Jamestown and Charles Grady Phillips of High Point; two sisters, Katherine Hurley of Maryland and Bea Dillon of Greensboro; two grandsons, Robert Wesley Phillips and Paul Fletcher Phillips; one granddaughter, Carrie Gwen Phillips; three step-grandchildren, Mildred, Teresa and Diana; three great-grandchildren; and five step-great-grandchildren.

Thomasville - Vergial Lee Cook, 75, of Sunbridge Health Center, Lexington, formerly of 288 Sunset Lane died Oct. 11, 1999, at the nursing center.

Goldie Crawford
Thomasville - Mrs. Goldie Marie Pruitt Crawford, 72, of 10-E E. Sunrise Ave. died Oct. 12, 1999.
She was born Sept. 3, 1927, in Richland, Va., a daughter of Levi Thomas and Mary Powers Pruitt. She had lived most of her life in Pulaski, Va., and had been a resident of this area since 1995. She was very active as a hospital volunteer in Pulaski and also was a homemaker. She was a member of Dora Hyway Baptist Church in Pulaski. She was married to Everett Crawford, who preceded her in death April 30, 1991.
Surviving are a daughter, Mrs. Debra Bolling and her husband, Clark, of Lexington; a son, Charles Lee Crawford and his wife, Sharon, of Manassas, Va.; three sisters, Mrs. Ollie Trent and Mrs. Margie Martin, both of Thomasville, and Mrs. Kathryn Bird of High Point; a grandson, Charles Lee Crawford II; two step-grandchildren, Cindy Bolling and Josh Bolling; seven nieces; and two nephews.
Funeral will be 11 a.m. Thursday at J.C. Green & Sons Chapel by Bishop Jim Hassell and the Rev. Hulon Pait. Graveside service will be 3 p.m. Thursday in Highland Memory Gardens in Dublin, Va. Visitation will be 7-9 tonight at the funeral home and other times at the residence.
