Damon Styers
Lexington - Damon Lee Styers, 29, of Crestwood Circle died Oct. 12, 1999, at his residence.
Funeral will be 11 a.m. Friday at Davidson Funeral Home Chapel. Visitation will be 6:30-8:30 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.
Lou Wischum
High Point - Mrs. Lou Etta Swaney Wischum, 97, of 1110 Clyde Place, formerly of Wischum Way, Trinity, died Oct. 12, 1999, at High Point Regional Hospital.
She was born April 4, 1902, in Randolph County, a daughter of Claudius S. and Mary Ellen Lucas Swaney. She was a registered private duty nurse. She graduated from the Burris School of Nursing in High Point in 1926. A resident of Asheboro until 1947, she was a nurse at Randolph Hospital.
Later she moved to High Point and was a nurse at Burris and High Point Memorial hospitals. She was the founder, owner and operator of the Baby Land Nursery on W. Ray Avenue. She also was a member of the Rebakah Lodge, charter member of the Good Deed Club, Congeniality Club and the Nurses Association. She was a member of First United Methodist Church and the A.M. Idol Sunday School Class. She was married to Joseph William Wischum, who preceded her in death.
Surviving are one daughter, Mrs. Joanne W. Lea of 1110 Clyde Place; one sister, Mrs. Flossie Anderson of Richmond, Va.; four grandchildren, Gloria Kearns of Charlotte, Earl W. “Buddy” Kearns and his wife, Charly, of Walkertown, Kimberly Lea of High Point and Allison Myers and her husband, Marty, of High Point; one great-granddaughter, Elizabeth Myers; and close family friends, Tracee and Joshua Comer.
Funeral will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday at First United Methodist Church Chapel by the Rev. Don Lloyd and Dr. Richard J. Crowder. Burial will be in Floral Garden Park Cemetery. The body will be at Sechrest Funeral Home, E. Lexington Avenue, until placed in the chapel at 9:45 a.m. Thursday. Visitation will be 10-10:30 a.m. Thursday at the chapel.

Beauford Chester
Lexington - Beauford “B.A.” Avean Chester, 69, died Oct. 12, 1999.

James Ellington Jr.
Sunset Beach - James “Jim” Ellington Jr., 74, formerly of Greensboro, died Oct. 12, 1999, at Brunswick County Hospital in Supply.
He attended North Carolina State University and was a lifetime member of the Greensboro Elks Lodge #602. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II and a former member of Guilford College United Methodist Church. He was a loving husband, father and grandfather and will be greatly missed by all his family and friends.
Surviving are his wife of 50 years, Jeanette Ellington of the home; three sons, James “Trip” Ellington III of Greensboro, John Ellington and his wife, Erynn, of Morganton and Jason Ellington of Greensboro; his mother, Maude Ellington of High Point; a sister, Jamesanna Cook of Burlington; and two grandchildren, Benjamin Lee Ellington and Stephen James Ellington.
Graveside service will be 2 p.m. Friday in Westminster Gardens Cemetery by the Rev. Mark Vickers. Visitation will be 7-9 tonight at Forbis & Dick Guilford Chapel, W. Friendly Avenue, Greensboro.

Fannie Garris
Clemmons - Mrs. Fannie Lucille Garris, 73, of 8260 Lake Ridge Drive, formerly of Lexington, died Oct. 12, 1999, at Forsyth Memorial Hospital.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. Friday at J.C. Green & Sons Chapel in Thomasville. Visitation will be 7-9 tonight at the funeral home.
Antonina Gladky
High Point - Mrs. Antonina G. Gladky, 104, of 300 Edgedale Drive died Oct. 13, 1999, at High Point Regional Hospital.
She was born Feb. 23, 1895, in the Ukraine. She was a teacher of Russian and French and in 1923-24, she taught Nikita Khrushchev. During World War II, she was in the labor camps in Germany and later lived in Ventnor, Isle of White, England. In 1958, she immigrated with her husband to the United States and lived until 1988 in Manchester, Conn., where she taught languages in adult education. In 1988, she moved with her daughter and son-in-law to High Point. She was preceded in death by her husband, Orest M. Gladky and her son-in-law, Giulio Verro.
Surviving are one daughter, Mrs. Olga Verro of High Point; a grandson, Dr. Piero Verro of Edison, N.J.; a granddaughter, Mrs. Lia Zygmont of Thomasville; two great-granddaughters, Carla Zygmont of High Point and Mrs. Tanya Riddle of Lexington; and a great-great-grandson, Bryson Riddle of Lexington.
She bequeathed her body to Wake Forest University School of Medicine, Winston-Salem.

Lexington - Adam Lee Leonard, 81, of 1057 Lanier Road died Oct. 13, 1999.

James Little
High Point - James Bloise Little, 54, of 1725 Bolingbroke Road died Oct. 11, 1999, at his residence.
He was born March 29, 1945, in Richmond County, a son of Spurgeon Buck and Nancy Pemberton Little. He attended Mineral Spring High School in Ellerby. He was a mailbag repairer and worked for New Breed Leasing. He was previously manager and owner of T.J. Package for five years. He was a member of Calvary Baptist Church, where he was treasurer of ACED, sang in the men’s choir and was treasurer and a trustee of the church. He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Curtis Little.
Surviving are his wife, Ida Hough Little; two sons, Michael Eric (Amanda) Little and Anthony Lee (LaFonda) Hough; two brothers, Spurgeon (Evon) Little of Charlotte and Arthur S. Little of Mt. Gilead; four sisters, Linda (Roosevelt) Kinsler of High Point, Rebecca Kirby of Wadesboro, JoAnn (Roger) Turner of Mt. Gilead and Betty L. Little of Brooklyn, N.Y.; three grandchildren, Tekiera, Jarvis and Anthony; three uncles; one aunt; seven sisters-in-law; four brothers-in-law; two godchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews and other relatives.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Calvary Baptist Church by Dr. George A. Jones Jr. Burial will be in Carolina Biblical Gardens. Visitation will be 1:30-2 p.m. Saturday at the church and other times at the residence.

Frances Mercer
Norman, Okla. - Mrs. Frances Carleen Welch Mercer, 78, died Oct. 12, 1999, at Norman Regional Hospital.
She was born Aug. 5, 1921, in High Point, N.C, a daughter of William Corbett and Florence Millikan Welch. She was a graduate of High Point Central High School and Bryce Business College. She was a member of the National Secretaries Association and president of the Guilford County Democratic Club. She also worked as a deputy register of deeds for Guilford County and was secretary to the board of commissioners in Greensboro.
She married George A. Mercer Dec. 29, 1950, and moved to Long Island, N.Y. As a result of her husband’s government transfers, she and her family relocated to Clearwater, Fla. In 1972, the family moved to Norman. She worked for the local board of elections each time she and her family relocated, including in Norman. She was a member of McFarlin United Methodist Church and active in UMW. She enjoyed playing bridge, collecting antiques and spending time with the family.
Surviving are her husband of 49 years of the home; two daughters, Pamela Ann Mercer of Norman and Suzanne Mercer of Dallas; her mother of Greensboro, N.C.; a sister, Virginia Welch (James A.) Fryar of Gibsonville, N.C.; and a host of other relatives of High Point and Gibsonville. She was preceded in death by her father.
Funeral will be 2:30 p.m. Friday at Havenbrook Funeral Home Chapel by Dr. Phil Fenn. Visitation will be 6-9 p.m. tonight at the funeral home.

Robert Scarbrough
Trinity - Robert Leon Scarbrough, 78, of 5909 Mendenhall Road died Oct. 13, 1999, at his residence.
He was born Feb. 28, 1921, in Louden, Tenn., a son of Curtis L. and Willie Lou Hoosier Scarbrough. He was a retired self-employed plumber and was a veteran of World War II, having served in the U.S. Navy. He was a member of the Stump Sound Lodge #773 A.F. and A.M. in Sneads Ferry, the Scottish Rite and Sudan Temple. He was of the Baptist faith. On June 16, 1945, he married the former Jacqueline Yates, who survives of the home.
Also surviving are three sons, Michael Scarbrough and his fiancee, Cindy Everhart of Thomasville, Ricky Scarbrough and his wife, Aunda, of Sophia and David Scarbrough and his wife, Leonore, of Trinity; a sister, Mrs. Maxine Reid of Archdale; a brother, Jack Scarbrough of Jacksonville; nine grandchildren, Stephanie and Jamie Hollis, Barry Deal, Jonathan Scarbrough, Megan Scarbrough, Lindsay Scarbrough, Dwight Scarbrough, Jessica Scarbrough and Michael Allan Scarbrough; and two great-grandchildren, Christian Deal and Cameron Hollis.
Funeral will be 11 a.m. Friday at Sechrest Chapel in Archdale by the Rev. Steve Welborn. Burial will be in Salisbury National Cemetery. Visitation will be 7-8:30 tonight at the funeral home, 120 Trindale Road, Archdale.
