Lexington - Mrs. Zula Swicegood Grubb, 88, of SunBridge Nursing Home, formerly of Helmstetler Road, died at 10 p.m. June 15, 2000, at the nursing home.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. Sunday at Mount Carmel United Methodist Church. Visitation will be 6-8 tonight at Davidson Funeral Home.
Mamie Hutchens
Archdale - Mrs. Mamie Mabe Hutchens, 85, of West Brook Court died June 16, 2000, at High Point Regional Hospital.
She was born Nov. 16, 1914, in Guilford County, a daughter of James P. and Bessie Shipton Hughes. She was a resident of High Point and Archdale the majority of her life. She was a certified nursing assistant, having received her degree at Davidson County Community College. She was a charter member of Springfield Baptist Church.
She married the Rev. Richard G. Mabe, who preceded her in death. She later married Elder B.D. Hutchens, who preceded her in death. She also was preceded in death by two sisters, Florence Hughes and Virgie H. Ward, and a brother, J.C. Hughes.
Surviving are three daughters, Louise Mabe Greene, Barbara Mabe Brewer and Joann Mabe Ziglar, all of Archdale; two sons, Richard James 'R.J.' Mabe and his wife, Luz, of San Juan, Puerto Rico, and Jerry Lee Mabe and his wife, Sonia, of Jackson, Miss.; a stepson, Keith Hutchens and his wife, Janet, of High Point; three sisters, Annie M. Hundley and Pat H. Ousterman and her husband, Oz, all of High Point, and Pauline H. Campbell of Summerfield; a brother, Fred C. Hughes and his wife, Barbara, of High Point; 13 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. Sunday at Springfield Baptist Church by the Rev. Bobby Loving. Burial will be in Floral Garden Park Cemetery. Visitation will be 7-8:30 tonight at Cumby Family Funeral Service, Archdale.
Edith Smith
Greensboro - Mrs. Edith Underwood Smith, 81, died June 16, 2000, at Wesley Long Hospital.
She was born Dec. 15, 1918. She was a lifelong resident of Guilford County. She retired from Pilot Life Insurance Co. after 25 years of service. She was preceded in death by her husband, Glenn Thomas Smith.
Surviving are her son and daughter-in-law, Tom and Charlene Smith of Greensboro; her daughter and son-in-law, Cheryl and Don McDaniel of Jamestown; four granddaughters, Karen Orrell of Florida, Ashley Cook of High Point, Kelly Smith of Greensboro and Gini McDaniel of Boone.
Funeral will be 11 a.m. Monday at Conrad Memorial Baptist Church by the Rev. Marcus Campbell and the Rev. Bob Hiatt. Visitation will be 7-9 p.m. Sunday at Sechrest Funeral Service, High Point.

Lexington - Jeffrey 'Jeff' Mark Tetter, 22, of Oakwood Circle died June 15, 2000, at his residence.

Laverna Tracy
Greensboro - Mrs. Laverna Davis Tracy, 75, of 5304 Justin Court died June 15, 2000, at her residence.

Arnold Ward
Asheboro - Arnold Franklin Ward, 87, formerly of 339 Thayer Road, Troy, died June 15, 2000, at SunBridge Care & Rehabilitation Center in Asheboro.
He was born March 4, 1913, in High Point, a son of Marvin Hill and Corrina Luck Ward. He was a lifelong resident of High Point. He was a U.S. Army veteran, having served during World War II. He retired in 1978 from Thayer Coggins Furniture Co. He was an evangelist, had a radio ministry for 10 years and was of the Baptist faith. He married the former Mildred Mullinix Ward, who preceded him in death in 1995.
Surviving are two sisters, Pauline Amos of Lexington and Louise Ward of Thomasville; two brothers, Amos Ward of Lexington and Elmer Ward of High Point; a nephew, Worth Thayer and his wife, Grace, with whom he made his home with for five years at 330 Thayer Road, Troy.
Graveside service will be 2 p.m. Sunday in Floral Garden Park Cemetery by the Rev. Derald Smith. Visitation will be 7-8:30 tonight at Cumby Family Funeral Service, Archdale.
Ida Kiger
Lexington - Ida Belle Pressley Kiger, 81, of Walford Street died at 4:50 a.m. June 17, 2000, at Forsyth Memorial Hospital after declining health of two months.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at Good Hope United Methodist Church. Visitation will be 6-8 p.m. today at Davidson Funeral Home.
John Palmer
Lexington - John Filmore Palmer, 85, of Hwy. 8 South died at 12:52 p.m. June 18, 2000, at Lexington Memorial Hospital.
Funeral will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at Cotton Grove United Methodist Church. Visitation will be 6-8 tonight at Davidson Funeral Home.
Willie Sweat
High Point - Mr. Willie Howard Sweat, 76, died June 18, 2000, at his home.
He was born Nov. 16, 1923, in Cheraw, S.C., a son of Helen Driggers and Willie Kelly Sweat. He served during World War II in the U.S. Army and the Marine Corp. He was a member of True Light Baptist Church in High Point. He was preceded in death by one sister, Doris White and a brother, L.V. Sweat.
Surviving are two daughters, Bonnie Todd and her husband, Michael, and Carol Whitaker Norman and her husband, Whitey; a son, Howard Michael Sweat and his wife, Sharon; five grandchildren; 4 great-grandchildren; and three brothers, David Sweat and his wife, Elsie, Bill Sweat and his wife, MaryAnne, and G. Prentice Sweat and his wife, Pat.
Funeral will be 12:30 p.m. Tuesday at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel by the Rev. Paul Sparks. Burial will be in Westlawn Gardens of Memory. Visitation will be 7-9 tonight at the funeral home.

Arcadia - Matthew James Barbee, 18, of Mendenhall Drive died at 7:15 p.m. June 11, 2000, at Duke Medical Center, in Durham after a declining illness of several months.

Vara Bennett
High Point - Mrs. Vara Robinson Bennett, 73, of 1020 Montlieu Ave., died June 10, 2000, at SunBridge Care & Rehabilitation for the Triad, where she had been a patient since Feb. 2.
She was born in Anson County, a daughter of William and Alice Stanback Robinson, who both preceded her in death. She was a resident of High Point for more than 60 years. She attended public schools of Anson County and later united in marriage to Lester Bennett, who preceded her in death. She also was preceded in death by three sisters, Mazella, Virginia and Bernice. She was employed at High Point Regional Hospital for 38 years in the laundry/housekeeping department and was given special recognition for her dedicated service there. She was a member of Williams Memorial CME Church.
Surviving are a son, Norman Bennett and his wife, Etta, of High Point; three grandchildren, Tonya England and her husband, Derrick, of Greensboro, Shaun Bennett of High Point and Jacobi Petty of Thomasville; and a host of nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, great-great-nieces, great-great-nephews and cousins, among them, Mrs. Beatrice Atkins, who was very special to her, other relative and friends.
Funeral will be 4 p.m. Thursday at Williams Memorial CME Church by the Rev. Robert Williams. Burial will be in Greenhill Cemetery. Visitation will be 3:30 p.m. Thursday at the church and other times at the residence of Mr. and Mrs. Norman Bennett, 526 Pendleton St.
