Climax - James Kelly Beam, 69, died July 8, 2000, at Moses Cone Hospital in Greensboro following an extended illness.

Annie English
Archdale - Mrs. Annie Roberts English, 61, of 6858 Mendenhall Road died July 7, 2000, at her residence after an extended illness.
She was born July 20, 1938, in Greenboro, a daughter of James S. and Ruby Foster Roberts. She was a member of Ashland Street Baptist Church and was retired from Ryder Truck Lines. On Aug. 4, 1968, she married David James English, who survives of the home.
Surviving in addition to her husband are one son, Duane Roberts of Archdale; one daughter, Jennifer English of Virginia Beach, Va.; two sisters, Carol Hamilton of Summerfield and Sheila Rumsey of Atlanta, Ga.; two grandchildren; and one great grandchild.
Funeral will be at 2 p.m. Monday at Ashland Street Baptist Church by the Rev. Keith Peters. Burial will follow in Carolina Biblical Gardens. Visitation will be 7-8:30 tonight at Cumby Family Funeral Service in Archdale.

Fred Hughes
Thomasville - Fred Alexander Hughes, 74, of 258 N. Westwood Ave., died at 2:02 a.m. July 8, 2000, at Lexington Memorial Hospital.
He was born Aug. 27, 1925, in Randolph County, a son of Homer H. Hughes and Myrtle Irene Gallimore Hughes. He was a retired employee of Rex Plastics and Winn Dixie grocery store. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II and was a member of The Church of Tomorrow.
He was preceded in death by a son, Larry W. Hughes. On Sept. 29, 1945, he married Miss L. Elizabeth Freedle, who survives of the home.
Also surviving are two daughters, Ms. Nancy Hughes Sink and Ms. Kathy Sue Hughes Hicks, both of Thomasville; one son, Freddie L. Hughes of Thomasville; two brothers, Arlie Hughes of Pleasant Garden and Robert Hughes of High Point; seven grandchildren, Melissa Foster, Alan Hughes, Wendy Hicks, Chad Hicks, Christopher Hughes, David Sink and Annette Hughes; three great-grandchildren, Courtney Bean, Spencer Jones and Haley Hughes.
Funeral will be at 2 p.m. Monday at J.C. Green & Sons Chapel by the Rev. D.W. Long. Burial will be in Holly Hill Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be 7-9 tonight at the funeral home and at other times at the residence.

Evelyn Mendenhall
Thomasville - Evelyn Welfare 'Lynn' Mendenhall, 46, of 6691 Wildwood Trail died July 8, 2000, at her home following an extended illness.
She was born Dec. 23, 1953, in Forsyth County, a daughter of Henry F. and Susan Spach Welfare. She was a graduate of Greensboro College and The University of North Carolina at Greensboro and practiced as a certified recreational therapist. She also loved to spend time writing songs and composing music. On Sept. 5, 1998, she married Mont Lamar Mendenhall, who survives of the home.
Also surviving are two step-daughters, Elizabeth 'Betsy' Hoehl and husband Robert of Essex Junction, Vt., and Merry Kathryn Mendenhall and husband Peter Lawrence of Lake City, Fla.; a brother, John S. Welfare of Charlotte; two nieces, Emily Spach Welfare and Jamie Lynn Welfare.
She was preceded in death by a brother, Henry Welfare Jr.; six step-grandchildren, Erin Hoehl, Bart Hoehl and Kirby, Spencer, Sawyer and Reagan Lawrence.
A Service of Celebration for the life of 'Lynn' Welfare Mendenhall will be at 1 p.m. Monday at First Moravian Church, 304 S. Elam Ave., Greensboro, by the Rt. Rev. Graham Rights and the Rev. Wilbur Jarrett. Visitation will be at the home. Arrangements are by Family Funeral Care of Thomasville.

Archdale - Mrs. Muzzette King, 49, of 1609 Greendale Road died at 8:45 a.m. July 8, 2000, at High Point Regional Hospital.

Sophia - Paul Edward Runyon, 63, of Sophia died July 7, 2000, at his home following a brief illness.
He was born in Ransom, Ky., a son of Ernest B. and Stella Runyon. He was employed by Creative Designs Inc. of High Point and was a member of Julian Hill Primitive Baptist Church in Julian.
Surviving are his wife, Lynda H. Runyon of the home; a son, Phillip Ernest Runyon and wife Lynn and three grandchildren, Trevor, Cassidy and Molly, all of Bowling Green, Ky.; brothers and sisters, Douglas M. Runyon and Rosie Martin, both of Sophia, Pat Bunn of Greensboro, Charles Runyon of Thomasville, Birdie Coleman, Annetta Whitt Dotson and Ernestine Hatfield, all of Ransom, Ky., Hassel Runyon of Canada, Ky., Danny Runyon of Varney, Ky., and Melvin Thomas Runyon of Pikeville, Ky.; nieces, nephews, family and friends.
Funeral and visitation will be at 7 tonight at Hatfield Funeral Home Chapel in Belfry, Ky.

High Point - Gary Arnold Stevenson, 37, of Barker Street died July 7, 2000.
He was born in High Point Oct. 9, 1962, a son of William and Hazel Bradshaw Stevenson. He was employed at Claude Gable as an upholsterer and was of the Baptist faith.
Surviving are his mother of High Point; two sons, Michael Blackmon of High Point and Bradley Stevenson of Thomasville; three sisters, Faye King, Jeanette York and Darlene Campbell, all of High Point; three brothers, Richard Stevenson, William 'Buster' Stevenson of Thomasville and Kenneth Stevenson of Cumberland, Md.
Funeral will be at 2 p.m. Monday at Harold C. Davis Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Grayson King and the Rev. Steve Whitt. Burial will be in Floral Garden Park Cemetery. Visitation will be 7-9 tonight at the funeral home.
Billy Brown
Winston-Salem - Billy Lee Brown, 73, died June 30, 2000, at Forsyth Medical Center.
He was born May 4, 1927, in Ottawa, Ill., a son of Raymond Walter and Lillie Grissom Brown, who both preceded him in death. He was formerly employed with Yarbrough Transfer as a traffic manager. He was a U.S. Navy veteran, a member of Ardmore United Methodist Church and Hanes Wesley Senior Citizens. He loved his Upper Room Sunday School Class and also loved sports. He was preceded in death by a sister, Floy Culler and two brothers, the Rev. Chester Brown and Raymond W. Brown Jr.
Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Lois Thomas Brown of the residence; a daughter, Mrs. Carol Brown Lopez and her husband, Kevin, of Germanton; two granddaughters, Jade Squires and Kaliegh Lopez; three sisters, Irene Joyce of High Point, Margie Craven of Thomasville and Florence Hill of Lexington; and a special niece, Donna Schuler of Thomasville.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. Sunday at Ardmore United Methodist Church by the Rev. Lisa L. Wishon and the Rev. Boyce Huffstetler. Burial will be in Floral Gardens Park Cemetery. Visitation will be 7-9 tonight at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel.

High Point - Thomas Landers Clement Sr., 35, of 906 Blain St. died June 26, 2000.
He was born Jan. 19, 1965, in High Point, a son of Thomas Fred Clement and Nancy Stinson. He was employed with Henredon Furniture Industries.
Surviving are his wife, Clarissa W. Clement of Trinity; his father of High Point; his mother of Shallotte; a son, Thomas Landers Clement Jr. of Trinity; a daughter, Tiffany Leanne Clement of Trinity; two sisters, Loucinda Debra Watson of Shallotte and Melanie Jan Reeves of High Point; three brothers, Scott Wayne Clement of Atlanta, Mathew Hall of Sophia and Bradley Clement of High Point; and his grandmother, Lucille Reynolds Stinson of Shallotte.
Memorial service will be 3 p.m. today at the chapel of Cumby Family Funeral Service, High Point, by the Rev. Wayne Richardson. Visitation will follow the service.
Frances Covington
High Point - Mrs. Frances Barnes Covington, 77, of SunBridge Care & Rehabilitation for the Triad, formerly of 112-C Price St. died June 27, 2000, following hospitalization of one month.
She was born in Lancaster, S.C., a daughter of Jesse and Maggie Dunlap Barnes, who both preceded her in death. She had been a resident of High Point since 1966 and for many years attended Faith Temple Church of God In Christ, where she served as member and past leader of the pastor's aid and assistant co-leader of the Sewing Club. Recently, she was a member of Love and Compassion Holiness Church, where she was honored as mother of the church. She was last employed at Miller Desk Co. She married Timothy Joseph Covington, who preceded her in death more than 20 years ago.
Surviving are three sons, Joseph Covington and his wife, Eula, the Rev. James Edward Covington and his wife, Evelyn, and Stafford Lee Covington and his wife, Barbara Ann, all of High Point; a daughter, Mrs. Parthenia C. 'Parky' Taylor, of High Point; 16 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; 20 adopted grandchildren; a brother, Willie Barnes of Hamlet; three sisters, Mrs. Sena T. Parker, Mrs. Carnese B. Kelly and Mrs. Emma B. O'Neal, all of Hamlet; and several nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. Monday at Faith Temple Church of God In Christ by the Rev. Charles McMurray and the Rev. James Edward Covington. Burial will be in Guilford Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be 7-8 p.m. Sunday at Haizlip Funeral Home and other times at the residence.

Clair Goodman
High Point - Clair A. Goodman, 84, of 1713 Trowbridge Court died June 29, 2000, at High Point Regional Hospital.
He was born March 9, 1916, in Oswego, N.Y., a son of Daniel and Anna Proud Goodman. He was a life member of Benevolent Protective Order of Elk, Lodge 271, where he had served as an exalted ruler from 1966 to 1967. He was a member of Niagra Mohawk 25 Year Club and retired from Niagra Mohawk in 1976. He was a member of St. Peter's Catholic Church in Oswego, N.Y.
Surviving are his wife of 62 years, Alice Hanley Goodman; two children, Thomas H. Goodman of Lovettsville, Va. and Caren A. Voorhis of High Point; and four grandchildren, Christyn Denise Murry of Rochester, N.Y., Cynthia Anne Hollister of Leesburg, VA., Danielle Terese Steele of Siler City and Douglas Gregory Voorhis of Burlington; four great-grandchildren, Carolyn Elizabeth Murry, Laura Michelle Hollister, William James Hollister and Madison Taylor Steele.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. today at Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church by Father Jack Kelly OSFS. Another service will be held July 15, in St. Peter's Cemetery, Oswego.
