Austin Clifton
Archdale - Austin Bailey Clifton, 82, of The Presbyterian Home, died July 10, 2000, at Wesley Long Community Hospital.
He was born Jan. 5, 1918, in Harnett County, a son of James A. and Emma Copley Clifton. He retired from Gilbarco Inc. in 1985. He was a U.S. Navy veteran, having served during World War II, and was a member of Bessemer United Methodist Church. On March 11, 1939, he married the former Helen Strickland, who preceded him in death in 1986.
Surviving are a daughter, Connie Culler and her husband, Jerry, of Archdale; two sisters, Mrs. Dorothy Isaacson and Mrs. Estelle McLellan of Greensboro; a brother, Hubert Clifton of Greensboro; two grandchildren, Brian Culler and his wife, Angie, and Michelle Kirkman and her husband, Leon; four great-grandchildren, Lauren Culler, Chad Culler, Adam Kirkman and Savannah Kirkman.
Graveside service will be 10 a.m. Wednesday in Guilford Memorial Park Cemetery by the Rev. Brian Donley. Visitation will be 7-8:30 tonight at Sechrest Funeral Service, Archdale, and other times at 102 Courtland Lane, Archdale.
Leroy Cotton Sr.
High Point - Leroy Cotton Sr., 79, of 836 Willow Place died July 9, 2000, at High Point Regional Hospital.
He was born Nov. 13, 1921, in Randolph County, a son of Leroy and Sallie Long Cotton. He married Louise Gray Cotton, who preceded him in death. He retired as a cement finisher with Aycock Floor Design after 20 years of service. He was a member of Southmont Baptist Church and VFW#5574. He attended Randolph County schools. He was a U.S. Army veteran, serving for three years. He was preceded in death by a sister, Rubie Jean Watson.
Surviving are three sons, Leroy (Gwen) Cotton Jr. and Gerald (Patricia) Cotton, all of High Point, and Frederick (Carmen) Cotton of Thomasville; six daughters, Mrs. Barbara Louise (Gregory) Blanding, Mrs. Barbara Ann (Edward) Carter and Ms. Janice Ford, all of High Point, Ms. Margaret Nelson of Thomasville, and Ms. Joyce Faye Cotton of the residence; a brother, Leroy Cotton of Asheville; a sister, Eloise Hines of Thomasville; 28 grandchildren; 39 great-grandchildren; brother-in-law, Harry Gray; and three sisters-in-law, Lillian Alston, Dorothy (Paul) Jones and Ethel Mae Strickland, all of High Point.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. Thursday at New Bethel Baptist Church by the Rev. John Mason. Burial will be in Carolina Biblical Gardens. Visitation will be 1:30 to 2 p.m. Thursday at the church and other times at the residence.

Thomasville - Dwight David Gordon, 54, of Daniels Trailer Park died July 8, 2000, at Lexington Memorial Hospital.
Memorial service will be 7 p.m. Wednesday at J.C. Green & Sons Funeral Home Chapel. Visitation will be after the service.
Treva Greer
Lexington - Mrs. Treva Briggs Greer, 88, of Centerclair Nursing Home, formerly of Becks Church Road, died at 1:15 p.m. July 9, 2000, at the home after four years of declining health.
Funeral will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at Becks United Church of Christ. Visitation will be 6-8 tonight at Davidson Funeral Home.

Thomasville - Darrell Ray Hunt, 44, of Anns Drive died July 8, 2000, at his residence.

Rev. Howard Irvis
Statesville - The Rev. Howard W. Irvis, 79, of 1226 Wall St. died July 8, 2000, at Iredell Memorial Hospital.
He was born Aug. 5, 1920, in Coxsackie, N.Y., the oldest child of William J. and Jennie Mae Bogardus Irvis, who both preceded him in death. On Sept. 13, 1941, he married Muriel E. DeWitt of Kingston, N.Y., who survives. He graduated from Coxsackie High School and attended Livingstone College. He served in the U.S. Navy as section leader and legal court martial yeoman during World War II. He was ordained in the AME Zion Church in 1954, assumed his first pastorate in Catskill, N.Y., and served as church pastor at Southern City AME Zion in East Spencer, Center Street AME Zion (now Mt. Pleasant), Moore's Chapel AME Zion Church in Cleveland and recently was associate pastor at Zion Chapel AME Zion Church in Hiddenite.
He was a devoted member of IBPOE of W since 1954, where he served as assistant and state (North Carolina) chaplain. He was associated with Rutledge and Bigham Funeral Home of Statesville and Clyburn and Bigham Funeral Home, Mooresville, for several years. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Bernard C. Irvis in 1988 and Charles E. Irvis in 2000; and two sons, Ronald C. Irvis in 1981 and Howard Irvis Jr. in 1997.
Surviving are a son, Frederick C. (Vanessa) Irvis of Virginia Beach, Va.; a daughter, Pamela (William 'Pete') Hunter of High Point; two sisters, Ethel Irvis Loftis of Amityville, N.Y., and Lulu Irvis (Leslie) McFoler of Catskill; three sisters-in-law, Geraldine D. Moran of Dayton, Ohio, Ann DeWitt Williams of Baltimore and Sandra DeWitt Culmer of Burke, Va.; a brother-in-law, Ward (Mary) DeWitt of Albany, N.Y.; two daughters-in-law, Catherine Irvis of Miami and Lavon T. Irvis of Statesville; a number of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, cousins, nieces and nephews.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Mt. Pleasant AME Zion Church, 537 S. Center St., by the Rev. Tiggett and the Rev. Billy C. Flemming. The body will be at Rutledge and Bigham Funeral Home until placed in the church at 1 p.m. Visitation will be 7-9 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home, 603 S. Center St. Final rites will be performed at 8:30 p.m. by the North Carolina State Association of IBPOE of W.

Dorothy Lister
Archdale - Mrs. Dorothy Jane Lister, 87, of Westwood Health and Rehabilitation Center and formerly of Charles Avenue, died July 10, 2000, at the nursing facility.
She was born Nov. 14, 1912, in Rowan County a daughter of Wilburn and Mittie Dennis, who both preceded her in death. She was a resident of High Point most of her life. She married Thomas W. Lister, who preceded her in death. She also was preceded in death by a son, Billy Reavis, three brothers and a sister.
Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Terry Rutherford of Lexington and Mrs. Dorothy R. Mishoe of High Point; a son, Donald Reavis of Concord; two stepsons, Orville Lister of Moselle, Miss., and Tommy Joe Lister of Neely, Miss.; a stepdaughter, Mrs. Ruby Ann Smith of Lucedale, Miss.; 18 grandchildren; and 24 great-grandchildren.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. Thursday at the chapel of Cumby Family Funeral Service, High Point, by the Rev. David Angel. Burial will be in Floral Garden Park Cemetery. Visitation will be 7-8:30 tonight at the funeral home.

Lexington - Miss Margaret Lenora McCrary, 78, of 321 W. 7th Ave. died July 10, 2000, at Lexington Memorial Hospital.
Funeral will be 11 a.m. today at First United Methodist Church. Visitation will be at the residence of her sister, Mrs. Grace Lopp, 708 S. Ford St.

Thomasville - Mrs. Mildred Louise Sarvis Collins, 66, of 4409 Meadowbrook View Road died July 12, 2000, at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Center in Winston-Salem.

O. Gripper
Compton, Calif. - Orlando Charles 'Bro' Gripper, 67, of 501 Crestline Drive died July 9, 2000, at his residence.
He was born in High Point, N.C., a son of Johnny and Hallie Christian Gripper, who both preceded him in death. He graduated from William Penn High School and attended barber school in Winston-Salem, N.C. Further formal education was received at Compton Junior College and National Technical Trade School, where he became a certified machinist. He served an enlistment in the United States Air Force. He was a member of the V.F.W. and a life member of Temple Memorial Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by a brother, Donald Ray Gripper.
Surviving are his wife of 44 years, Mrs. Rose Ethel McGee Gripper of the residence; a son, Orlando Charles Gripper Jr. of High Point; a daughter, Mrs. Orlantha Deneise Gripper Lee of High Point; Four grandchildren, Larry D. Lee and Jason A. Lee, both of High Point, Tiana Gripper and Leticia R. Gripper, both of Los Angeles; two sisters, Mrs. Pearline G.(George) Monk of High Point and Mrs. Shirley G. (Robert) Linton of Greensboro, N.C.; two brothers, Lenon Louis (Miriam) Gripper of Lancaster, Calif., and Johnny L. (Alva) Gripper of Greensboro; and there are aunts, uncles, nephews, nieces, cousins, brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, other relatives and friends.
Funeral will be 1:30 p.m. Sunday at Temple Memorial Baptist Church, High Point, by the Rev. Haywood T. Gray. Burial will be in Guilford Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be 1 p.m. Sunday at the church and other times at the residence.

Iris Hall
High Point - Mrs. Iris Seward Hall of 138-A Old Mill Road went to be with the Lord July 12, 2000.
She was born Aug. 15, 1926, a daughter of Gray S. and Janie Clodfelter Seward. On June 16, 1984, she married Eugene D. Hall, who survives of the residence. She was a member of English Road Baptist Church, where she taught Sunday school in the Priscilla Class. She was church clerk and W.M.U. director. She was employed for many years as a business manager at High Point Infant & Child Care Clinic. She was a loving, faithful wife, mother and church member.
Also surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Tommy (Rebecca) Smith of Hickory and Mrs. V.O. (Ann) Roberson of High Point; a stepdaughter, Mrs. Mike (Jeannie) Yount of Washington, N.C.; a son, James Perry Loflin and his wife, Sherry of Greensboro; a stepson, Don Hall and his wife, Judy, of Wilmington; two sisters, Mrs. Joan Mabe of High Point and Mrs. Ira (Norma) Beeson of Thomasville; three brothers, James P. Seward of Centerville, Ga., Allan G. Seward of Wilmer, Ala., and Joseph B. Seward of Vera Dale, Washington; seven grandchildren, Brandon Whitt, Logan Key, Bradley Loflin, Nicole Loflin, Forrest Roberson, Lilly Roberson and Amelia Roberson; a stepgrandchild, Amy Yount; six nieces; and seven nephews.
Funeral will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Sechrest Chapel, High Point, by the Rev. James A. Summey. Burial will be in Oakwood Memorial Park Cemetery. The body will be at Sechrest Funeral Home. Visitation will be 7-8:30 p.m. Friday at the funeral home and other times at the residence and also at the residence of a daughter, Ann Robertson, 205 Old Mill Road.
