Robert Alabaster
Thomasville - Robert Bliss Alabaster, 85, died July 17, 2000.
He was born Oct. 28, 1914, in Richmond Hill, N.Y., the first child of Sidney and Helen Bliss Alabaster. He graduated from Baldwin High School after starring in five high school sports. He was the Long Island backstroke champion. His athletic prowess won him a four-year scholarship to Duke University. He was one of the original 'Iron Dukes' playing under the guidance of Coach Wallace Wade. In 1938, the team traveled by train to California to play in the legendary Rose Bowl game of Duke vs. University of Southern California. The team was undefeated and unscored upon that year but lost the Rose Bowl to USC. He graduated from Duke University in 1939.
On July 12, 1941, he married Evelyn Hohler of Oceanside, N.Y. He served in World Ward II from 1942 to 1945 in the 106th Anti-Aircraft Artillery Battalion, European Theater. He saw seven campaigns in Italy, France and Central Europe and he won the Bronze Star.
After the war, Bob resumed his career with Geigy (now Ciba) in New York City and Ardsley, N.Y. He served in the Army Reserves for 20 years and retired as a major. The family moved to Briarcliff Manor, N.Y., in 1956, where they lived for 16 years.
He and his family transferred to Greensboro after the merger of Ciba and Geigy in 1972. He retired from Ciba Geigy in 1985, as advertising manager after 42 years.
He spent his retirement playing golf at Forest Oaks Country Club, refinishing furniture, keeping his yard in pristine condition and always supporting the Blue Devils' athletic teams. His wife preceded him in death in 1993, and afterwards he moved to the Piedmont Center in Thomasville.
Surviving are three daughters, Robbin Churchill of Atlanta, Gwen Rocque of New Rochelle, N.Y., and Erica Graves of Trinity; two sisters, Charlotte Walker of Ronkonkoma, N.Y., and Dorothy Pless of Jensen Beach, Fla.; a brother, Alfred Alabaster of Jensen Beach; seven grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
A celebration of life will be 2 p.m. Friday at The Piedmont Center, Hedrick Drive. Visitation will be after the service Friday at the residence of Erica Graves, 3568 Carriage Place, Trinity.

Maggie Baker
Cary - Mrs. Maggie Holland Baker, 86, died July 19, 2000.
She married W. Wray Baker Sr., who preceded her in death.
Surviving are a son, Walter W. Baker Jr. and his wife, Jane Green, of High Point; a daughter, Judith B. Beacham and her husband, Fred A. Sr., of Columbia, S.C.; five grandchildren, F. Arnold Beacham Jr. and David W. Beacham, both of Columbia, Susan J. Baker, Valerie Baker Shepherd and Walter W. Baker III, all of High Point; and four great-grandchildren, Nathan P. Morrison and Edward Bennett Baker, both of High Point, Frederick A. Beacham III and Christopher William Beacham, both of Columbia.
Funeral will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Brown-Wynne Funeral Home. Burial will be in Montlawn Memorial Park. Visitation will be 7-9 p.m. Friday at Brown-Wynne Funeral Home in Cary.

Allyssa Barley
Archdale - Miss Allyssa 'Allybug' Diane Barley, 13 months, of 1101 Brookwood Circle died July 18, 2000, at High Point Regional Hospital.
She was born June 18, 1999, a daughter of Darren and Charity Hauser Barley, who survive of the residence. On Oct. 31, 1999, she was dedicated at Conrad Memorial Baptist Church and attended Fairfield Enrichment Center. 'We love you and will miss you. See you soon. Love Mommy and Daddy.'
Also surviving are her maternal grandmother, Beverly Hauser of Winston-Salem; maternal grandfather, Charles E. Hauser and his wife, Lesa, of Lexington; paternal grandparents, Danny and Kathy Barley of Archdale; maternal great-grandparents, Charles and Goldia Hauser of Kernersville and Lewis and Shirley Kiger of Greenville, S.C.; paternal great-grandparents, Hurley and Maxine Barley of High Point; paternal great-grandmother, Juanita Barley of High Point; and an aunt, Kristen Barley of Archdale.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. Friday at Conrad Memorial Baptist church by the Rev. Marcus Campbell. Burial will be in Floral Garden Park Cemetery. Visitation will be 7-9 tonight at Cumby Family Funeral Service, Archdale, and other times at 800 Wall Street.

Patricia Ford
Thomasville - Mrs. Patricia Halker Ford, 58, of 183 Rickard Road died at 12:15 p.m. July 19, 2000, at Moses H. Cone Memorial Hospital following a short illness.
She was born July 7, 1942, in Scranton, Pa. The majority of her life, she was a resident of High Point and Thomasville, and was employed with Claude Gable Co. She attended High Point University and Christ the King Catholic Church. On Sept. 8, 1962, she married R. Michael Ford, who survives of the residence.
Also surviving are three daughters, Mrs. Rob (Kelly) Perryman of Midway, Mrs. Todd (Amy) Kepley of Lexington and Mrs. Geoff (Jennifer) Grayson of Archdale; a son, Richard Ford Jr. and his wife, Marivee, of Thomasville; mother, Dorothy Halker of Maryfield Nursing Home; and six granddaughters.
Memorial Mass will be 10 a.m. Friday at Christ the King Catholic Church by Father Phillip Kollithanth. Visitation will be 7:30-8:30 tonight and a prayer service at 8:30 tonight at Cumby Family Funeral Service, High Point.

Lonnie Mabe
High Point - Lonnie V. Mabe, 47, of 314 Charles Ave. died July 17, 2000, as a result of a boating accident at Lake Thom-A-Lex.
He was born June 16, 1953, in High Point, a son of Carl and Ezlee Brown Mabe, who preceded him in death. He was a lifelong resident of High Point and a graduate of High Point Central High School. He was employed by Prelude Fiber for 20 years. He was a member of Hickory Chapel Wesleyan Church. He was a loving husband, a playful father, and had many special friends. He enjoyed fishing, which he was doing at the time of his death with his friend, Butch Carter. He was a member of the James 'J.J.' Caudle Racing Team and an Earnhardt fan. He and his family often camped at Thousand Trails Campground in Advance. He was preceded in death by a sister, Bobby Peters.
Surviving are his wife, LaVerne Sutherland Mabe of the residence; three daughters, Amber Renee 'Burr' Mabe, Katherine Marie 'Kit-Kat' Mabe and Tracey Darlene 'T.D.' Mabe, all of the residence; a sister, Judy Pollard of Bethel; two aunts, Sallie Dockery of High Point and Louise Brown and her husband, George, of Kansas City, Mo.; his dog, Precious; and cousins, nieces and nephews.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. Friday at Hickory Chapel Wesleyan Church by the Rev. Doug Caldwell and the Rev. Bob Metters. Burial will be in Guilford Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be 7-9 tonight at Harold C. Davis Funeral Home.
Vera Smith
High Point - Mrs. Vera Hedgecock Smith, 95, of N.C. 68 South died July 18, 2000, in Raleigh.
She was born Feb. 11, 1905, in High Point, a daughter of Joseph Soloman and Minnie Clinard Hedgecock. She was a graduate of High Point College and an elementary school teacher for more than 30 years. After her career in education, she became a world traveler, explaining that she wanted to see if everything she taught was true. She was a lifelong member of Lebanon United Methodist Church, where she taught Sunday school and was a pianist. She was preceded into Heaven in 1972 by her husband, Vester Lee Smith.
Surviving are a daughter, Betty Jo Smith Farrington of Raleigh; four grandchildren, Laura Farrington Cammer and her husband, Earl, of High Point, Joseph Smith Farrington of Carrboro, Reno Kirby Farrington and his wife, Sandra, of Madison, and Bailey Bennett Farrington and his wife, Ann, of Durham; a great-grandchild, Nora Bennett Cammer of High Point; a sister, Mrs. Lois Hedgecock Gay and her husband, Frank, of High Point; a sister-in-law, Elizabeth Pendry Hedgecock of High Point, wife of beloved brother, J.S. Hedgecock Jr.; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral will be 11 a.m. Friday at Lebanon United Methodist Church by the Rev. Roland R. Jones. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Visitation will be 7-9 tonight at Cumby Family Funeral Service, High Point, and other times at the residence.

Joseph Wood
Asheboro - Joseph Donaldson Wood, 88, of 5054 Red Fox Trail died July 18, 2000, at Randolph Hospital.
He was born May 27, 1912, in Morganton, W.Va., a son of George Washington and Mary Wintringer Wood. He graduated from Princeton University with a bachelor's degree in French. On March 19, 1938, he married Joanne Hanger, who survives of the residence. He was a resident of High Point for 55 years and retired as a sales representative with George T. Wood & Sons following 10 years of service. He was a member of Community Bible Church.
Also surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Michael (Mary Jo) Armstrong of Asheboro and Ms. Susan E. Wood of Black Mountain.
Memorial service will be 3 p.m. Friday at Community Bible Church by the Rev. Bill Simpson and the Rev. John Willett.
