Chappell Murphy
Thomasville - Mrs. Chappell James Murphy, 88, of Thomasville, died Oct. 17, 1999, in the Beverly Health Care Center.
She was born March 18, 1911, in Forsyth County, a daughter of Rufus James and Barbara Kiger James. She was a former employee of Regan Hosiery Mill Inc. and was a retired employee with Thomasville Furniture Industries. She was a member of Bethany United Church of Christ and the Ladies Bible Class.
She was married to Varney Murphy, who preceded her in death in 1956. She also was preceded in death by four sisters, Della Fowler, Susie Yates, Pauline Haffly and Juanita; and two brothers, Alan James and Walter James.
Surviving are one daughter and son-in-law, Barbara and John Hill of Lexington; one son and daughter-in-law, Therrell and Peggy Grimes of Thomasville; one sister, Mrs. Virginia Hedrick of Thomasville; one brother, Charles James of Asheboro; four grandchildren, James Grimes of Thomasville, Ed Hill of Concord, Steve Hill of Summerfield and Brent Hill of Ellicott City, Md.; and two great-grandchildren.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at Bethany United Church of Christ by the Rev. Robert Thurston and the Rev. Harold Holste. Burial will be in the church cemetery. The body will remain at the J.C. Green and Sons Funeral Home until taken to the church 30 minutes prior to the service.
Visitation will be 7-9 p.m. tonight at the funeral home and at other times at the home of the daughter and son-in-law, Barbara and John Hill, 124 Ridgeway Lane, Midway Community, Lexington.

Since April 1999, she had been a resident of the Beverly Health Care Center. Her family wishes to extend their deep appreciation to the staff for their care and love.
Ellen Myers
Thomasville - Mrs. Ellen Perdue Myers, 63, died Oct. 17, 1999, at Martin Memorial Medical Center in Florida.

Leon Yeckley
High Point - Leon Howard Yeckley, 78, of the Evergreens Nursing Home Inc. died Oct. 17, 1999, at High Point Regional Hospital.
He was born Sept. 12, 1921, in Plainwell, Mich., the son of Bertie Lee and Zella Carlisle Yeckley. On Dec. 1, 1976, he retired from the U.S. Postal Service, and he was a veteran of the U.S. Army. He served as a Boy Scouts volunteer for 50 years.
He was a charter member of First Baptist Church of Wheaton, Md., and was a deacon. He was a member of First Baptist Church of High Point.
On April 6, 1946, he married Geretha McIntire, who survives at Village Green Retirement Center in Greensboro.
Also surviving are one daughter, Mrs. Adele Myers and husband, Don, of 1421 Grantham Drive; two sons, William Yeckley and wife, Peggy, of Statesville and Robert Yeckley and wife, Rebecca, of Colton, Calif.; one nephew, Michael Scott McIntire of Mount Airy, Md.; one brother, Russell N. Yeckley of Murrysville, Pa.; six grandchildren, Stephen Myers, Kimberly Myers, Christine Yeckley, Andy Yeckley, James Yeckley and Elizabeth Yeckley; and one great grandson.
Funeral will be 7 p.m. Tuesday at First Baptist Church by Dr. Bill Slater. Visitation will be at the church after the service and other times at the home of the daughter, 1421 Grantham Drive.

Lexington - Calvin G. Pressley, 71, died Oct. 16, 1999.

Ellen Myers
Thomasville - Mrs. Ellen Perdue Myers, 63, of 103 Lines St. died at 3 a.m. Oct. 17, 1999, at Martin Memorial Medical Center in Florida.
She was born April 2, 1936, in Davidson County, a daughter of Edgar Eugene and Clara Mae Hege Perdue. She retired from serving as office manager with Creative Designs in High Point and was a member of Liberty Baptist Church and the Louise Moore Sunday School Class. On June 29, 1974, she married Carson D. Myers, who survives of the home.
Also surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Tommy (Patti) Ward of Asheboro and Ms. Beverly Myers Martin of Welcome; three sons, Larry C. Robbins and his wife, Beverly, of Atlanta, Perry Lee Robbins and his wife, Harveta, of Lexin tis Foundation, N.C. chapter, 3801 Wake Forest Road, Suite 115, Durham, N.C. 27703 or to the America Lung Association of N.C., 112 Fayette St., Winston-Salem, N.C. 27101.
Edna Oakley
Lexington - Mrs. Edna Madeline Arnold Oakley, 72, died Oct. 17, 1999.
She was preceded in death by her husband, James Oakley.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at Piedmont Funeral Home, Timberlake Chapel.
Addison White
Randleman - Addison O. “Noochie” White, 77, of 116 Sunrise Circle died Oct. 18, 1999, at his residence.
He was a native of Guilford County and a U.S. Marine veteran of World War II. He retired from Allen Precision Industries Inc. in Asheboro and was owner and operator of White Machine Co. from 1970 to 1988. He was a member of Mt. Lebanon United Methodist Church.
Surviving are a daughter, Gayle W. Williams of Randleman; a sister, Pearl W. Edwards of Burlington; and a granddaughter, Tara W. Gates of Randleman.
Funeral will be 4 p.m. Wednesday at Mt. Lebanon United Methodist Church by the Rev. David Hamlyn. Burial will be in Bethany United Methodist Church Cemetery. Visitation will be 7-9 tonight at Pugh Funeral Home, 600 S. Main St.

Beulah Benoy
Midway - Mrs. Beulah Sink Benoy, 85, of Old N.C. 52 South, died at 2:05 p.m. Oct. 18, 1999, at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Midway United Methodist Church. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Visitation will be 6:30-8:30 tonight at Davidson Funeral Home, Hickory Tree Chapel.
James Bingham Jr.
RALEIGH - Dr. James P. Bingham Jr., formerly of Lexington, died Oct. 19, 1999, at Rex Hospital.
He was born Jan. 29, 1916, in Davidson County, a son of Dr. James P. Bingham Sr. and Annie Fletcher Bingham. He was preceded in death by a brother, Dr. W.L. Bingham.
He received his pre-dental education at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and his degree from Emory University Dental School. He served in the U.S. Army’s Dental Corp for five years during World War II and for four years during the Korean conflict. He also was promoted to the rank of lieutenant colonel.
He served his community in many capacities. He served as Scout master of the First Baptist Church troop in Lexington for many years. He was president of the YMCA and Kiwanis Club, both of Lexington. He organized and served as chairman of the Davidson County Bicentennial Commission. He also served twice as president of the N.C. Archaeological Society, donating a large collection of pre-historic and Native American artifacts to the School of Anthropology at UNCChapel Hill.
Surviving are his wife, Georganne Coble Bingham, formerly of Lexington and currently director of external affairs at the N.C. Museum of Art; a daughter, Mrs. J. Edward Rhodes of Southern Pines; two sons, William Frank Bingham of High Point and James Hugh Bingham Sr. of Lincolnton; one stepdaughter, Mrs. James Nance of Lexington; one stepson, Ed Jordan of Lexington; two sisters, Mrs. Flynn S. Smith of Anderson, S.C., and Mrs. Barbara Garrison of Winston-Salem; and he also was a loving grandfather of nine grandchildren.
Graveside service will be 2 p.m. Thursday in National Cemetery in Salisbury. Visitation will be noon-1:30 p.m. Thursday at Davidson Funeral Home, 24 E. Third St., Lexington.

Marilyn Bowman
HUBERT - Mrs. Marilyn Lingofelt Bowman, 65, of 405 Queens Haven Road died at 12:34 p.m. Oct. 19, 1999, at Craven Regional Medical Center in New Bern. She had been in declining health several years.
She was born June 28, 1934, in Indiana, a daughter of Paul and Era Gorsuch Lingofelt. She was a retired seamstress and had been a former resident of High Point until moving to Hubert in 1998. She attended Fairfield Baptist Church in High Point and Broad Creek Church of God in Hubert. In 1967, she married Bobby McArthur Bowman, who survives of the home.
Also surviving are one daughter, Mrs. Gary (Christine) Smith of 2221 Edgewood Drive, High Point; five sons, Thomas Leroy Whipple of High Point, Jimmy Whipple of Orlando, Fla., Billy Sikonia of Schofield, Wis., Carl Sikonia of Norfolk, Va., and Steve Sikonia of California; one sister, Mrs. John (Judy) Wright of Cottage Grove, Minn.; 11 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. Thursday at the chapel of Cumby Family Funeral Service in Archdale by the Rev. James J. Grant. Burial will be in Guilford Memorial Park. Visitation will be 7-8:30 tonight at the funeral home and other times at the residence of her daughter.

Walter Chapman Sr.
High Point - Walter Clifton Chapman Sr., 43, of 1423 Madison St. died Oct. 17, 1999, at his residence.

Pauline Conn
Charlotte - Pauline Elizabeth Saltz Conn, 78, of 4605 Spring Trace Drive, formerly of Archdale, died Oct. 16, 1999, at the University Hospital in Charlotte.
She was born March 4, 1921, in Guilford County, a daughter of Robert and Mildred Rutledge Saltz. She retired from the Woolco Co. in 1987 and was a member of Faith Baptist Church. On Nov. 25, 1948, she married Colonel A. Conn Jr., who preceded her in death Jan. 8, 1997.
Surviving are a daughter, Mrs. Coran “Lorraine” Ramsey of Charlotte; a son, Colonel Anthony Conn III of Charlotte; five sisters, Doris Malactras of Archdale, Betty Clewis and Evelyn White, both of High Point, Vivian Falconero of Conshohocken, Pa., and Ophelia Poole of Wilmington; three grandchildren, Scott Ramsey, David Conn and his wife, Carol, and Dawn Ramsey, all of Charlotte; several nieces and nephews; and a special friend, Shirley Osborne of Charlotte.
