Ray Lee Canady, 43, of 113 College St., Apt. 14, died Aug. 5, 2000.
He was born Jan. 15, 1957, in Roberson County, a son of Bracy and Lee Esther Oxendine Canady. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, having served in the 82nd Airborne Division. He was employed with Arnold Jones Heating and Air Conditioning and was of the Baptist faith.
Surviving are a daughter, Holly Lynn Jacobs of Salisbury; two sisters, Margaret Canady of Lumberton and Mrs. Jessie Hunt of High Point; two brothers, Jearl and Hearl Canady, both of High Point.
Memorial service will be 4 p.m. Saturday at the chapel of Family Funeral Care, Thomasville, by the Rev. Amos Mashburn.

Mrs. Betty Mae Boles Fowler, 62, of Briarpatch Lane, died Aug. 9, 2000, at High Point Regional Hospital.
She was born July 11, 1938, a daughter of Thomas and Ida Durham Boles. She was a former resident of Sophia and lived in Thomasville for the last 10 years. She was employed with Thomasville Furniture Industries Inc.
Surviving are a daughter, Mrs. Danny (Darla) Murphy of Colfax; a son, J. Clinton Fowler and his wife, Jamie, of Trinity; several nieces and nephews; a sister, Mrs. Phyllis Ann Mills of Thomasville; a brother, Bobby Lee Boles of High Point; and seven grandchildren.
Memorial service will be 4:30 p.m. Saturday at Grace Church, 1141 Enterprise Drive, High Point. Visitation will be 7-8:30 tonight at Cumby Family Funeral Service, High Point.

Vernon Wayne 'Hank' Sherman, 27, left this life Aug. 9, 2000, to live with our Lord. He succumbed to complications of Crohn's disease that he had for several years.
He was born Oct. 20, 1972, a son of Vernon C. Sherman Jr. and Dorothy Nash Cullop Sherman of Abington, Va., formerly of Rome, N.Y. They both preceded him in death. He was a native of Abington, but resided with his sister, Betty Talton, in High Point for the past 11 years. He was a 1991 graduate of Ragsdale High School. Prior to his illness, he was employed with Food Lion in High Point.
Surviving are a sister, Betty Cullop Talton of Greensboro; a brother, Jim W. Cullop and his wife, Dee, of High Point; a nephew, Timothy James Cullop of Franklinville; two great-nieces, Sayge Cullop and Gracie Cullop, both of Franklinville; also aunts, uncles and cousins of Virginia, Tennessee and upstate New York areas.
Memorial service will be 2 p.m. Saturday at East Side Baptist Temple, 3100 Wilma Ave., High Point, by the Rev. Roger Grant. The body will be laid to rest with his mother and father in Knoll-Kreg Cemetery in Abington at a later date.

Mrs. Mildred Baker Smith, 82, of 219 Horneytown Road died at 1:30 p.m. Aug. 10, 2000, at High Point Regional Hospital following declining health of several years.
She was born Dec. 12, 1917, in Wise County, Va., a daughter of Halsey Nathan and Blanche Hill Baker. She was a resident of High Point the majority of her life. She was a former employee of Silver Knit Hosiery and retired as owner and operator of Norgetown Laundry and Dry Cleaning. She attended Archdale First Church of God. On June 7, 1941, she married Robert G. Smith Sr., who survives of the residence.
Also surviving are a son, Robert G. Smith Jr. of the residence; two daughters, Mrs. Samuel (Martha) Townsend of Hickory and Mrs. Michael (Judith) Walker of High Point; four grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
Funeral will be 11 a.m. Saturday at the chapel of Cumby Family Funeral Service, High Point, by the Rev. John C. Osteen and the Rev. Hallie E. Scott. Burial will be in Floral Garden Park Cemetery. Visitation will be 7-8:30 tonight at the funeral home.

Mrs. Travis Virginia Law Smith, 84, of 104 Camden Woods Drive, formerly of 6612 Merritt St. in Forestville, Md., died Aug. 9, 2000, at High Point Regional Hospital.
She was born Feb. 29, 1916, in Washington, D.C., a daughter of Guss and Vallie Harrell Law Sr. She was of the Catholic faith and retired from Merrill Lynch Inc. On Oct. 4, 1941, she married Walter V. Smith. They moved from Maryland to Thomasville in February.
Surviving are her husband of the residence; two sons, Bruce Smith and his wife, Shelly, of Thomasville and Barry Smith and his wife, Betty King, of Tampa, Fla.; five granddaughters, Erin and Lori Smith, Jennifer Slabaugh, Stephanie Clarey and Kim Stinziano; two great-granddaughters, Shea and Morgan Clarey; a sister, Charlotte Neiss of Oxon Hill, Md.; two brothers, Guss L. Law Jr. and his wife, Audrey, of Orlando, Fla., and Gerald Law and his wife, Betsy, of Colonial Beach, Va.
Graveside service will be 11 a.m. Saturday in Cedar Hill Cemetery, Suitland, Md.

Mrs. Rachel Leonard Swails Turner, 71, died Aug. 9, 2000, at Britthaven of Guilford.
She was born April 21, 1929, in Guilford County, a daughter of Robie and Cora Caroline Clark Leonard. She was employed with Howard Johnson's for more than 30 years. She was preceded in death by her sister, Helen Godfrey.
Surviving are her husband, Hubert T. Turner Sr. of the residence; a daughter, Donna G. Embling and her husband, David, of Greensboro; a son, Douglas M. Swails and his wife, Glenda, of Sophia; three stepdaughters, Rita Faye Shelton and June Boseman, both of Greensboro, and Ann Mills of Travelers Rest, S.C.; two stepsons, John Wade Turner and Hubert T. Turner Jr., both of Greensboro; her mother of Greensboro; two sisters, Dot Thomas of Greensboro and Shirley Corine Cox of Myrtle Beach, S.C.,; three brothers, Wayne Leonard of Greensboro, the Rev. Gary Leonard of Mt. Airy and Conerd Leonard of Greensboro; three grandchildren; a great-grandchild; and five stepgrandchildren.
Funeral will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Lambeth-Troxler Funeral Service Chapel by the Rev. Allen Barrett. Burial will be in Lakeview Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be 7-9 tonight at the funeral home.

Judith Holzworth

Mrs. Judith Allen Smith Holzworth, 91, of The Presbyterian Home of High Point since May, formerly a longtime resident of Thomasville, died Aug. 8, 2000, at the home.
She was born Oct. 21, 1908, in Danville, Ky., where she was a 1929 graduate of Centre College. In 1932, she married Ralph Ward Holzworth of Pineville, Ky., who preceded her in death in 1940. She taught in the public schools of Danville, Deering, Mo., and Lithonia, Ga., and served as a school librarian in Atlanta and Decatur, Ga. After retirement, she moved to Thomasville in 1982, where she spent the later years of her life helping to care for her daughter, Charlotte, during an extended illness. She was preceded in death by her daughter, Charlotte Anne Holzworth Patterson in February of 2000.
She was a member of First Presbyterian Church of Thomasville, where she was active in Sunday school, Presbyterian Women and world mission concerns. She also was involved in Habitat for Humanity of Thomasville and many other charities.
Surviving are her son, Ralph Ward Holzworth Jr. of Atlanta; four grandsons, Randal Allen Holzworth and Daniel Ward Holzworth, both of Atlanta, Charles Ward Patterson of Richmond, Va. and John Samuel Patterson of Hyattsville, Md.; and three great-grandchildren, Alexandra Elizabeth Holzworth, Joshua Rogers Patterson and Peyton Carol Holzworth.
Memorial service will be 11 a.m. Aug. 19, at First Presbyterian Church of Thomasville, by the Rev. Robert Hann leading the Celebration of the Resurrection. Burial of her ashes will be in Pineville, Ky. at a later date.
