Mrs. Kathryn Bowers Bridges, 44, of 200 Lake Drive, died Aug. 12, 2000, at the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home in Winston-Salem.
She was born in High Point on Sept. 14, 1955, a daughter of Will Bowers and Alma Darr Bowers, and had been a resident of Thomasville most of her life. She graduated from Thomasville High School in 1973 and from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro with a BA degree in education in 1977. She was a former school teacher in the Greensboro City Schools, the Thomasville City Schools and at Westchester Academy. She was a former organist and choir director at Calvary United Church of Christ. She was a member of Memorial United Methodist Church where she was a member of the church choir, a member of the Morning Handbell Choir and a former Sunday school teacher. On Sept. 25, 1982, she was married to Brent B. Bridges who survives of the home.
Also surviving are two sons, William Bridges and Stephen Bridges, both of the home; and her mother, Mrs. Alma Bowers of Thomasville. She was preceded in death by a son, Justin Bridges.
Funeral will be 11 a.m. Monday at Memorial United Methodist Church by Dr. Kyles Y. Wallace and the Rev. Peggy A. Finch. Burial will be in Calvary United Church of Christ Cemetery. The body will remain at J.C. Green & Sons Funeral Home until the hour of the service. The family will be at the funeral home from 7 to 9 tonight.

Beverly Wernham Chaney, 36, of 1609 White St. Ext., died Aug. 11, 2000.
A graveside service will be held 11 a.m. Monday at Parklawn Cemetery in Winston-Salem.
The family will receive friends from 11 a.m. to noon Monday prior to the service at Davidson Funeral Home Hickory Tree Chapel.
Thomas Farlow

Thomas Arrington Farlow, 80, of Greensboro, died Aug. 10, 2000, at The Presbyterian Home in High Point.
He was born March 16, 1920, in Randolph County, to John Walter and Mary Bunting Farlow. He was a graduate of Trinity High School and a 1941 graduate of High Point College. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, having enlisted in 1942 as a private. He went overseas in October 1944, serving with the 100th Infantry in France and Germany as an assistant intelligence officer with the 100th Division in the 7th Army. Later, he was promoted to 2nd lieutenant on the battlefield in Germany and was awarded the Bronze Star. He retired in 1986 from his position in National Customer Service Relations at Thayer Coggin Inc. He attended Bunker Hill Primitive Baptist Church. On Dec. 23, 1943, he married Pauline 'Polly' Biggs Farlow who survives of the home.
Also surviving is a daughter, Gayla Dean Farlow of High Point; and a grandson, Thomas Benjamin Farlow of Greensboro. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Rodney Tom Farlow on March 3, 1992.
There will be no visitation. Burial will be private. A memorial service will be conducted at a later date. Mrs. Rachel Dixon Pleasants, 74, of Greensboro, died Aug. 10, 2000, from injuries received in an automobile accident.
She was a homemaker and a member of Congregational United Church of Christ. She touched many lives through her kindness. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and friend. Her love for God was personified in the way she showed her love and her genuine concern for the well being of her family and for all those individuals she came in contact with. If you ever met Rachel, count yourself as one of the truly fortunate ones. You would have been blessed. Our home on Earth has a lost a key member but our heavenly household has added the one that was lost and will truly be missed by all.
She is survived by her husband of 47 years, James R. 'Dick' Pleasants, of the home; a son, Jimmy, of Greensboro; a daughter, Patti Boone, and her husband, Walter, of High Point; a son, Bobby, and his wife, Lisa, of Madison; a sister, Charlotte Wright, of Bethesda, Md.; brothers, Ray Dixon and his wife, Sarah, of Browns Summit, Hack Dixon and his wife, Martha, of Raleigh, and Jimmy Dixon and his wife, Becky, of Browns Summit; a granddaughter, Carrie Boone; step-grandchildren, Kyle and Katelin; and several nieces and a nephew.
A graveside service will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday at New Garden Cemetery with Dr. William C. Smith officiating. The family will receive friends from 2-4 p.m., and also from 7-9 p.m. Monday at Forbis & Dick Guilford Chapel.

Mrs. Ruby Turner Elliott, 67, of 1139 Fisher Ferry Road, died Aug. 13, 2000, at her residence. She was born in High Point on July 11, 1933, a daughter of John James Turner and Clara Leona Williamson Turner, and was a resident of Thomasville for most of her life. She was a member of First Baptist Church where she had served as president of the Truth Seekers Sunday School Class for 25 years. She had retired from Jefferson Pilot Financial in Greensboro. She was a former substitute teacher at East Davidson High School and was a lifetime member of the East Davidson Band Boosters. She had served as an assistant den leader of Cub Scout Pack 104 of Fairgrove United Methodist Church. She was a former member of the Chair City Shrinettes and served as Worthy Matron of the Thomasville chapter 171 of the Order of the Eastern Star and remains a member in good standing. She was a member of the American Business Women's Association and was a member of the Chair City Gnome Gnuts. On Nov. 3, 1951, she married Willie S. Elliott who survives of the home. Also surviving is a son, David Charles Elliott and his wife, Allison, of Thomasville; two sisters, Mrs. Nona Modlin of Thomasville, and Ms. Sylvia Johnson of High Point; a brother, John Turner Jr., of Thomasville; and three grandchildren, Lyndsie Elliott, Lucas Elliott and Logan Elliott. Memorial service will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at J.C. Green & Sons Chapel by the Rev. David Best and the Rev. Sarah Snell. The family will be at the funeral home from 7:30 to 9 tonight and other times at the residence. Mrs. Karrie Morris Hume, 24, died Aug. 13, 2000, at the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home in Winston-Salem following a seven-month battle with cancer. She was born in Pulaski, Va., on Feb. 27, 1976, a daughter of John Henry Morris Jr. and Margaret Julia Ryrah. She was of the Baptist faith and was employed by Happy Rentz. The family wishes to express thanks to Hospice, Forsyth Memorial Hospital, Happy Rentz, Chumleys and many special friends for their loving kindness. Karrie had a zest for live and she will be deeply missed by her family and friends. Surviving are her husband, Robert Hume Jr. of the home; two daughters, Rachael Elizabeth and Hannah Leigh Hume, both of the home; a twin sister, Christina Morris, and a younger sister, Rebecca Morris, both of High Point; her mother of High Point; and her grandmother, Lori Britt of High Point. Graveside service will be 3 p.m. Tuesday in Floral Garden Park Cemetery by the Rev. John Hill Jr. The family will receive friends at the Harold C. Davis Funeral Home from 7 to 9 tonight. Mrs. Mary Smith Mitchell, 82, formerly of Eaton Place, died Aug. 12, 2000. She was born in Randolph County on May 13, 1918, to John Webster and Ida Mae Wall Smith. She had been a resident of High Point since 1937. She was a seamstress and had been associated with Anvil Brand, Archdale Manufacturing and had managed the Smitherson Quilting Firm for several years. She retired in 1980 from N.C. Garment Co. and later operated a small alterations business from her home. She was a member of Level Cross United Methodist Church. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Gearldine Bell Mitchell, in June 1949. She married Woodrow W. Mitchell who died May 21, 1985. Surviving are two daughters and sons-in-laws, Ruth Sexton Batten and her husband, Doyle Sr., and Sherry Mitchell Sumner and her husband, Bobby L., all of High Point; four grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; three step-grandchildren; two step-great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. Funeral will be 4 p.m. Tuesday in Sechrest Chapel on E. Lexington Avenue by the Rev. Ken Day and the Rev. Fred W. Reece. Burial will be in Floral Garden Park Cemetery. George Macolm Spinnett, 88, of 620 Keck Road, died at 11:50 a.m. on Aug. 12, 2000, at his residence following four years of declining health. He was born in Buffalo, N.Y., son of Joseph Franklin Spinnett and Georgie Mae Spinnett. He was a retired civil defense director in High Point and member of the Reorganized Church of The Latter Day Saints. He was also involved in the American Association of Retired People and was program chairman of The Historic Society in Franklin County, Va. He was married to Mrs. Mildred Frances Angell Spinnett who preceded him in death. Also preceding him in death was a son, Dennis Franklin Spinnett, a sister and a brother. He is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Carol Angel Jones of the home and Mrs. Lois Greene of Henry, Va.; a son, Dale Spinnett of Winston-Salem; nine grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren. A memorial service will be held at a later date. The family will be at the residence. Lowe Funeral Home and Crematory in Burlington is in charge of arrangements.
