Mrs. Mildred Patterson 'Pat' Manley, 75, of 1102 Tabor St. died Aug. 18, 2000, at High Point Regional Hospital.
She was born Nov. 3, 1924, in High Point, a daughter of Cletus A. and Carrie McGhee Welch. She was a resident of High Point all of her life and was a telephone operator at North State Telephone Co., retiring in December 1979. She was a member of Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church. On June 30, 1948, she married Marvin Byrum Manley, who survives of the residence.
Also surviving are a son, Michael Manley and his wife, Kay, of Trinity; two sisters, Mrs. Margaret W. Hill of Clemmons and Mrs. Anne Poole of Garden City, S.C.
A prayer service will be held 7 tonight at Sechrest Funeral Service Chapel, E. Lexington Avenue, by Father Joseph C. Zuschmidt. Visitation will follow the prayer service until 8:30 tonight.

Evlas Lottie Cox McDowell, 87, died Aug. 19, 2000.

James Thomas 'Hamp' Miller, 59, formerly of High Point, died Aug. 17, 2000.
Surviving are his wife, Catherine P. Miller; two sons, James T. and Jason D. Miller; one daughter, Renee Y. Myers; two grandchildren, Derrick and Max; his mother, Geneva Miller; two brothers, Daniel and Earnest Miller; and many other relatives and friends. His was preceded in death by his father, Hamp Miller; a daughter, Michelle D. Miller; and a sister, Jean Miller Bullock.
Funeral will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at J.B. Jenkins Funeral Home, 7474 Landover Road, Landover. Burial will be in Maryland Veterans Cemetery, Chettenham. Visitation will be 9 a.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.

Roland Mitchell, 96, died Aug. 18, 2000, at C.M. Tucker Center, where he had resided more than 25 years.
He was born in Gaffney, S.C., a son of Richard and Ella Brown Mitchell, both of whom preceded him in death. He was a farmer and was previously employed on various farms. He was of the Baptist faith. He was preceded in death by his wife, Arrie Allen Mitchell; a son, Fred Mitchell; and a sister, Eunice Littlejohn.
Surviving are three grandchildren, all of South Carolina; seven great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; several nieces, among them, Mrs. Eloise Whitworth and her husband, Samuel, of High Point, N.C.; several nephews; a host of cousins, among them Isabelle Hoey of High Point; and many other relatives and friends.
Funeral will be 1 p.m. Tuesday at Haizlip Funeral Chapel, 206 Fourth St., High Point, by the Rev. Lawrence Curtis. Burial will be in Oakwood Memorial Park, High Point. Visitation will be 12:30 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral chapel and other times at the residence of Mr. and Mrs. Samuel Whitworth, 1107 Cedrow Drive, High Point.
Shirley Phillips

Mrs. Shirley Harris Phillips, 63, of 515 Ridgecrest Drive died Aug. 18, 2000, at High Point Regional Hospital after an extended illness.
She was born Aug. 1, 1937, in Rockingham County, a daughter of Ronie and Mary Vernon Harris, who preceded her in death. She attended Victory Hill Pentecostal Holiness Church in Stoneville. Her husband, Obie Darrell Phillips, preceded her in death in 1993.
Surviving are her son, Charles Darrell Phillips of the residence; her daughter, Reginia Renee Frank and her husband, Bruce, of High Point; three brothers, Terry Harris of Sandy Ridge, Larry Harris and Wayne Harris, both of Stoneville; and a sister, Linda Dodson of Stoneville.
Funeral will be 11 a.m. Monday at the chapel of Cumby Family Funeral Service, High Point, by the Rev. Delbert Hill and the Rev. Alford Goins. Burial will be in Floral Garden Park Cemetery. Visitation will be 7-8:30 tonight at the funeral home.

Mrs. Peggy Beatrice Craver Sowers, 70, of Calvin Sowers Road died at 10:55 p.m. Aug. 18, 2000, at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center.
Graveside service will be 2 p.m. today in Forest Hill Memorial Park.
Davidson Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Lacy Thomas Underwood, 91, of 1202 Westside Drive died Aug. 16, 2000.
He was the son of Thomas and Vandalia Bishop Underwood, who preceded him in death. He was a retired diesel mechanic for Overnite Trucking Co.
Surviving are a daughter, Doris U. Whitaker of 317 Lake Drive, Archdale, and one sister.
There will be no funeral service.
