Zeffieree Hunter

Mrs. Zeffieree Crawford Hunter, 96, of 1841 Blain St. died Sept. 15, 2000, at her residence. She had been in declining health for one year.
She was born in Macon, Ga., the daughter of Joseph C. and Ada Wynn Crawford, and had resided in High Point most of her life. She attended the public schools, graduating from High Point Normal and Industrial School. For a while, she was employed as a looper at Adam Millis Hosiery. She also was a pianist, and made draperies and some clothing. As a child and young adult, she attended Pearson Memorial AME Church. More recently, she moved her membership to Solid Rock Baptist Church, where she was very active and supportive of church programs.
Her husband, Frank William Hunter Sr. died Aug. 26, 1988. A daughter, Jacqueline H. Motley, died Aug. 8, 1989. Two brothers, Joe Crawford and John Wesley Crawford, and one sister, Odessa C. Haizlip, also preceded her in death.
Surviving are three sons, Frank W. Hunter Jr. and wife, Eglena, of Richmond, Va., Robert L. Hunter and wife, Bertha, of College Park, Md., and James W. Hunter and wife, Edwina, of Laurel, Md.; one daughter, Wanda Hunter Allen and husband, Horace L., of Wilmington; 13 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; 4 great-great-grandchildren; one sister, Mrs. Thelma Peterson of High Point; and nieces, nephews, cousins, in-laws, other relatives and friends.
Funeral will be 1 p.m. Tuesday at Solid Rock Baptist Church by Rev. Alphonso Martin. Burial will be in Carolina Biblical Gardens. Visitation will be 7-8 tonight at Haizlip Funeral Chapel and other times at the residence.
Rena Patterson

Mrs. Rena Crutchfield Patterson, 85, of the Westwood Health & Rehabilitation Center died Sept. 16, 2000, at the center.
She was born May 24, 1915, in Sanford, the daughter of Thomas J. and Alice Medlin Crutchfield. She was a graduate of Guilford General Hospital in 1937. She was a private duty nurse retiring in 1976 and a former member of the Private Duty Nurses Club. She was a member of English Road Baptist Church and the Dorcas Sunday School class. On Nov. 24, 1937, she married George Everett Patterson who preceded her in death Feb. 10, 1974.
Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Kenneth 'Ann' Cannon of High Point and Mrs. Donald 'Nancy' Myers of Trinity; a son, Dr. Tom Patterson and his wife Daisy of Rock Hill, S.C.; seven grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren and on stepgreat-grandchild.
Funeral will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Sechrest Chapel in High Point by Dr. Fred Senter. Burial will be in Floral Garden Park Cemetery. Visitation will be from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at the funeral home.

Ruby Berrier Shoaf, 69, died Sept. 17, 2000.

Mrs. Susan Simmons of 605 Cross St., died Sept. 17, 2000, at her residence.

James Stanton

James Edward Stanton, 74, of 601 Arlington St. died Sept. 16, 2000, at his residence. He had been in declining health for several months.
He was born in High Point, a son of William and Gertrude E. Wilson Stanton, who preceded him in death. He attended the public schools of High Point; attended Johnson C. Smith College (now University), Charlotte and graduated from Shaw University, Raleigh. He resided in Philadelphia for 30 years before returning to his native High Point in 1976. He was a member of St. Stephen AME Zion Church and prior to retirement, supportive director of the St. Stephen Adult Day Care Center. Fraternally, he was a member of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, and past member of the Philadelphia chapter Masonic Lodge.
One son, Daniel Smith, and two sisters, Mrs. Elizabeth Anderson and Mrs. Lula M. Moore also preceded him in death.
Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Doris Phifer Smith Stanton of the home; two daughters, Mrs. Brenda White of Philadelphia and Mrs. Jyll Smith Taylor and husband, Craig, of Alexandria, Va.; three grandchildren; one great-granddaughter; one brother, William E. Stanton III and wife, Margaret, of High Point; one sister, Mrs. Dora S. Butler of Atco, N.J.; and nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.
Funeral will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at Haizlip Funeral Chapel. Burial will be in Guilford Memorial Park. Visitation will be 10 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral chapel and other times at the 601 Arlington St. residence, as well as the residence of Mr. and Mrs. William Stanton III, 1220 Pennywood Dr.

Kenneth White

Kenneth Robert White, 65, of 3409 Pine Valley Road, died Sept. 16, 2000, at High Point Regional Hospital.
He was born Oct. 31, 1934, in High Point, the son of W.L. White and Mattie Jane Reid White. He was retired from the High Point Fire Department and worked with Prudential Reality. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army and was a member of the High Point Elks Lodge and Greenwood Hills Wesleyan Church. On Sept. 8, 1956, he married Bobbie Allred.
Surviving in addition to his wife are one daughter, Mrs. Cheryl White Crosby and husband, Robert, of Chapin, S.C.; one son, Kenneth Scott White and wife, Jeanette, of High Point; her father of High Point; a brother, Calvin White and wife, Ginny, of High Point; three sisters, Mrs. Barbara Thomas and husband, Jack, of Morganton, Mrs. Nancy White and husband, Alan, of High Point, Mrs. Sandra Honeycutt and husband, Don, of Little River, S.C.; five grandchildren, Benjamin Bryan Crosby, Sean Robert Crosby, Brittany Reid Crosby, Marissa Mae White and Alexander Scott White.
Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at Greenwood Hills Wesleyan Church by the Rev. D. Bruce Hopper. Burial will be in Guilford Memorial Park Cemetery. Pallbearers will be C.R. (Jack) Thomas, Jerry Hedgecock, Gary Fulk, Charles Lovelace, Ken Norman and Mike Allred.
The body will remain at Sechrest Funeral Home on E. Lexington Avenue until placed in the church. Visitation will be 7-8:30 tonight at the funeral home.

Aubrey Marshall Griggs, 76, of Brookstone Retirement Center, formerly of Wadesboro, died Sept. 17, 2000, at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem.
Graveside service will be 11 a.m. Wednesday in Deep Creek Baptist Church Cemetery in Morven. Visitation will be Tuesday evening at the residence of his daughter, Myra Thacker.
Pearly Grubb Jr.

Pearly Everett Grubb Jr., 81, of 217 Boyer St. died Sept. 18, 2000, at Veterans Administration Medical Center in Salisbury.
He was born April 22, 1919, in Davidson County, a son of Pearly Everett and Oma Bates Grubb. He was a lifelong resident of High Point. He retired as a self-employed building contractor and was a U.S. Navy veteran, having served in World War II. He was a member of Hilliard Memorial Baptist Church and was one of the original organizers of the church. He was a former Sunday school teacher and a Training Union leader. He coached a girls church softball team and was a former member of the choir. He married the former Floy Buff, who survives of the residence. He was preceded in death by two sisters, Mrs. Jane Byerly and Mrs. Geneva Loflin.
Also surviving are a son, Theron Grubb and his wife, Sharon, of Delran, N.J.; a granddaughter, Wyndee Grubb Davis and her husband, Matt, of Collingswood, N.J.; and two sisters, Mrs. Betty Flynn of High Point and Mrs. Mary Stiles of Archdale.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Hilliard Memorial Baptist Church by the Rev. Raymond Needham. Burial will be in Floral Garden Park Cemetery. Visitation will be 7-8:30 p.m. Wednesday at Cumby Family Funeral Service, High Point, and other times at the residence of his sister, Mrs. Betty Flynn, 1208 E. Fairfield Road.

Ms. Veola Elizabeth Holt, 69, of 2201 E. Green Drive, died Sept. 16, 2000, after seven weeks of declining health.
She was born in Davidson County, a daughter of Robert Ernest Holt and Mary Magdalene Cassell Holt, who both preceded her in death. She lived in Thomasville a number of years prior to moving to High Point. She retired from Acme Book Sample in High Point. After retirement, she worked in various positions throughout the community with United Services for Older Adults. She served an enlistment in the U.S. Air Force. She was a member of New Beginnings Full Gospel Ministries.
Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Judy Holt Moore and her husband, Henry, and Ms. Andra Holt, all of High Point; five grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and a brother, Ernest Lee Holt of Greensboro.
Funeral will be 11 a.m. Thursday at New Beginnings Full Gospel Ministries by the Rev. Michael Ellerbe. Burial will be in Carolina Biblical Gardens. Visitation will be 7-8 p.m. Wednesday at Haizlip Funeral Chapel and other times at the residence.

Mrs. Blanches Powers Lanier, 91, died Sept. 18, 2000, at Laurel Bay Nursing Center.
She was born in High Point, a daughter of Sidney and Effie Nifong Powers, who both preceded her in death. She married Zeb Vance Lanier, who also preceded her in death. She retired from Amos Hosiery Mill, High Point, N.C., and was a member of Christ Memorial Baptist Church in High Point.
Surviving are a son, Billy Vance Lanier and his wife, Judy, of Greenville; a brother, Ernest Powers of High Point; and three grandchildren, Bradley, Brian and Bruce Lanier.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at Sechrest Funeral Home, High Point, by the Rev. Charles Fischel. Burial will be in Floral Garden Park Cemetery, High Point. Visitation will be 7-8:30 tonight at Mackey Mortuary, Century Drive and 1-2 p.m. Wednesday at Sechrest Funeral Home, High Point.

Mrs. Lillie Boggs Proctor, 95, died at 6:30 a.m. Sept. 14, 2000, at Halifax Convalescent Center.
She was born July 23, 1905, in Guilford County, a daughter of Hilery and Daisy Boggs. On Sept. 6, 1928, she married Virgil C. Proctor, who preceded her in death Jan. 15, 1998.
Surviving are her daughter, Ina Grace Dawson of Port Orange, Fla.; three grandsons, Rick Dawson and Tony Dawson, both of Thomasville, N.C., and Dr. Terry Dawson of High Point, N.C.; seven great-grandchildren; and a great-great-grandson.
Visitation will be 5-7 p.m. Sept. 24 at the residence of Dr. and Mrs. Terry Dawson, 1305 Heatherbrook Drive, High Point.
