James E. 'Papaw' Calhoun, 81, died Sept. 20, 2000, at his residence.
He was born Feb. 2, 1919 in Swain County, a son of Larkin and Mary Hartley Calhoun who both preceded him in death. He was a resident of High Point since 1970 and retired from Central Transport. He was a member of Highland United Methodist Church and attended High Point Church of God. He was preceded in death by two sons, James Ronald Calhoun and Clifton Harold Calhoun.
Surviving are his wife of 62 years, Pauline Franklin Calhoun of the residence; a foster son, Don Oakes and his wife, Ermel, of Sophia; three grandchildren, Rhonda Stiltner and her husband, Johnny, of Abingdon, Va., Clifton Calhoun and his wife, Debra, of the residence and Chastity Calhoun of Charlottesville, Va.; a foster grandson, Billy Oakes of Sophia; two sisters, Ruth Moody and her husband, John, and Nina Phillips, all of Jacksonville, Fla.; a brother, J.L. Calhoun and his wife, Irma, of Grundy, Va.; and four great-granchildren.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. Saturday at the chapel of Cumby Family Funeral Service, Archdale, by the Rev. Riley Puckett. Entombment will be in Guilford Memorial Park. Visitation will be 7-8:30 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

Mrs. Ella Mae Mayberry, 93, of Morehead Court Apartments died Sept. 19, 2000.
She was born May 15, 1907, in Surry County, a daughter of Ira Lee and Susan Chandler Bottoms. She was a nursing assistant at Cloverdale Nursing Home prior to her retirement. She was preceded in death by her husband, Fayte Mayberry, and a daughter, Linda M. Fogleman.
Surviving are two grandchildren, Susan Smith of High Rock Lake and Darla McMahan of Southmont; a sister, Mrs. Donna Mercer of Randleman; two great-grandsons, Zack and Johnathan McMahan.
Funeral will be 11 a.m. Thursday at Harold C. Davis Funeral Home Chapel. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service Thursday. Graveside services will be Friday in the Oak Dale Cemetery in Mt. Airy.

Earnest E. 'Jack' Townsend, 66, of 1110 Cedrow Drive died Sept. 18, 2000, at High Point Regional Hospital after declining health of five months.
He was born in Dillon, S.C., a son of Perry and Sadie Carmichael Townsend. He resided in High Point 36 years and was formerly employed at Myrtle Desk as a forklift operator. He was a member of First Emmanuel Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by two sons, Earnest Townsend Jr. and Vernie Lee Townsend; and his brother, Willie (Doug) Townsend.
Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Bernice Williams Townsend of High Point; three daughters, Annette Townsend Davis and her husband, Chris, and Cynthia Townsend, all of High Point and Jackie Townsend of the residence; six grandchildren, Chris Davis Jr., Deanna Davis, Shanida Johnson, Jeremy Townsend, Shriece Cooper and J'mal Townsend; eight brothers, Rufus Townsend of Dillon, S.C., Perry (Elizabeth)Townsend, Lewis Townsend, Dallas (Lelia) Townsend Lattie (Helen) Townsend, Luther (Gloria) Townsend, Melvin Townsend and Tommy Townsend, all of High Point; two sisters, Beatrice Inman of Trenton, N.J. and Mary Alice Williams of High Point; and a host of aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins, in-laws, other relative and friends.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. Saturday at First Emmanuel Baptist Church by the Rev. Lawrence Curtis. Burial will be in Piedmont Memorial Gardens. Visitation will be 1:30 p.m. Saturday at the church and other times at the residence.

Mrs. Bessie Edith Ridge Wade, 96, of Britthaven of Davidson died at 4 a.m. Sept. 20, 2000, in the nursing facility.
She was born Aug. 8, 1904, in Randolph County, a daughter of Henry Branson and Mary Delfina Kindley Ridge. She was a member of Fair Grove United Methodist Church. In 1926, she married William McKinley Wade who preceded her in death in 1956.
Surviving are four daughters, Mrs. Carlos (Sylvia) Crim of Winston-Salem, Mrs. Jack (Barbara) Varner of Thomasville, Mrs. Dorothy W. Coble of Greensboro and Mrs. Robert (Kathleen) Payne of Augusta, Ga.; a sister, Mrs. Mae R. Wright of Greenville; two brothers, Robert and Charles Ridge, both of Thomasville; 11 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren.
Funeral will be 11 a.m. Friday at Family Funeral Care Chapel, 18 Randolph St. by the Rev. David White. Burial will be in Fair Grove United Methodist Church Cemetery. Visitation will be 7-9 tonight at the funeral home.

G. Jay Williard

G. Jay Williard, 94, of 809 W. Parkway Drive died at 7:15 p.m. Sept. 19, 2000, at the residence of Mr. and Mrs. James Reitzel 'Rick' Wagner III., 449 W. Lexington Ave.
He was born March 6, 1906, in Guilford County, on the Williard Farm near what is now Cedrow Drive, a son of Julius Franklin Williard and Sallie Mathews Williard. He was preceded in death by his seven siblings, Hervey Nicholas Williard, Russell Menise Williard Sr., Junius Wayne Williard, Coy O. Williard Sr., Joseph Levi Williard, Nannie Williard Garland and Julia Williard Jennings.
He graduated in 1925 from high school in Jamestown and attended High Point College where he was a member of the basketball team. He was employed at Thomas Hosiery Mill and Silver Knit Hosiery Co. prior to founding Carolina Upholstery Co. in 1940. He was a leader of the High Point furniture industry. He was a longtime member of the First United Methodist Church, where he served on various committees. He was a former board member of the Salvation Army. He was a founder of Crimestoppers and was involved in the development of what is now Guilford Technical Community College.
In 1978, he donated land on Cedrow Drive for construction of Memorial United Methodist Church. He may best be remembered as a longtime benefactor to many individuals and causes in High Point. His motto was, 'The way to have a friend is to be a friend.' He also was also preceded in death by his first wife, Bessie Morris Wagner Williard and her son, James Reitzel 'Sonny' Wagner Jr.
Surviving are his wife of the residence, the former Irene Coe and her sons, Charles C. Robbins of High Point and John C. Robbins and his wife, Sarah, of Kennesaw, Ga.; sons of Sonny Wagner, James Reitzel 'Rick' Wagner III and his wife, Diane, and Jay Wayne Wagner and his wife, Leigh, of 611 Westwood Ave.; a sister, Mrs. Mark (Zelma) Freemon of 230 Hillcrest Drive; five great-grandchildren, Shane Christopher Wagner and his wife, Alecia, Amber Denise Wagner, Margaret Robbins, Patricia Robbins and Sarah Catherine Wagner.
Funeral will be 11 a.m. Friday at First United Methodist Church by the Rev. Donnell L. Lloyd and the Rev. Belvin J. Jessup. Entombment will be in Oakwood Memorial Park Mausoleum. The body will be at Sechrest Funeral Service, High Point, until placed in the church 30 minutes prior to the service. Visitation will be 7-8:30 tonight at the funeral home and other times at the residence of Rick and Diane Wagner, 449 W. Lexington Ave.
Pallbearers will be members of High Point Crimestoppers.

'Dot' Whitaker Adams, 84, of 131 Hedrick Drive died Sept. 21, 2000, at Community General Hospital.
She was born Dec. 1, 1915, in Davidson County, a daughter of Robert Lee and Sarah Saunders Whitaker. She was of the Baptist faith. On April 7, 1938, she married Lester P. Adams. She and her husband were the founders of Adams Woodturning Inc. She was preceded in death by her husband; four sisters, Mary Hendrick, Maggie Hinkle, Addie Bame and Catherine Lloyd; and a brother, Robert L. Whitaker Jr.
Surviving are a daughter, Sandra A. Blackburn of High Point; three grandchildren, Mrs. Craig (Terri) Thomas, Mrs. Mack (Sherri) Jones and Keith Blackburn; and six great-grandchildren.
Graveside service will be 2 p.m. Sunday in Floral Park Cemetery by the Rev. Sarah Snell and the Rev. Mark Nanney. Visitation will be 7-8:30 p.m. Saturday at Cumby Family Funeral Service, Archdale, and other times at the residence of her daughter, 309 Ralph Drive.

The Rev. F.H. Blackburn, 83, died Sept. 20, 2000.
He was born in Forsyth County, a son of William Rowan Blackburn and Dovie Richardson Blackburn. He was a graduate of Mineral Springs High School and attended Piedmont Bible College. He began Meadowview Baptist Church, the first independent Baptist church in Winston-Salem and was instrumental in organizing several churches in North Carolina and Virginia. He retired from R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co. as a mechanic and was currently pastor of Open Door Baptist Church, Walnut Cove. He was preceded in death by his father; a son, David H. Blackburn; and his wife, Electa S. Blackburn.
Surviving are his mother of Winston-Salem; three sons and daughters-in-law, James C. and Shelby Blackburn and Grady D. and Mary Blackburn, all of Winston-Salem, and Paul G. and Pam Blackburn of Thomasville; four sisters, Lucille Flynt, Mabel Tilley and Nina Martin, all of Winston-Salem, and Ruth Reid of Kernersville; six grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
Funeral will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Open Door Baptist Church by the Rev. Don Collins, the Rev. Wayne Sechrest and the Rev. Roger Pinnix. Burial will be in Woodland Cemetery. Visitation will be 7-9 tonight at Burroughs Funeral Home, Walnut-Cove, and other times at the residence of his son, Grady and Mary Blackburn.

Raymond Wayne Farlow, 32, of 5956 Drake Road died Sept. 18, 2000, as the result of an accident.
He was born March 22, 1968, in Greensboro, a son of Raymond Aubrey and Arlis White Farlow. He was a resident of Guilford County the majority of his life. He was a graduate of Southern Guilford High School and attended the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. He served in the North Carolina National Guard in High Point and was employed at Rafferty-Brown Steel Co. in Greensboro. He was a member of First Assembly of God in Asheboro. He was preceded in death by his father, his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Aubrey Farlow, and grandfather, William Jack White.
Surviving are his mother of the residence; a sister, Elizabeth Carol Farlow of the residence; his grandmother, Mrs. Sallie White of High Point; and several aunts, uncles and cousins.
Funeral will be 11 a.m. Saturday in the chapel of Cumby Family Funeral Service, Archdale, by the Rev. James David Kiker and the Rev. Avon Craven. Burial will be in Guilford Memorial Park. Mrs. Lucille Purvis Jones, 86, of SunBridge Care & Rehabilitation For The Triad, formerly of East Commerce Avenue, died Sept. 20, 2000, at High Point Regional Hospital. She was in declining health since 1987.
She was born in Marlboro County, S.C., a daughter of Robert and Della Richmond Purvis, who both preceded her in death. She was a resident of High Point since Dec. 25, 1966. She was an active member of Friendship Missionary Baptist Church prior to declining health. She was last employed at Highland Cotton Mill. She was preceded in death by her husband, James Henry Jones in 1967, two sons, four grandchildren, four brothers, and two sisters.
Surviving are two sons, James Lewis Jones and Jaycee Jones; six daughters, Mrs. Claretta Tyson, Mrs. Annie McLaurin, Mrs. Della Blair, Mrs. Helen Moore, Mrs. Christine Bracey, all of High Point, and Mrs. Mae Frances Edwards of Baltimore, Md.; 30 grandchildren; 40 great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren; a brother, Jessie Purvis; three sisters, Mrs. Lizzie Williams, Mrs. Nellie Ledbetter and Mrs. Pearlie Quick, all of Fayetteville; and nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.
