Ernest Spencer
Greensboro - Mr. Ernest C. Spencer, 73, of Greensboro, died Saturday, Oct. 23, 1999 at Moses Cone Hospital.
Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Monday, Oct. 25, 1999, at Hanes-Lineberry Sedgefield Chapel. Burial will follow in Guilford Memorial Park.
Born in Randolph County, Mr. Spencer was a veteran of World War II, serving in the United States Army Airforce. He retired from Stevens Graphics and J.P. Stevens after over 35 years of employment.
He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Iola Jarrett Spencer of the home; three sons, Bill Spencer and Tim Spencer, both of Greensboro, and Denny Spencer of Carolina Beach; three daughters, Jeannie Martin of Greensboro, Elaine Gardner of Huntersville, and Nancy Brewer of Carolina Beach; four sisters, Nannie Lee Beck of Thomasville, Hazel Spencer of Greensboro, Rachel Ingram of Asheboro, and Eva Hancock of Siler City; a brother, Celo Spencer of Sophia; 13 grandchildren and one great-grandson.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home and other times at the residence of his son, Bill Spencer, at 205 Auden Drive in Greensboro.

Christine Williams
High Point - Christine Goldsmith Williams of 1207 Dartmouth Ave. High Point, formerly of 1824 North Jackson Ave. Winston-Salem, passed away Friday morning in High Point.
She lived in High Point with her daughter, Mrs. Gloria Williams Huntley Bethea. She was born in Greenville S.C, Nov. 3, 1904 to the late John Henry and Maude Austin Goldsmith. She was the eldest of 12 children. She was educated in Greenville Public Schools where she taught briefly. She moved to Winston-Salem in 1937 as the young bride of Zodie Williams who preceded her in death. She was a seamstress by trade and worked in a domestic capacity for may Winston-Salem families. She was a member of First Calvary Baptist Church where she served as superintendent of Sunday School for many years, vice president of the church missionary circle, nurses board and senior choir. She was recording secretary of the Women's’ Missionary Auxiliary in High Point Association. She was a member of the Deaconess Board. She was affiliated with the Jackson Community Club and Atlantic Social Club.
She is survived by a loving daughter, Mrs. Gloria Williams Huntley Bethea of High Point; one granddaughter, Mrs. Robin A Huntley Bristow (Randall); two grandsons, Randall and Ryan Bristow; five sisters, Mrs. Ethel Lean Lewis (Leo), Mrs. Robin A. Huntley Lewis (Jay), Mrs. Clara Wilson, Mrs. Marion Fergeson and Mrs. Myrtle Ashmore all of Greenville S.C; other relatives and friends, Mr. and Mrs. Timothy and Sharon Merriman, nieces, nephews and cousins.
Funeral services will be conducted Tuesday, Oct. 26, 1999, at Calvary Baptist Church, with the Rev. John Jackson officiating. Burial will follow in Piedmont Memorial Gardens.
The family will receive friends Tuesday, Oct. 26, at 12 noon, 30 minutes prior to the service. The precession will assemble and leave from the home of the daughter-Mrs. Gloria Williams Huntley Bethea at 1207 Dartmouth Ave. High Point en route to the church at 10:15 a.m. for services.

Nellie Barnes
Reidsville - Nellie Moore Barnes, 85, died Oct. 23, 1999, at the Carolina House, where she was a resident.
She was a native of Rockingham County and a retiree of Cone Mills. She was a faithful member of Covington Wesleyan Church and a member of the Wesleyan Women.
Surviving are her husband, William Clarence Barnes of the Carolina House, Reidsville; two daughters, Mrs. Claudia B. Deese and her husband, Gary, of Colfax and Mrs. Beverly B. Haynes and her husband, Carl, of Kinston; six grandchildren, Deanne B. Trollinger and her husband, Jeff, Bennett Deese, Will, Josh, Hillary and Tori Haynes.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. today at Covington Wesleyan Church. Burial will be in Reidlawn Cemetery.

Welcome - Mary Ellen Johnson Barnette, 58, of 115 Wilson St. died Oct. 23, 1999, in her home after an illness of two years.

Denton - Phyllis Swaney Bost, 41, of Denton died Oct. 24, 1999.

Thomas Brady
High Point - Thomas Odell Brady, 83, of Sunbridge Nursing Home died Oct. 24, 1999, in High Point Regional Hospital.
He was born Aug. 11, 1916, in Ramseur, a son of Harvey H. and Lizzie Jane Williams Brady and for a number of years he was employed by Adams Millis Corp. He was a veteran of WWII, having served in the U.S. Army and was of the Baptist faith.
Surviving are two sisters, Mrs. Beulah Mae Bowman of Archdale and Mrs. Christine Swinson of Jamestown; three brothers, Howard Brady of Archdale, Garland Wayne Brady of Kingman, Ariz., and Roy Eugene Brady of Ocala, Fla.
Graveside services will be 2 p.m. Tuesday in Guilford Memorial Park Cemetery by the Rev. Bobby Loving. The body is at Sechrest Funeral Home on E. Lexington Avenue and visitation will be 7 to 8:30 tonight at the funeral home.
James Brooks
High Point - James John Brooks, 69, died Oct. 24, 1999, at his residence following two years of illness.
He was born July 28, 1930, in Philadelphia, a son of James Joseph and Helen Piernock Brooks. He was formerly employed as a salesman, was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force and was of the Episcopal faith.
Surviving are his wife, Lillian Brooks of the home; one daughter, Elizabeth Spangle and her husband, Stanley; and one granddaughter, Sada Spangle, all of High Point.
A memorial service will be 2 p.m. Tuesday in the Harold C. Davis Funeral Home Chapel. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service.
Jerry Hunt
Asheboro - Jerry Mar Hunt, 52, of 2261 Beckerdite Road, Sophia, died Oct. 23, 1999, at High Point Regional Hospital.
He was a native of Randolph County and operated a framing shop in his home. He was a member of Pleasant Hill Baptist Church in Randleman.
He is survived by his wife, Doris S. Hammett Hunt of Sophia; one son, Jerry M. Hunt Jr. of Archdale; one sister, Elizabeth Hunt of Asheboro; and four brothers, Willard Hunt, Wesley Hunt, Gary Eugene Hunt and Raeford Hunt, all of Asheboro.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at Pleasant Hill Baptist Church by the Rev. Gary Hill. Burial will be in Randolph Memorial Park. Visitation will be 7-9 tonight at Pugh Funeral Home, Asheboro.

Percy Newnam
High Point - Percy Dalton Newnam, 81, of 3814 Johnson St. died Oct. 24, 1999, at his residence.
He was born April 14, 1918, in Rockingham County, a son of Arthur Lee and Matilda Bell Harville.
He was employed with the city of High Point for 24 years, retiring June 30, 1980 as superintendent of the Water and Sewer Department. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army serving in WWII. A Mason, he was a member of the Piedmont Lodge #681 A.F. & A.M. and held the honor of being a York Rite Mason. He was a member of Oakview Baptist Church. On Dec. 21, 1940, he married Mildred Williams, who survives of the Piedmont Christian Home.
Also surviving are two sons, Ronald Kenneth Newnam of the home and Donald Wayne Newnam of Rocky Mount; one sister, Mrs. Naomi N. Safewright of High Point; two brothers, Raymond D. Newnam of Durham and Sidney E. Newnam of Greensboro; three granddaughters, Courtney Newnam, Jennifer Newnam and Emily Newnam.
Funeral will be 11 a.m. Wednesday in Sechrest Funeral Chapel on E. Lexington Avenue by the Rev. Kenneth Miller. Entombment will be in Guilford Memorial Park Mausoleum with Mason cryptside service by the Piedmont Masonic Lodge #681. Visitation will be 7-8:30 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.

Helen Payne
High Point - Mrs. Helen Hedgecock Payne, 76, died Oct. 22, 1999, at High Point Regional Hospital from the results of an automobile accident Dec. 5, 1998.
She was born Sept. 18, 1923, in Guilford County, the daughter of Harlan P. Hedgecock and Nellie Davis Hedgecock Stevens. She was married on Nov. 1, 1941, to John Paddison Payne who died on Feb. 23, 1988. She was a homemaker and for 30 years was an employee of Confederate Discount Sales. She was a Charter Member of Hillcrest Baptist Church and a member of the Dorcus Sunday School class.
She is survived by a son, John Roger Payne and his wife, Rosemary, of Kernersville; two daughters, Jean Payne Day and her husband, Joe, of Greensboro and Debbie Payne of Trinity; her mother Nellie Stevens of Greensboro; her granddaughter Tammy Day of Greensboro; six sisters, Mrs. Loiston (Margie) Patton of Newton, Mrs. Ray (Betty) Moore of High Point, Mrs. Al (Peggy) Waters of Myrtle Beach, Mrs. Patsy Pappas of Myrtle Beach, Mrs. Norman (Judy) Foxworth of Greensboro, and Mrs. Tom (Linda) Robinson of High Point. She was preceded in death by her father and brothers.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. today at Sechrest Funeral Service Chapel, E. Lexington Avenue. Burial will be in Abbotts Creek Missionary Baptist Church Cemetery. R.A. Richardson
Winston-Salem - Richard Alan Richardson, 45, of Winston-Salem, died Oct. 23, 1999, at High Point Regional Hospital.
He was born Feb. 19, 1954, in Guilford County, the son of John F. and Margaret J. Webb Richardson. He was a member of Wallburg Baptist Church and former Sunday school teacher, and an employee of Thomasville Furniture Industries. He was a graduate of Mars Hill College and had a master’s of divinity from Southeastern Theological Seminary. He was an assistant football coach at Ledford Senior High School and a former college football player. On Jan. 10, 1981, he married the former Pamela Potter who survives of the home.
Other survivors included two sons, Dylan and Wesley; a daughter Tamer, all of the home; his mother of Thomasville; one brother, J. Terry Richardson and his wife, Pam, of Thomasville; his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Jerry and Ruth Potter; two brothers-in-law, Philip Potter and his wife, Cheryl, Tim Potter; sister-in-law, Deborah P. Jordan and her husband, Danny; one niece, Lauren Potter; seven nephews, Chris and Cameron Richardson, both of Greensboro, Derrick Potter, Matthew Potter, Brandon Lassiter, Tyler Jordan and Trevor Jordan.
He was preceded in death by his father, John F. Richardson in 1990.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at Wallburg Baptist Church by the Rev. J. Max Evington. Burial will be in Holly Hill Memorial Park Cemetery in Thomasville. Visitation will be 7-9 tonight at Foster Funeral Home.

Charles Royal
High Point - Charles Davis “Dave” Royal, 84, of 1619 W. Lexington Ave. died Oct. 23, 1999, at High Point Regional Hospital.
He was born Feb. 14, 1915, in Davidson County, a son of James Gray and Floy Davis Royal. He was retired from Drexel-Heritage Inc. and later was employed at Basic Furniture Styles.
He was a U.S. Army veteran of WWII, attaining the rank of master sergeant and served two years in England in the Ordinance Department. He was an avid jazz musician, specifically big band music and played the bass professionally before WWII and later as a hobby. At one time he served as president of the Musician’s Union for the Triad area. He was a life-long member of Abbott’s Creek Missionary Baptist Church and attended Hayworth Wesleyan Church. On Dec. 24, 1942, he married Vera Jones, who survives of the home.
Also surviving are one son, Charles Craig Royal of 1618 W. Lexington Ave.; one sister, Mrs. Verta R. Hyatt of Greensboro; one brother, James Grayson Royal of Greensboro. He also loved and was loved by numerous nieces and nephews.
Funeral will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at Hayworth Wesleyan Church by the Rev. David M. Emery and the Rev. David Albertson. Burial will be in the family plot at Hopewell United Methodist Church Cemetery. Visitation will be 7-8:30 tonight at Cumby Family Funeral Service in High Point.
