Triad radio pioneer, Mitchel, dies at 78
GREENSBORO – William “Bill” P. Mitchell, 78, of 5602 High Point Road died Dec. 4, 2000, at Moses Cone Memorial Hospital
He was born July 22, 1922. He was raised in Greensboro and graduated from Greensboro Senior High. He was a World War II veteran, serving with the 381st Bomb Group in England in 1943-1945. His career in radio broadcasting began in 1941 with WBIG. During the next five decades he was affiliated with WPET, WEAL and WKEW. He is credited with starting the first R&B station in Greensboro as well as the first sports/talk format. He retired as president of Greensboro Broadcasting Company Inc. and was consulting with WWBG (1470 radio).
His honors and awards include voted Greensboro “Boss of the Year 1992” and awarded SCAP Salesman Award for radio, 1948 and 1949. His affiliations include Greensboro Tobacco Association, Young Men’s Christian Association, Triad Broadcasters Association, Greensboro Merchants Association, Greensboro Jaycees, Greensboro Sertoma Club, Red Shield Boys Club, Greensboro Agricultural Fair and Guilford Park Presbyterian Church. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Pam Mitchell.
Surviving are his wife, Mildred “Micki” Mitchell of the residence; five sons, Stewart P. “Tom” Mitchell of Newport News, Va., Rick L. Mitchell of Lexington, William W. Mitchell of Greensboro, Dr. M. David Mitchell of Spartanburg, S.C., and Stephen T. Mitchell of Ararat, Va.; two brothers, Joseph Mitchell and Donald Mitchell, both of Greensboro; 15 grandchildren; and two great grandchildren.
Funeral will be 1 p.m. Friday at Guilford Park Presbyterian Church. Burial will be in Guilford Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be 7-9 p.m. Thursday at Forbis & Dick N. Elm Street Chapel.

Eartle Smith, 80, of 706 W. Holly Hill Road died Dec. 5, 2000, at High Point Regional Hospital.
He was born Dec. 20, 1919, in Robeson County, a son of Charlie and Mary Alice Mazoo Smith. He was a resident of High Point prior to moving to Thomasville in 1994. He was self-employed in the landscaping business and was of the Baptist faith. On April 29, 1939, he was married to Miss Mary Peterson, who survives of the residence. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Mrs. Gertrude Ingram; and a granddaughter, Mrs. Susan Steele.
Also surviving are three daughters, Mrs. Frank (Mary) Small of Trinity, Ms. Rose Craven of Winston-Salem and Mrs. Carlton (Ann) Hughes of Thomasville; four sons, Richard Smith and Jesse Smith, both of Trinity, Earl Smith of Thomasville and Danny Smith of High Point; a sisters, Mrs. Julius (Gerline) Britt of Lumberton; a brother, Alexander Mazoo of Trinity; 17 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
Funeral will be 3 p.m. Thursday at J.C. Green & Sons Chapel by the Rev. Bobby Metters. Burial will be in Floral Garden Park Cemetery, High Point. Visitation will be 7-9 tonight at the funeral home and other times at the residence.

Mrs. Ina Jane Robbins Wall, 95, formerly of 117 Julian Ave. died at 4:50 a.m. Dec. 5, 2000, at GrayBrier Nursing and Retirement Center.
She was born April 20, 1905, in Randolph County, a daughter of George F. and Bessie Rush Robbins. She was a resident of the Archdale area the majority of her life and a homemaker. She was a member of Archdale United Methodist Church. On Nov. 7, 1925, she was married to Dempsey G. Wall, who preceded her in death April 16, 1966. She also was preceded in death by her son, Charleston G. Wall.
Surviving are a daughter, Miss Margie Lee Wall of the residence; a sister, Mrs. Alta Overman of High Point; a brother, Charlie Robbins of Lexington; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Archdale United Methodist Church by the Rev. Mary John Dye, the Rev. Harold D. Shives and the Rev. Barney Pierce. Burial will be in Mt. Gilead United Methodist Church Cemetery. The body will be at Cumby Family Funeral Service, Archdale, until placed in the church 30 minutes prior to the service Thursday. Visitation will be 7-8:30 tonight at the funeral home.

Mrs. Mazie Jennings Edwards, 86, formerly of 3704 Luck Drive died Dec. 5, 2000, at GrayBrier Nursing & Retirement Center.
She was born Nov. 25, 1914, in Carroll County, Va., a daughter of John and Rausey Alderman Jennings. She retired from Anvil Brand. She was a member of Hillside Park Baptist Church in Thomasville and attended Jewel Baptist Church. On Dec. 21, 1932, she was married to Charles E. Edwards, who preceded her in death in 1995. She also was preceded in death by her daughter, Trudie Turner, and a grandson, Jonathan Daniel Edwards.
Surviving are two sons, Joseph E. Edwards and his wife, Barbara, of Raleigh and Charles Loman “Chuck” Edwards and his wife, Shirley, of Raleigh; three daughters, Clovie Jarrett of Randleman, Mrs. Harold (Wanda) McCandless of High Point and Mrs. Lyndon (Nellie) Dawkins of 1711 Whitehall St., High Point; a brother, Marshall Jennings of Max Meadows, Va.; four sisters, Mrs. John (Edith) Edwards and Isabell Edwards, both of Hillsville, Va., Octivia Thompson of Durham and Modest Lackey of Bassett, Va.; 13 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

Charles Edward Graham Jr. formerly of Winston-Salem died Dec. 2, 2000, at his residence.
He was a son of Charlie E. and Gertrude Lash Graham, who both preceded him in death. He received his early education in the public schools and graduated from Atkins High School in 1943. He attended Winston-Salem State University and Hampton University in Hampton, Va. He was a U.S. Army veteran. He was employed with King & Prince Hotel, St. Simon’s Island, Ga. He was of the Baptist faith and touched many lives with his love and service. He was preceded in death by his sister, Dr. Verdell G. Graham.
Surviving are his brother, Hiram H. Graham of Silver Spring, Md.; and five sisters, Mrs. Moena G. Hinson of High Point, Dr. Clarice G. Carter of Southfield, Mich., Miriam (Roy) G. Gerald. Ms. Delores Graham and Mrs. Laverne (Clark) G. Gaither, all of Winston-Salem; cousins, nephews, nieces and many friends and neighbors.

Lincoln Isaac Gray, 89, of 607 North Ave. died Dec. 3, 2000, at Evergreens Nursing Home.
He was born March 8, 1911, in High Point, a son of Ira Sanky and Daisy Watkins Gray, who both preceded him in death. He retired from Hayworth Roll & Panel in High Point in 1976 as a machinist, after more than 25 years of service. He later worked as a school crossing guard at Fairview Elementary School and enjoyed greeting the children each day. He was inducted into the United States Army in January 1945, and served in Munich, Germany. He received an honorable discharge with the rank of corporal in 1946. “Pop,” as he became to be known, moved to Jamestown in the early 1950s and resided there until 1990 when he moved back to High Point. He was a member of Solid Rock Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by his five sisters, Flora G. Spears, Genevieve G. Goldsborough, Mildred G. Broadway, Daisy G. Scott and Grace G. Lee; and a brother Ira S. Gray Jr.
Surviving are his wife, S. Maxine Baldwin Gray of the residence; a son and daughter-in-law, Lt. Col./U.S. Army Retired Charles L. Gray and Ernestine Herbin Gray of Temple Hills, Md.; three daughters and sons-in-law, Karen G. Atkinson and James W. Atkinson of Shelby, Shirley M. Raper and A.V. Raper, Gladys M. Chavis and Glenn R. Esau Hinson, 68, of 9220 Payne Road died Dec. 6, 2000, at High Point Regional Hospital.
He was born Feb. 27, 1932, in Whiteville, a son of Jasper and Helen Jarrell Hinson, who both preceded him in death. He was a resident of High Point the majority of his life and a member of Deep River Baptist Church. He retired from Woodmark Originals with 33 years of service. He was preceded in death by five brothers.
Surviving are his wife, Helen Pilcher Hinson of the residence; two sons, Stanley L. Hinson of Charlotte and Steven L. Hinson and his wife, Barbara, of Winston-Salem; and three grandchildren, Shawn, Ashley and Allyson Hinson.
Memorial service will be 2 p.m. Friday at the chapel of Cumby Family Funeral Service, Eastchester Drive, High Point, by the Rev. Lamont Scott and the Rev. Wade Nealy. Burial will be in Deep River Friends Cemetery. Visitation will be 7-8:30 tonight at the funeral home.

Clifton C. Jones, 78, of Piedmont Center, formerly of E. Holly Grove Road, died Dec. 5, 2000, at the center.
He was born April 10, 1922, in Lee County, a son of Charlie Elwood Jones and Mae Davis Jones. He was a resident of Thomasville, the majority of his life. He was a U.S. Marine Corps veteran, having served during World War II. He was president and co-owner of Carolina Veneer Co. until his retirement in 1987. He was a member of Bethel United Methodist Church where he was a member of the Men’s Bible Class. He was a former member of the Fairgrove Lions Club. On Aug. 31, 1946, he was married to Miss Willene Hawks, who survives of the Piedmont Center.
Also surviving are four daughters, Mrs. Gerald (Jackie) Causey of Chocowinity, Mrs. Paul (Sherry) Thomas of Randleman, and Mrs. Larry (Mary) Everhart and Mrs. Larry (Kathy) Beck, both of Thomasville; a son, Clifton D. Jones and his wife, Ann, of Thomasville; three sisters, Mrs. Dolan (Hazel) Armentrout, Mrs. Sam (Dot) Teleshuk and Mrs. Willis (Betty) Maley, all of Thomasville; a brother, Pride Jones of Thomasville; 10 grandchildren; five stepgrandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and three stepgreat-grandchildren.
