Raymond Wallace Campbell, 80, of 423 Nathan Hunt Dr. died Dec. 10, 2000, at High Point Regional Hospital.
He was born Dec. 28, 1919, in Soddy Daisy, Tenn., a son of Oscar and Lula Reno Campbell. He was a veteran of WWII having served in the U.S. Army. He retired from Thomas Built Buses in 1982. He was a member of the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses.
On June 21, 1941, he married the former Freda Marie Giles, who survives of the home.
Also surviving are two daughters, Annette Landreth and husband, Wayne, of Louisville, Ky., and Dawnna Nance and husband, Mike, of Greensboro; two sons, Ronald Ray Campbell and wife, Donna, of High Point and Donald L. Campbell and wife, Pam, of Nashville, Tenn.; one sister, Mrs. Rosa Belle Woodall of Soddy Daisy, Tenn.; nine grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
Funeral will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at Sechrest Archdale Chapel by Rick Binkley and Danny Bland. Interment will be in Guilford Memorial Park. Visitation will be 7-8:30 tonight at the funeral home and other times at 423 Nathan Hunt Dr.

Mrs. Josie Garvin Merwin, 50, of 515-K E. Commerce Ave. died Dec. 9, 2000, at High Point Regional Hospital following hospitalization of eight days.
She was born in High Point, a daughter of Clarence and Josephine Murphy Garvin, who both preceded her in death. She graduated from William Penn High School, “class of 68,” and pursued further studies as a dental hygienist in Atlanta. She was of the Baptist faith.
She also was preceded in death by two brothers, Linnell Murphy and Theodore Murphy.
Surviving are her husband, Douglas Merwin, of High Point; one son, Timothy Garvin of Norfolk, Va.; one brother, Thomas Garvin and wife, Veda; three sisters, Mrs. Eunice Whitworth and husband, Jacob, Mrs. Blanche G. Jackson and Ms. Virginia Garvin, all of High Point; two aunts, Mrs. Corlene Murphy and husband, Leslie, of Lugoff, S.C., and Mrs. Magnolia Murphy of High Point; nieces, nephews, cousins; one sister-in-law, Mrs. Gladys Murphy of Laurelton, N.Y.; and other relatives and friends.
Funeral will be 1 p.m. Tuesday at Haizlip Funeral Chapel by Rev. Lawrence Curtis. Burial will be in Oakwood Memorial Park. Visitation will be 12:30 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral chapel and other times at the residence of Mrs. Blanche Jackson, 1315 Woodhaven Ave.

George Steelman

George “Brother” Lee Steelman, Jr., 61, of 217 Weavil St. died Dec. 9, 2000, at High Point Regional Hospital after an extended illness.
He was born Nov. 23, 1939, in Guilford County, a son of George Lee and Beulah Phillips Steelman Sr., who both preceded him in death. A lifelong resident of High Point, he was owner and operator of Steelman Carpet Installation, member of the First Church of God and veteran of the U.S. Army.
On Dec. 7, 1963, he married Annie “Tiny” Vuncannon, who survives of the home.
Also surviving are one son, Darren Steelman of High Point; two sisters, Mrs. Harvey “Frances” Saintsing of Thomasville and Mrs. Cleon “Barbara” Cribb of Trinity; four brothers, Jerry Steelman and wife, Judy, of Archdale, Rick Steelman and wife, Angelica, of Kernersville, Mark Steelman and wife, Teresa, of Sophia, and Jeff Steelman and wife, Vonda, of Thomasville; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at the chapel of Cumby Family Funeral Service in High Point by the Rev. Hallie Scott and Rev. Wayne Vuncannon. Burial will be in Floral Garden Park Cemetery. Visitation will be 7-8:30 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home and other times at the residence.

Mrs. Ruby Katherine Smith Carver, 82, of Brighton Avenue died Dec. 8, 2000, at her residence after an illness.
She was born June 4, 1918, in Rome, N.Y., a daughter of Arthur and Rena Smith.
Surviving are her husband, Richard J. Carver of the residence; a daughter, Deborah Matthews and her husband, Jim, of Trinity; five grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
Private graveside service will be Tuesday in Floral Garden Park Cemetery.

Miss Myrtle Lee Cates, 96, of SunBridge Care & Rehabilitation For The Triad died Dec. 11, 2000, at High Point Regional Hospital after declining health of three years.
She was born Oct. 12, 1904, in Hillsborough, a daughter of Emmitt Fletcher and Vivian Lee Hicks Cates. She was last employed at Mann’s Drug Store until her retirement in 1965. She was a member of First United Methodist Church, Circle #2 and a member of the Congeniality Club, United Methodist Women, a member of the YWCA, the Agenda Club of the YWCA and Friends of the High Point Theatre.
Surviving are three sisters, Mrs. Ida Oliver and Mrs. Bessie McCarn, both of High Point and Mrs. Jessie Thompson of Hillsborough; a brother, Eural F. Cates of High Point; and several nieces and nephews.
Private graveside service will be held in Oakwood Cemetery by the Rev. Mark Curtis and the Rev. Lee Pollock. Visitation will be 7-8:30 tonight at Sechrest Funeral Service, 1301 E. Lexington Ave., High Point.

Mrs. Pamela Jane Burkardt Hackenberg, 53, of Pennington Ferry Road died Dec. 9, 2000, at her residence after an illness.
She was born July 7, 1947, in Pittsburgh, Pa., a daughter of Robert F. and Donna Lee Murphy Burkardt. She was preceded in death by a sister, Elizabeth Burkardt.
Surviving are her husband, James “Jim” Hackenberg of the residence; two sons, James Kerry Hackenberg of High Point and Gary Lee Hackenberg and his wife, Jill, of Lexington; two brothers, David Burkardt and his wife, Patricia, of Murrysville, Pa., and Robert Burkardt and his wife, Jan, of Lawrenceville, Pa.; two sisters, M. Janet Burkardt Esq. of Pittsburgh, Pa., and Meg L. Burkardt Esq. and her husband, David Ross, of Fox Chapel, Pa.; and three grandchildren, Olivia, Paige and Brooks Hackenberg.

Charles Wallace Hinkle, 74, formerly of Washboard Road died Dec. 10, 2000, at GrayBrier Nursing Center.
He was born March 29, 1926, in High Point, a son of Daniel Elijah and Maude Franklin Hinkle. He retired from Diamond Bedding. He was a U.S. Army veteran, having served during World War II. He was a member of the Woodman of the World. He was preceded in death by two sisters, Lois Goodwin and Mable Martin; two brothers, D.E. Hinkle Jr. and Emmett Hinkle.
Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Shirley Byerly and her husband, Grady, of Old N.C. 109, Lexington, and Miss Vicki Lu Hinkle of the Murdock Center, Butner; a son, Robin Hinkle and his wife, Janet, of Archdale; a special friend, Ms. Louise Davis of Thomasville; and three grandchildren, Sherry Hedrick, Roger Byerly and Brandon Byerly.
Funeral will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at Family Funeral Care-Chapel by the Rev. Gene Little. Entombment will be in Holly Hill Memorial Park Mausoleum. Visitation will be 7-8:30 Tuesday at the funeral home.

Cletus Webster Kennedy, 79, of GrayBrier Nursing and Retirement Center, formerly of 5671 Folwell Drive, died Dec. 10, 2000, at High Point Regional Hospital.
He was born Aug. 15, 1921, in Davidson County, a son of Noah Webster and Argie Vaden Kennedy, who both preceded him in death. He was a resident of the High Point and Archdale vicinity all of his life. He was an automobile mechanic and enjoyed dealing with antique car parts. He was of the Baptist faith. He was married to the former Ruth Johnson, who preceded him in death Aug. 11, 1996. He also was preceded in death by a daughter, Brenda Kennedy; a son, Barry Kennedy; and a sister, Wilma Mae Hayworth.
Surviving are a daughter, Mrs. Terry (Linda) Hall of Archdale; three sons, Randy “Red” Kennedy and his wife, Janice, of Lexington, Larry Kennedy and his wife, Linda, of Pace, Fla., and Wayne Kennedy and his wife, Charlotte, of Colonial Beach, Va.; his stepmother, Gladys Adams of the GrayBrier Nursing Center; three sisters, Cora Ann George, Doris Dorsett and Ruby Melton; nine grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Mrs. Ruth Elizabeth Allred Venable, 74, of 807½ E. Cooksey Drive died Dec. 11, 2000, at her residence.
She was born March 1, 1926, in Randolph County, a daughter of John Wesley Allred and Alice Leonard Allred. She was a homemaker and attended Greenwood Hills Wesleyan Church. On Oct. 10, 1942, she married Wayne H. Venable, who survives of the residence.
Also surviving are her son, Larry Wayne Venable and his wife, Debbie, of Thomasville; two sisters, Mrs. Opal Ann Hoover of Franklinville and Mrs. Arro Mae West of Asheboro; two grandchildren, Larry Wayne Venable II and John Wesley Venable; and a great grandson, Garrett Thomas Venable.
