Gilbert F. Nalley, 48, of 969 Old Fisher Ferry St. went to be with the Lord Jan. 3, 2001, at his residence after a long battle with cancer.
He was born Dec. 5, 1952, in High Point, a son of Ernest W. “Rod” Nalley and Betty Louise Durham Nalley. Prior to his illness, he and his wife drove for Hardy Brothers Trucking in Siloam. He previously worked at High Point Salvage. He was a member of Central Carolina Radio Control Club. He enjoyed being a child with the grandchildren, water sports, cross country traveling and was an avid Elvis fan. He was a member of Charity Baptist Church in Archdale.
Surviving are his loving wife, Wanda Wright Nalley, of the residence; a daughter, Amy Rivenbark and her husband, Kevin, of Wilmington; a stepson, Michael Stephens of Greensboro; a cherished friend and companion, Sweetie Pie; his mother-in-law who was like a mother, Mrs. Minnie Mounce, of High Point; three sisters, Mrs. Lynn Craddock of Archdale, Mrs. Barbara Shelley of Jamestown and Mrs. Lorie Blackmon of Thomasville; a brother, Ernest W. “Woody” Nalley Jr. of Lexington; three precious grandchildren, Brittany Nicole Rivenbark, Michael Scott “Scooter” Rivenbark and Michael “Cookie Man” Stephens Jr.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Harold C. Davis Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Elton Wilborne and the Rev. Jack Johnston III. Burial will be in Holly Hill Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be 7-9 tonight at the funeral home.

Norman A. Rich, 77, died Jan. 4, 2001, at his residence.

Ernest Collins

Ernest T. Collins Sr., 84, died Jan. 1, 2001, at Moses H. Cone Memorial Hospital.
He was born June 11, 1916, in Iredell County, a son of John and Grace Collins, who both preceded him in death. He was a York Rite Mason with Gate City Lodge 694, a member of the Eastern Star Chapter 14, and the United Commercial Travelers since 1942. He was a charter member of Vandalia Presbyterian Church. He also was preceded in death by his brother, Clyde Collins and his sister, Blanch Lakey. He was much loved by his five grandchildren.
Surviving are his wife of 62 years, Polly Collins; a daughter, Phyllis Elaine Cockman and her husband, Frank, of Greenville, S.C.; two sons, Ernest T. Collins Jr. and his wife, Wanda, of Archdale and Tony Michael Collins and his wife, Jan, of Fernadina Beach, Fla.; two sisters, Hazel Cozart of Winston-Salem and Helen Hager of Salisbury; his brother, John Collins of Fuquay Varina; five grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. Friday at Hanes-Lineberry, Sedgefield Chapel. Burial will be in Guilford Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be at the residence.

Howard Wooding Hobson, 76, of Cedar Lane died Jan. 2, 2001, at High Point Regional Hospital.
He was born April 13, 1924, in Glen Ridge, N.J., a son of Russell and Elizabeth Kerr Hobson. He lived in the Randolph County area for several months, and previously had lived in Florida. He was employed by the United States government with the Veterans Administration Hospital. He was a U.S. Army-Air Force veteran, having served during World War II. He attended Cedar Square Friends Meeting. He was married to the former Anna Heater, who survives of the residence.
Also surviving are a daughter, Christine Robertson of Minnesota; two brothers, his twin, John M. Hobson of Florida and Russell B. Hobson of Old Fort; three grandchildren; a niece; and several nephews.
Funeral will be 11 a.m. Friday at Cedar Square Friends Meeting by the Rev. Ben Hurley. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Visitation will be 7-8:30 tonight at Cumby Family Funeral Service, Archdale.

Donald Marsh Jones, 79, of 6276-A Hackberry Drive died Dec. 29, 2000, at Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Fayetteville.
He was a U.S. Army veteran, having served during World War II. He was a member of Disabled American Veterans.
Surviving are his wife, Thelma Moon Jones of the residence; a son, Owen M. Jones of Cherokee; a stepdaughter, Mary Faith Swick of Fayetteville; a stepson, Samuel Leslie Moon of Asheboro; two granddaughters; two stepgrandsons, three stepgranddaughters; and two stepgreat-grandsons.
Graveside services were held Jan. 2 in Sandhills State Veterans Cemetery, Spring Lake, by the Rev. Tim Gore.

Mrs. Debbie Swaim Landreth, 52, of 1912 Middlewood Court, died Jan. 3, 2001, at her residence.
She was born Oct. 14, 1948, in Guilford County, a daughter of Willis G. “Bill” and Betty Willard Swaim. She was a lifelong resident of High Point. She was employed with Oak Hill Friends Meeting as a secretary and also was director of Deep River Friends Meeting Afterschool Care. She was a member of Conrad Memorial Baptist Church.
Surviving are her daughter, Michelle Landreth of High Point; her parents of High Point; a brother, N.Grant Swaim and his wife, Cynthia, of High Point; and a niece, Jamie Swaim of High Point.
Funeral will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Conrad Memorial Baptist Church by the Rev. Marcus Campbell, the Rev. Bob Hiatt and the Rev. Larry Thompson. Burial will be in Guilford Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be 7-8:30 p.m. Friday at Cumby Family Funeral Service, High Point.

Miss Amanda Jeanne Pilson, 19, of 1064 Lake Forest Road died Jan. 2, 2001, at Randolph Hospital as a result of an allergic reaction to medication.
She was a graduate of Southwestern Randolph High School. She was a sophomore at Appalachian State University where she was enrolled in the premedical program and aspiring to be a pharmacist. She was employed with Prevo Drugs of Asheboro. She was an active member of First Baptist Church where she was involved in youth missions.
Surviving are her parents, Craig and Jeanne Pilson, both of the residence; her sister, Sheila Pilson of the residence; maternal grandmother, Pat Long of Asheboro; maternal grandfather, Billy Long of High Point; and her fiancé, Scott Whitaker of Asheboro.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. Friday at First Baptist Church by the Rev. John S. Rogers, the Rev. Mark Hall, the Rev. Lester Woodard, and the Rev. Terrell Watts. Visitation will be 6-8:30 tonight at Pugh Funeral Home, Asheboro.

Clarence “Tom” Swing, 84, of Becks Church Road died at 8:25 p.m. Jan. 1, 2001, at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem after one week of illness.

K.A. “Joe” Tedder passed away Jan. 1, 2001.
He was born Oct. 30, 1922, in Rockwood, Tenn., a son of Thomas Charles Tedder and Ruth LaRue Tedder. He retired from a long executive career in the textile field. He honorably served his country during World War II with the 11th Armored Division in Europe. He attended the University of Tennessee in Knoxville and the University of California in Berkley. He was a devoted husband and father, avid golfer, lover of music and life. He was a lifelong member of Disciples of Christ Christian Church.
Surviving are his wife, Elizabeth Nickle Tedder; two daughters, Mrs. Robert (Jodie) Stamey and Mrs. Barry (Claudia) Owens; a brother, Fred Tedder; a sister, Ellen Crowther; three grandchildren, Claire Dalton, Travis Owens and Brandon Owens; and two great-grandchilden, Megan Rembert and Timothy Dalton.
Memorial service will be 2 p.m. Sunday at United Community Church.

Clyde Turpin

Clyde Lee Turpin, 82, of 805 Country Club Drive died Jan. 2, 2001, after a lengthy illness.
He was born March 22, 1918, in Guilford County, a son of Numa E. and Sally Lee Watkins Turpin, who both preceded him in death. He was a lifelong resident of High Point except for a short time during World War II when he worked in the shipyard at Newport News, Va. He was married 64 years to Mary Katherine “Kat” Pepper Turpin, who preceded him in death June 1, 2000. He and his wife operated Turpin Electric Co. until 1986. He also was preceded in death by five brothers, Elmer Turpin, Eldon Turpin, Basil Turpin, Bill Turpin and Jack Turpin.
He was a member of Emerywood Baptist Church. He was a member of the Loyal Order of Moose Lodge, High Point Chapter 693 since 1962, a member of Moose Legion 158, Tar Heel N.C. since 1965, and a life member of Elks Lodge 1155, High Point Chapter since 1983.
Surviving are a daughter, Sharon T. McCarn of High Point; a grandson, Donald “Skeeter” Scott II and his wife, Bobbie, of Burlington; and five great-grandchildren, Colby, Ross, Daylon, Zachary and Holden.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. Saturday at the chapel of Cumby Family Funeral Service, High Point, by the Rev. Mark E. Smith. Burial will be in Floral Garden Park Cemetery. Visitation will be 7-8:30 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.
