Jesse Q. Cheves, 83, a resident of 8 Asheville St., Ocean Isle Beach, formerly of Jay Kat Lane, Jamestown, died Jan. 9, 2001, at Cyprus Point Rehabilitation Center.
He was born Oct. 14, 1917, in Columbia, S.C., the son of Jesse Sr. and Minnie Skeens Cheves. He was the former owner and operator of Jamestown Drill Supply. He was a member of Sedgefield Baptist Church and the Numa F. Reid Masonic Lodge #344. He was a U.S. Army veteran, serving his country during World War II.
Surviving are his wife, Kathelene Stiles Cheves, of the home; three daughters, Donna McLauchlin and her husband, Mike, of Jamestown, Laura Craven and her husband, Bobby, of Oak Ridge and Lisa Rumph and her husband, Kenny, of Columbia, S.C.; two sons, Ronald Cheves and his wife, Julie, of Charlotte and Robert Cheves and his wife, JoAnn, of Houston, Texas; two brothers, Bill Cheves and Maurice Cheves, both of High Point; one sister, Margaret Ingram of High Point; ten grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Sedgefield Baptist Church by the Rev. Otis Davis and the Rev. Andy Royals. Burial with Masonic rites will be in Guilford Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be 7-9 Friday at Harold C. Davis Funeral Home and other times at the home of Donna and Mike McLauchlin, 6001 Jay Kat Lane, Jamestown.

Charles Adrian Cooper, 46, died Jan. 10, 2001.
Graveside service will be 3 p.m. Friday at Science Hill Friends Meeting Cemetery. There will not be a visitation.

Kenneth Culler
Thomasville
Kenneth Odell Culler, 51, of 22 Landon Lane died Jan. 9, 2001.
He was born Feb. 12, 1949, in Guilford County to Herman and Thelma Lee Culler. He owned and operated Culler Auto Glass on English Road in High Point. He had served in the United States Army and was a member of Hillcrest Baptist Church. He was married to the former Rhonda Christian, who survives of the residence.
Also surviving are two sons, Scott Culler of Lexington and Shane Culler of Thomasville; a daughter, Kristy Putman of Kernersville; a step-son, Shawn Stacey of the residence; his parents of Kernersville; two brothers, Doug Culler and Don Culler, both of Kernersville; and two grandchildren, Haley Culler and Jaycee Putman.
He is loved and will be missed by his family and friends.
Funeral will be 11 a.m. Friday at the Chapel of Cumby Family Funeral Service in High Point by Doug Culler. Burial will be in Lebanon United Methodist Church Cemetery. Visitation will be 7-8:30 tonight at the funeral home and other times at the residence of his parents, 9833 McNeill Road, Kernersville.

Mary Davis

Ms. Mary Elizabeth “Betsy” Davis, 57, died Jan. 6, 2001, at New Hanover Regional Medical Center in Wilmington.
Memorial service will be private at a later date.
She was born Jan. 10, 1943, in High Point, a daughter of Edwin J. Davis of High Point and May Williams Woodell of Jamestown, both preceded her in death.
Surviving are a brother, Edwin Michael Davis of Rocky Point; a sister, Kathy Davis Abrahamson of McLeansville; four nieces and nephews; and numerous loved ones.

The Rev. Carol Lee Morgan Gallimore, 62, died Jan. 10, 2001.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Ridge Funeral Home Chapel. Visitation will be 7-9 p.m. Friday and other times at the home of Linda Camp, 1717 Third St., Asheboro.
Thurman Horney
Greensboro
Thurman Adair Horney, 80, of 2107 Adams Farm Parkway died Jan. 10, 2001, at Wesley Long Hospital.
He was born June 17, 1920, in High Point, the son of Paul S. Horney and Flora Mann Horney Bobo. He attended High Point schools, graduating in 1940 from what is now High Point Central High School. After attending Duke University for a year, he joined the United States Air Force. He served as a flight instructor for B-17s and ferried planes to Britain.
After leaving the service he returned to High Point and graduated from High Point University. He re-entered the service and was sent to the Philippines. He returned from his second tour of duty and entered George Peabody University in Nashville and completed his master’s degree in school administration and physical education. He went to Houston, Texas, where he taught physical education and coached football at the Kincaid School.
When he returned to North Carolina, he continued his career in the field of education. He taught physical education, coached football and served as an assistant principal in the Greensboro school system before resigning to become principal in Liberty, where he coached football, basketball, baseball and taught driver education in addition to his duties as principal. He came home to Guilford County in 1958 when he became principal at McLeansville School.
After eight years at that post he became vocational technical director at Davidson County Community College, and later moved to Tarboro to become the first president of Edgecomb Technical Community College. In 1970 he became assistant superintendent in Richmond County. He returned to Guilford County in 1972 to become night dean at Guilford Technical Institute from which he retired in 1976.
He was a member of Jamestown United Methodist Church. On April 4, 1958, he married Peggy Campbell, who survives of the home.
Surviving in addition to his wife are a daughter, Mrs. Lora Deans and her husband, Russ, of Durham; two sons, Thurman Horney Jr. of Garner and Chuck Horney and his wife, Lynda, of Winston-Salem; “Pop Pop” also leaves his grandchildren, Matthew, John, Elizabeth, Kathryn, Cole and Kyle.
Funeral will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Jamestown United Methodist Church by Dr. C.M. Worth, the Rev. Bob Mick and the Rev. Howard Allred. Burial will be in Oakwood Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be 7-8:30 p.m. Friday at Sechrest Funeral Home on East Lexington Avenue.

Mrs. Jewell Sexton Cranford, 93, of Britthaven of Davidson Nursing Home, formerly of Stone Street, died Jan. 9, 2001, at the nursing home.
Funeral will be 11 a.m. today at Memorial United Methodist Church by Kyles Y. Wallace and the Rev. Thomas Griffis. Burial will be in Holly Hill Memorial Park Cemetery.

Ms. Della C. Curry, 81, of 1405 Wendell Ave. died Jan. 11, 2001, at Wesleyan Arms, where she had been a patient nine months.

Ms. Dorothy Leonard Dillard, 68, of S. Main Street died Jan. 8, 2001, at Lexington Memorial Hospital after a serious illness of one week.

Billy Joe Fritts, 65, of 122 Cornell St. died Jan. 10, 2001, at High Point Regional Hospital.
He was born Nov. 30, 1935, in Davidson County, a son of Hoke and Annie Sue Weaver Fritts. He had lived most of his life in High Point.
Surviving are a daughter, Brandy Joann Anderson of Charlotte; a son, Billy R. Fritts of Sophia; two stepsons, Tommy Joe Fritts of Jacksonville, Fla. and Gary E. Fritts of Thomasville; two stepdaughters, Tammy R. Sechrist of Thomasville and Karen D. Adams of High Point; a brother, Donald Ray Fritts of Sophia; and several grandchildren.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. Saturday at the chapel of Cumby Family Funeral Service, High Point, by Chaplain Richard Tucker. Burial will be in Shiloh United Methodist Church Cemetery in Lexington. Visitation will be 7-8:30 tonight at the funeral home.
