Rev. William Lewis
High Point
The Rev. William C. Lewis, 55, went to be with his Lord Jan. 24, 2001.
He was born Jan. 20, 1946, in Thomasville, a son of William Dolin and Beatrice Hoskins Lewis, who both preceded him in death. He was educated in the Thomasville City schools, attended Bible college and was called to the ministry at age 21. He was an ordained minister with Christian Missionary Alliance Church and pastored three churches. He was a member of Evangelical Holiness Missionary Association where he served as vice-president and director of camp missions.
He was a loving, kind, devoted and gentle man, full of compassion and concern for everyone with whom he came in contact. His desire was to please God in every aspect of his life, leading others to Christ, encouraging and helping others through life’s struggles.
On Oct. 4, 1986, he was married to Diane Pasour. After moving to High Point, they joined Community Bible Church, where he served his Lord in many ways. He and his wife served as missionaries with Reciprocal Ministries International from 1991 until 1996 and was recently accepted as a missionary with Pioneers Africa, with whom he had worked for the past four years building churches, digging wells and helping provide much needed medical care for the country of Ghana, West Africa.
He was preceded in death by his sister, Josephine Fant.
He leaves to cherish his memory. his loving and devoted wife; four sons, Darryl Lewis and his wife, Patty, of High Point, Gerald Lewis, Brian Lewis and Germaine Lewis, all of Thomasville; four daughters, Daphne Foster of Thomasville, Carla Foley of Kannapolis, Linda Hughes of Thomasville and Donna Pasour of Kernersville; 13 grandchildren; and a great-grandchild; three brothers, the Rev. David Lewis and his wife, Margaret, of West River, Md., the Rev. Vernon Lewis and his wife, Ruth, and the Rev. Warren Lewis and his wife, Kimberly, all of Thomasville; and seven sisters, Essie Cannon and her husband, William, of Lanham, Md., Olivia Rice of Baltimore, Hatti Jackson and her husband, Robert, of Atlanta, Ruby Whitsett and her husband, Norris, Thelma Coard and her husband, Julius, and Delma Hairston and her husband, Lawrence, all of High Point, and Cassandra Moore of Thomasville.
A celebration of life service will be 3 p.m. Sunday at Community Bible Church, 4125 Johnson St., by the Rev. Bill Simpson and the Rev. David Lewis. A private graveside service will be in Carolina Biblical Gardens. Visitation will be 7-8:30 tonight at Cumby Family Funeral Service, High Point.

Dylan Loveland
Randleman
Dylan Jefferson Loveland, 2-day-old infant son of Chad and Gina Loveland, died Jan. 22, 2001.
Graveside service will be 3:30 p.m. Sunday in Randolph Memorial Park Cemetery.
Ridge Funeral Home, Asheboro, is in charge of arrangements.

Grace Perkins
Lexington
Mrs. Grace Smith Perkins, 90, of Holly Grove Road died Jan. 25, 2001, at Lexington Health Care after an extended illness.
Funeral will be 4 p.m. Saturday at Mt. Tabor United Church of Christ. Visitation will be 6:30-8:30 tonight at Davidson Funeral Home and other times at the residence.

Howard Rieves
Greensboro
Howard Rieves died Jan. 25, 2001.

Roy Ryan
Greensboro
Roy Howard Ryan, 84, of 5705 Anson Road began life eternal Jan. 23, 2001.
He was born Oct. 6, 1916, a son of Charlie and Effie Sullivan Ryan of the Sumner area. He graduated from Sumner High School. On Aug. 5, 1942, he was married to the love of his life, Adelaide Callahan, who preceded him in death May 6, 1984. He was a loyal member of Sedgefield Presbyterian Church and was a former deacon. He had many friends and neighbors who enjoyed his subtle sense of humor. His presence was sought after as he delighted many with his stories, his whistle and his mischievous smile.
He was employed 35 years with Jackson Beauty Supply and earned the high respect of employees and customers alike. He began while he was in high school, working in every capacity until he became president and finally retired in 1978. His reputation in the business was that of an extremely hard worker, being fair minded and productive. He led Jackson Beauty Supply in receiving the industry’s highest honors. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Carolyn Ryan July 11, 1998.
He was a beloved husband, father, grandfather and friend to many who will miss him. He was young at heart. He was a man of God and of family. His remaining family rejoice with the assurance that he is with the Lord and loved ones.
Surviving are his daughter, Mrs. Jim (Janie Ryan) Crouch Jr.; his five grandchildren who were especially devoted to their Pa Pa, Lisa Jones of the residence, Andy Jones of Wesley Chapel, Fla., Bo Crouch, John and Addie Crouch of Burlington; his companion and loving caregiver of 17 years, Lisa Jones; and two sisters, Ina Grace Prose of Tennessee and Tava Daughters of Long Beach.
Funeral will be 11 a.m. today at Sedgefield Presbyterian Church. Burial will be in Guilford Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be at the residence.

James Spivey
Thomasville
James Thurman Spivey, 55, died Jan. 24, 2001, at Community General Hospital.
Memorial service will be held at a later date. Visitation will be at the residence of his daughter, 1259 Noahtown Road.
J.C. Green & Sons are in charge of arrangements.

Hovis Spurrier

Hovis Edgar Spurrier, 79, of Oak Avenue died at 8:55 p.m. Jan. 24, 2001, at Brian Center Nursing Home.
Funeral will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Davidson Funeral Home Lexington Chapel. Visitation will be 10-11 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home.

Billy Stephens

Billy “Bill” Joe Stephens, 69, died Jan. 24, 2001.
Funeral will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Ridge Funeral Home Chapel. Visitation will be 7-9 tonight at the funeral home and other times at the residence.

Matthew Strader
Mt. Holly
Matthew David Strader, 9-month-old son of Michael and Lisa Pugh Strader of 101 Fites Creek Road, died Jan. 25, 2001, at Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte.
Surviving are his parents; a sister, Krystal Dawn Strader of the residence; a brother, Phillip Michael Strader of the residence; his paternal grandmother, Helene Strader of Thomasville; his maternal grandparents, Arnold and Peggy Pugh of Trinity; and his paternal great-grandmother, Maria Kaiser of Stuttgart, Germany.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Woodlawn Chapel of Woodlawn Funeral Home by the Rev. Barney Pierce. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery. Visitation will be 12:30-2 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home.

Mrs. Katherine Hardin “Kitty” Daniels, 92, died Jan. 30, 2001, at Britthaven of Guilford in Greensboro.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Lebanon United Methodist Church, 119 W. River Drive. Visitation will be Thursday after the service at the church fellowship hall.

Eddie Davis

Eddie Davis, 73, died Jan. 29, 2001.

Phelps DeSpain
High Point
Phelps Spencer DeSpain, 43, of 1716 Windsor Drive died Jan. 29, 2001.
He was born Dec. 9, 1957, in Palm Beach, Fla., a son of Charles R. and Marilyn Butler DeSpain Jr. He was a resident of High Point since 1991. He graduated from Kubasaski High School in Okinawa, Japan, in 1975. He served in the U.S. Navy with the Navy Seals and was medically retired in 1979. He attended the University of Louisville and graduated from Jefferson Community College with a bachelor degree in graphics. He was a freelance photographer. He was most recently employed at Westchester Cinema Theatre. He was a member of First Presbyterian Church, a former associate deacon and was active in the Sunday school department. On Jan. 20, 1990, he married Deborah Bartlett, who survives of the residence.
Also surviving are two daughters, Elise Patricia and Spencer Ashley DeSpain, both of the residence; his mother of Louisville, Ky.; three sisters, Mrs. Helen Keaton and her husband, Forrest, of Jacksonville, Ill., Mrs. Priscilla Hill and her husband, Rick, of Charlotte and Mrs. Kelly Williams and her husband, John, of Cincinnati, Ohio; and a brother, David DeSpain and his wife, Alicia, of Charlotte.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. Thursday at First Presbyterian Church by the Rev. Harry C. Cole and the Rev. Lisa M. Mullen. Burial will be with Military Honors in Floral Garden Park Cemetery. The body will be at Sechrest Funeral Home, E. Lexington Ave., until placed in the church 30 minutes prior to the service. Visitation will be 7-8:30 tonight at the funeral home.
Pallbearers will be David DeSpain, Forrest Keaton, John Williams, Randall Bartlett, Jeff Bartlett and Mark Bartlett.
Memorials may be directed to First Presbyterian Church, 918 N. Main St., High Point, N.C. 27262 or the charity of the donor’s choice.

Rev. Henry Hicks
High Point
The Rev. Henry James Hicks of 1028 Montlieu Ave. died Jan. 26, 2001, at High Point Regional Hospital.
He was a native of Marlboro County, S.C. He was an employee of Leggett & Platt Inc. for many years. He was associate pastor of Living Water Baptist Church of which Aldoph Thomas is the founder.
Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Carolyn B. Hicks, of the residence; his daughter, Nicole Patrice Hicks of High Point; his son, Tony Sanders of Thomasville; a brother, Mr. Willie J. Hicks of High Point; a sister, the Rev. Addie Collins of High Point; and a grandchild.
Funeral will be 3 p.m. today at Living Water Baptist Church by the Rev. T. Johnson. Burial will be in Oakwood Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be 2:30 to 3 p.m. today at the church prior to the service.
Hargett Funeral Service Inc. is in charge of arrangements.
