Mrs. Vera Nell Wafford Everhart, 79, of 606 Peeeler St. died Jan. 31, 2001.
Graveside service will be 2 p.m. Saturday in Forest Hill Memorial Park. Visitation will be 7-9 tonight at Piedmont Funeral Home and other times at the residence of her daughter, 286 Horse Haven Drive.
John Hart
High Point
John Ronald Hart, 66, of 4422 Singletree Lane died Feb. 1, 2001, at Evergreens Nursing Center.
He was born Jan. 17, 1935, in Middlesboro, Ky., a son of John Rhea and Lois Bailey Hart. He was formerly of Knoxville, Tenn., before moving to High Point in 1966. He was owner and operator of Hart Construction Co. Inc. and was formerly employed with Alma Desk Co. He was a member of Christ United Methodist Church, where he served as a former Sunday school teacher, former choir member and former president of the United Methodist Men.
He was a member of American Business Men’s Association, former commissioner of Little League Baseball in High Point, former State Scribe for the Order of Demolay, and a member of the High Point Elks Lodge. He served in the U.S. Army Reserve. On March 24, 1956, he was married to the former Patricia Robertson, who survives of the residence. He was preceded in death by a sister, Jenny Reid.
Also surviving are a daughter, Candace “Candy” Hart Burrow and her husband, Scott, of High Point; a son, Brian Russell “Rusty” Hart of Charlotte; three grandchildren, Brittany Camile Burrow, Megan Scott Burrow and Brian Christopher Burrow; and three sisters, Yvonne Sorey, Anne Hart and Lynn Bowlby, all of Knoxville.
Memorial service will be 3 p.m. Saturday at Christ United Methodist Church by Dr. Glenn L. Myers Jr. and the Rev. Lloyd G. Hunsucker. Visitation will be after the memorial service.

William Hester
High Point
William Harry Hester, 79, of 602 Westwood Ave. died at 2:03 a.m. Feb. 1, 2001, at High Point Regional Hospital after declining health of several months.
He was born Jan. 25, 1922, in Fries, Va., a son of William W. and Hallie Moran Hester. He was a resident of High Point most of his life and retired from Lilly Co. He was a U.S. Army veteran, having served during World War II. He was an avid golfer. He was a member of First Wesleyan Church, Sunday school, usher and greeter. On Jan. 18, 1941, he was married to Sylvia Snead, who survives of Wesleyan Arms. He was preceded in death by a son, Richard Neal Hester.
Also surviving are two sons, Edward L. Hester and his wife, Geneva, of 164 Richview Circle and Gary L. Hester and his wife, Doris, of 101 S. Cameo Drive, Thomasville; seven grandchildren; a great-grandchild; and a sister, Mrs. Margaret Smith and her husband, Frank, of 1907-T N. Centennial St.
Funeral will be 11 a.m. Saturday at the chapel of Cumby Family Funeral Service, High Point, by the Rev. Carroll M. Upton and the Rev. Aron P. Willis. Burial will be in Floral Garden Park Cemetery. Visitation will be 7-8:30 tonight at the funeral home and other times at the residence of his son on Richview Circle.

Curtis Lee
Emporia, Va.
Curtis Edward Lee died Jan. 27, 2001, in Richmond.
He was a native of Thomasville, N.C. He was a retired government teacher with Greensville County School System after 30 years of service. He coached football and track for more than 20 years. Upon his retirement, he was an adjunct instructor in psychology at Southside Virginia Community College. He taught government class in the school-after-school program in the Greensville County School System.
He was an active community leader, serving on the following boards, commissions and committees: Community Youth Center board of directors, Greensville zoning board of appeals, Greensville County draft board, Crater Planning Commission, Greensville County Highway Safety Commission, Extravanza 2000 committee, Greensville County transportation committee, Family YMCA of Emporia-Greensville Committee, Greensville-Emporia Coalition for Delaying Parenthood in Youth committee, Citizens United To Preserve Greensville, the Greensville County training school committee, Concerned Citizens Committee, Neighborhood Watch committee, Greensville County Retired Teachers Association, Greensville County Credit Union and the Virginia High School Coaches Association.
He was a member of the NAACP, and active member of Livingstone College alumni and a proud member of Phi Beta Sigma fraternity.
Surviving are his wife, Margaret Telfair Lee; two daughters, Tonya Lee Holt of Rochester, Minn., and Kimberly Devon of Richmond; a brother, Harold Lee of E. St. Louis, Ill.; three sisters, Edna Jean Shavis and Linda Lee, both of Thomasville, and Carolyn Russell of Hickory, N.C.; a son-in-law, Robert Holt; two brothers-in-law, Charles Shavis and Robert Russell; and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
Funeral will be 1 p.m. Saturday at Royal Baptist Church. Visitation will be 6-8 tonight at Pearson Funeral Home, 556 Halifax St. in Emporia. Another funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Sunday at Central United Methodist Church, Thomasville by the Rev. Faye Herbin. Burial will be in Carolina Biblical Gardens, Jamestown, N.C.

Mrs. Shirley Jean Leonard, 57, of Box 10099 Old U.S. 64 East died Jan. 31, 2001, at Community General Hospital in Thomasville.

W. Mayhew Sr.

William Roy Mayhew Sr., 84, of 3817 Pineview Ave. died at 6:54 p.m. Jan. 31, 2001, at High Point Regional Hospital after several months of declining health.
He was born Dec. 4, 1916, in Pittsylvania County, Va. He was a resident of High Point most of his life. He was formerly employed with Ilderton Dodge and Piedmont Wholesale. He was a U.S. Army veteran, having served during World War II. He was a member of First Church of God. He was married to Nora Carrick, who preceded him in death. He later married Elizabeth Pollard Staton Mayhew, who survives of the residence. He also was preceded in death by a sister, Mrs. Ellen Parrish, and his mother, Mrs. Josephine Mayhew.
Also surviving are a son, Bill Mayhew Jr. and his wife, Helen, of Charlotte; a stepson, Walter Staton and his wife, Delores, of Trinity; three grandchildren, Brian Mayhew and his wife, Holly, Karen Mayhew and Mark Staton and his wife, Angel; three great-grandchildren, Anthony Mayhew, Britney Mayhew and Amanda Staton; and two sisters, Mrs. Mae Parker and Mrs. Nellie Slay, both of High Point.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. Sunday at the chapel of Cumby Family Funeral Service, High Point, by the Rev. Hallie Scott. Burial will be in Pleasant Grove United Methodist Church Cemetery with military rites conducted by the Randolph County Honor Guard. Visitation will be 7-8:30 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home.
Pallbearers will be Dalton Hulin, Mark Staton, Brian Mayhew, Mark Anthony, Al Slay and Walter Staton.

Mildred Motsinger

Mrs. Mildred Lucille Craven Motsinger, 96, of 1387 Abbotts Creek Church Road, died Jan. 30, 2001, in Long Beach, Calif.
She was born Oct. 30, 1904, in Davidson County, a daughter of Evanderman Monroe and Eliza Jane Wyre Craven. She was a member of Abbotts Creek Primitive Baptist Church. On April 11, 1925, she was married to Clyde William Motsinger, who preceded her in death Aug. 21, 1996. She also was preceded in death by her son, Danny Motsinger.
Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Doris M. Walker of Lakewood, Calif., and Mrs. Nancy Boger and her husband, William, of Raleigh; two sons, W. Leon Motsinger and his wife, Lucille, of Kernersville, and James M. “Jim” Motsinger of Wilmington; a sister, Mrs. Mary Frances Craven of High Point; her sister-in-law, Mrs. Ellen Craven; 14 grandchildren; and 22 great-grandchildren.
Funeral will be 11 a.m. Saturday at J.C. Green & Sons Funeral Home, Wallburg Chapel, by Elder Steve Nichols and Elder J.A. Langham. Burial will be in Abbotts Creek Missionary Baptist Church. Visitation will be 7-9 tonight at the funeral home.
Pallbearers will be Steve, Craig, Kent, Tim, Mike and Doug Motsinger, Billy, Kevin and Chris Boger.
Devoe Murchison

Devoe Lenwood Murchison, 81, of 4505 Hoover Hill Road died Jan. 31, 2001, at High Point Regional Hospital.
He was born March 22, 1919, in Chatham County, a son of Ralph and Myrtle Culberson Murchison. He was a resident of Trinity for 55 years. He was a U.S. Army veteran, having served and fought in numerous battles during World War II. He retired from Clarendon Industries. He was a member of Poplar Ridge Friends Meeting and the Christian Fellowship Sunday school class. He was formerly active with the Hillsville Civitan Club. On April 19, 1941, he married the former Rachel Thompson, who survives of the residence. He was preceded in death by two sisters.
Also surviving are two daughters, Lois Welborn and her husband, Richard, of Trinity, and Jois Roach and her husband, Wayne, of Thomasville; a son, Lynn Murchison and his wife, Janet, of Trinity; a brother, Ralph Murchison of Burlington; a sister, Shelby Murchison of Burlington; eight grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and a great-great-grandchild.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Poplar Ridge Friends Meeting by the Rev. Randal A. Quate. Burial will be in Poplar Ridge Friends Cemetery. Visitation will be 7-8:30 tonight at Cumby Family Funeral Service, Archdale, and other times at the residence.
Pallbearers will be Harold Monroe, Charles Monroe, Leon Monroe, Kenneth Monroe, Edwin Monroe and Jerry Webb.

William Barnell Norton died Jan. 30, 2001.
Surviving are Mrs. Geraldine Norton of the residence; four sons, William Norton Jr. of Clementon, N.J., Gerry Norton, Larry (Janice) Norton and Richard Norton; four daughters, Ms. Karen Norton, Ms. Cathy Norton, Ms. Sharon Norton and Ms. Terri Norton, all of High Point; 13 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Carl Herman “C.H.” Teague Jr., 83, of 4315 Abbotts Creek Church Road died Feb. 1, 2001, at High Point Care Center.
He was born July 7, 1917, in Guilford County, a son of Carl H. and Fleta Davis Teague Sr. He retired from Craftsman Upholster Shop as owner and operator in April 2000. He also retired from Carson Furniture. He was a U.S. Army veteran, having served during World War II.
Surviving are his wife, Bertha Bodenhamer Teague of the residence; two daughters, Mrs. Joanne Causey and her husband, Boyd, of Greensboro, and Mrs. Linda Buchannan and her husband, Jerry, of High Point; a stepdaughter, Ms. Sharon Dulski of St. Marys, Pa.; a stepson, David Swaim and his wife, Mary, of Wake Forest; and three grandchildren, Marnie Ellenburger, Brian Buchannan and Wendy Weiss.
Memorial graveside service will be 2 p.m. Saturday in Abbotts Creek Missionary Baptist Church Cemetery by the Rev. Lee Stocks and the Rev. Jack Rose. Visitation will be held after the service in the parlor of Abbotts Creek Missionary Baptist Church.
