William Oliver Spencer III, 74, of 701 Glen Echo Trail, died Feb. 13, 2000, at Forsyth Medical Center after a brief illness.
He was born April 8, 1926, in Winston-Salem, a son of William Oliver Spencer Jr. and Fay Huntley Spencer Ives, who both preceded him in death. He attended the local public schools and graduated from High Point High School after his family moved to High Point. He completed a year at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
He entered the U.S. Army in May 1944 and served in the military operations in the Southwest Pacific Area and Japan. He joined General Douglas MacArthur’s Headquarters in Manila and was in the Advanced Echelon that landed in Japan 10 days before the surrender. He witnessed the signing of the Japanese Surrender in Tokyo Bay from a ship anchored beside the USS Missouri. Gen. MacArthur gave him a field commission of second lieutenant and personally pinned on his Silver Bars. He was awarded the Bronze Star for his outstanding service with the Advanced Echelon in the Adjutant General’s office in Japan. He was honorably discharged in November 1946.
He returned to Winston-Salem and worked with his uncle, John Kerr Spencer Sr., at the Winston Steam Laundry. After 19 years, he opened his own business, a franchise of Calico Corners, selling decorative fabric. Three months after a fire in January 1987, he reopened the business as Fingertips and retired in September 1988. His life hobbies were family, gardening and classical music.
Surviving are his wife of 47½ years, Mrs. Nell Penn Watt Spencer of the residence; a son, William Oliver Spencer IV and his wife, Laura Spencer Lee, of Charlotte; a daughter, Sallie Spencer Rice and her husband, Thomas B. III, of Winston-Salem; four grandchildren he loved very much, William Spencer V, Mary Carter Lee Spencer, Catherine Penn Rice and Virginia Neil Rice; a sister, Mary Jo Spencer Gibson and her husband, Raleigh J. III, of Walnut Cove; a half brother, David Gray Spencer of Richmond, Va.; his stepmother, Caroline Gray Spencer of Winston-Salem; and beloved nieces and nephews.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. Thursday at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church. Burial will be in Forsyth Memorial Park.

Lewis Nathaniel Wilkes, 49, died Feb. 12, 2001, at a hospital in Wadeboro.
Funeral will be 1:30 p.m. Saturday at Friendship Baptist Church. Visitation will be 1-1:30 p.m. at the Church Saturday and other times at the residence of his mother, Pearl Davis, 119 Smith St.

Mrs. Ruby Emily Sowers Workman, 86, of Roosevelt Street died at 3:25 p.m. Feb. 14, 2001, at Liberty Woods Nursing Center.
She was born Feb. 17, 1914, in Davidson County, a daughter of Albert Sowers and Elena Mae Beck Sowers, who both preceded her in death. She retired from Amazon Cotton Mill and attended Southside Baptist Church.
Surviving are a brother, Oscar A. Sowers of Asheboro; two granddaughters, Julie Griffin and Cheryl Ingram, both of New Bern; and a grandson, Steve Ingram of Houston.
Graveside service will be 2 p.m. Friday in Holly Hill Memorial Park Cemetery by the Rev. Ronald Blakley. Visitation will be 7-9 tonight at J.C. Green & Sons Funeral Home, Thomasville.

Betty Briles

Mrs. Betty Mock Hilton Briles, 70, of 3375 Broken Oak Road died Feb. 9, 2001, at 3 p.m. in Community General Hospital.
She was born June 15, 1930, in Forsyth County, daughter of the late Virgil M. Hilton and Mabel Westmoreland Hilton. She was a homemaker and was a member of Zion United Church of Christ and a member of the Fellowship Sunday School Class at the church. She was married Dec. 19, 1953, to Marion S. Briles, who survives of the home.
Also surviving are her stepmother, Nova Hilton of Thomasville; three sons, David N. Briles and his wife, Carolyn, of Monroe, Ga., Joseph A. Briles and his wife, Patty, of Smithfield, N.C., and Jonathan H. Briles and his wife, Sherry, of Thomasville; one brother, Melvin Hilton of Nashville, Tenn.; and four grandchildren, Michael Briles, Megan Briles, Stephanie Briles and Beth Briles.
Funeral service will be 1 p.m. Monday in Zion United Church of Christ with Dr. Joe D. Coltrane officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. The body will be placed in the church 30 minutes prior to the service. The family will be at J.C. Green & Sons Funeral Home in Thomasville from 7-9 tonight and other times at the home of her stepmother, Mrs. Nova Hilton, 7043 Midway School Road, Thomasville, N.C. 27360.

Lila Brown

Mrs. Lila Butler Brown of 1712-D N. Centennial St. died Feb. 10, 2001, at High Point Regional Hospital.
She was born June 15, 1924, in High Point to John M. and Pearl Jones Butler. She was a lifelong resident of High Point and was educated in local schools. For 15 years she worked as a service representative for North State Telephone Company. She retired in 1985 from Medical Center Internists, P.A., after 15 years full time and approximately two years of part-time employment. She was also employed part time for Westwood Surgical Associates and retired in 1992 due to health reasons. She was a member of Christ United Methodist Church and the McFarland Sunday School Class. She also served as president of the Young of Heart Club, was on the Intercessory Prayer Group and was a member of the Joyful Sounds Senior Band. On Nov. 8, 1943, she was married to Jack W. Brown, who preceded her in death on Oct. 28, 1991.
Surviving is a son, Jimmy D. Brown of Chapel Hill; a granddaughter, Erin Elizabeth Brown of N. Myrtle Beach, S.C.; two sisters, Mrs. Forrest (Edith) Hodgin of 900 Eastchester Drive in High Point and Mrs. Lester (Margaret) Campbell of Yorktown, Texas; several nieces and nephews; many friends whom she loved dearly; and a sister-in-law, Becky Cook of Roaring Gap, who was very special to her.
Memorial service will be 2 p.m. Monday at Christ United Methodist Church by the Revs. Dr. Glenn L. Myers Jr., Lloyd G. Hunsucker and Brian Cornell. A private committal service will be at a later date. Visitation will be 7-8:30 tonight at Cumby Family Funeral Service in High Point.

Rayvone Demetrius Cullins, 32, died Feb. 7, 2001.
Surviving are his mother, Ms. Gloria Cullins of the home; a daughter, Erica Williams of High Point; four sisters, Katina Cullins, Tonya Rivers, Vickie Davis, all of High Point, and Tonya Hoggs of New Jersey; three brothers, Daryl Cullins and Bobby Wilson of High Point and Terrance Jackson of New Jersey; his maternal grandmother, Margaret Stroud of High Point; and his paternal grandmother, Flora Anderson of High Point.
Funeral service will be 1 p.m. Monday at Emmanuel Baptist Church. The body will be placed in the church one hour before the service. Family visitation will be 12:30-1 p.m.

Mrs. Frances Mae Prater Heninger, 76, of Hamilton Road died Feb. 10 in Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center.
Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at Davidson Funeral Home, Lexington Chapel. Visitation will be 6-8 Monday night at Davidson Funeral Home and other times at the home.
Marie Marsh

Mrs. Marie Darby Marsh. 73, a resident of High Point, died Feb. 10, 2001, at High Point Regional Hospital
She was born April 16, 1927, in High Point, a daughter to William Clint and Idell Sanders Darby. She had been a lifelong resident of High Point and was a member of Wesley Memorial United Methodist Church and the Martha Service Guild of the church. She was a Gray Lady of High Point Regional Hospital. ON Dec. 15, 1945, she was married to G. Reid Marsh, who preceded her in death in January, 2000.
Surviving are a son and daughter-in-law, Reid and Kim Marsh of High Point; three sisters, Mrs. Hazel Allred of Raleigh, Mrs. Sarah Nicola of Fountain Valley, Calif., and Mrs. Betty Sleeth of Wytheville, Va.; and two grandchildren.
Memorial service will be 11 a.m. Monday in Wesley Memorial United Methodist with Dr. C. Garland Young and Dr. Richard J. Crowder officiating. In accordance with her wishes, Mrs. Marsh will be cremated. Interment in the church columbarium will be private. Visitation will be at Sechrest Funeral Service on E. Lexington Avenue 7-8:30 tonight.

James Matthews

James Halcomb “Shorty” Matthews, 73, resident of 1711 W. Lexington Ave. died Feb. 10, 2001, in The Evergreens, Inc.
He was born in Jamestown on Oct. 31, 1927, a son to Lindsay H. and Annie Dunlap Matthews. He had been a resident of High Point for 43 years and was the owner of Matthews Amusements. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II and was of the Methodist faith. He was a member of the Piedmont Masonic Lodge #681, the Elks Club, the American Legion Post #206 and the High Point Moose Lodge. On July 3, 1959, he was married to the former Christine Harper, who survives of the home.
Also surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Rossie (Romona) Gardner of High Point and Susan (Christy) Matthews of the home; one son, James L. Matthews of Jamestown; a sister, Mrs. Kathleen Cheezem of Johnson City, Tenn.; one brother, Kenneth Matthews of Jamestown; and one grandchild, Lindsay Matthews.
Memorial service will be 2 p.m. Monday in Sechrest Chapel on E. Lexington Avenue by the Rev. Johnny Alberston. Entombment in Guilford Memorial Park Mausoleum will be private. There will be no visitation.

Mrs. Dora Mae Peace Miller, 90, of 4762 Finch Farm Road died Feb. 10, 2001, in Community General Hospital.
She was born Sept. 15, 1910 in Randolph County, a daughter of the late June Peace and Bessie Hinshaw Peace. She was a homemaker and a member of Hopewell United Methodist Church, where she was a member of the Ladies Bible Class and the United Methodist Women. She was married to William Walker Miller, who preceded her in death on May 29, 1980.
Surviving are one daughter, Ms. Beverly Miller Kirby of Bessemer City, N.C.; one son, Keith Miller of Trinity; six grandchildren, Melanie Splawn, Windy Gibson, David Kirby, Lisa Sexton, Leslie Alanna Thornbury and Jessica Miller; four great-grandchildren, Brent Metcalf, Zack Splawn, Lukas Splawn and Jordan Kirby.
Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Monday in Hopewell United Methodist Church with the Revs. Chris Bennett and Robert L. Witty officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. The body will be placed in the church 30 minutes prior to the service. Visitation will be 7-9 tonight at J.C. Green & Sons Funeral Home in Thomasville and other times at the home of her son, Keith Miller, 6855 Welborn Road, Trinity, N.C. 27370.
